Mini Penny
Thread started by kryxtanicole at 04.7.09 - 10:27 pm

So my obsession with penny farthing goes unabated. I want to build a mini penny of some sort. I saw one in Hollywood a few months ago. Who has one of these? I know you're out there! I'm curious what it's like to ride a mini; I've ridden a full-size before. I'm trying to decide what size I want the wheels to be. Who's got the deets on the mini penny?!?!?

I've only seen one on a ride and that was before I got with MR

Seems like a rather, simple design.

I reckon a 700c or 26" in the front, and some puny-ass, 16" or 12" in the rear.
Frame-wise, some long tube in an angled fashion that's welded to an existing steer tube and the rear-triangle of some mini-bike.

Of course then you'll want to make sure the long tube has enough clearance for steer-swing.

26" much too small. I was thinking 36".

Here is one that was ridden at Barchopz at the Hollywood ride. This was a custom that was made from a wheel chair wheel. Damn, I forgot his name but he totally kept up with us throughout the whole ride!

Is there anything bigger than 36" that's really available without custom fabrication? I assume you use unicycle hubs, bearings, and cranks for something like this, after all, a P-far is basically a unicycle with a training wheel!

@ Speedybrian - That must have been the one I saw! A wheelchair wheel you say? That's awesometacular to the max. Where did that gent go???

There are larger wheels available. From these guys: http://www.hiwheel.com/accessories_main.htm#wheels
They're quite a bit pricey.

Was on the web trying to source an even larger wheel for my unicycle, and came across this thread.

Coker used to make a "small" penny farthing with a 36" wheel (same size that I have on my uniycle).

The best current source for penny farthings is http://www.hiwheel.com/boneshakers/index.htm

Interestingly, penny farthings are what gave rise to the unicycle in the first place. The rear wheel would leave the ground while climbing, and eventually some guys figured out that they didn't need the rear wheel at all!
