Paint over chrome.

Anybody have experience stripping paint off of a frame that has been chromed then painted over.

Its not a rattlecan job ... its the original paint. Some bikes were chromed first then painted.

I'm helping a friend and hoping it will be possible to strip the paint without hurting the chrome. then perhaps the chrome could be polished to make the bike look all shiny and sweet.

Suggestions?

 I'd go with the chemical strip option, then peel that skin off.

 If it's a rattlecan job, then it should be easy to strip the paint off with a chemical striper, and not ruin the chrome. You can also get it blasted with walnut shells and it wouldn't harm the chrome, but it will be more expensive.

 Jasco Paint Stripper or maybe (since it's factory paint) Jasco Paint & Epoxy Stripper. Test in an inconspicuous spot first.

Since it's chrome, you might be able to use a heat stripper, but again test inconspicuously for rainbowing of the chrome.

Deffinitely don't sand blast it. If it needs to be scrubbed use a cheap scrub pad from the 99 cent store. Don't use Scotch Brite or anything that has abrasives in it.

Use a buffing wheel with chrome specific polish to remove the last bits of stuck paint/primer.

 hello- bead plasting and/or walnut shells or plastic beads and that shit will dull the chrome finish- ive been plating and painting bikes for awhile- if you want to keep it chrome ive got a can of stripper you can have that will remove all paint and pre clean the chrome beneath-- do you want it chrome because we can either replate it or polish out the exsisting chrome finish or if you want it painted i can shoot it for your cheap-- pick a color you dig or i can 2stage it with a sweet metalflake or candy in you clearcoat- the stripper and polish is free any custom paint is slightly above the cost of materials- i want to see some ridazz rolling sick shit- that will flip some minds
