It is a small lake in the Imperial valley that was once dry but due to a large flood in the early 1900s it was I guess you can say rehydrated. The town around the lake was once a destination spot for vacationers and their families but because the main water supply for the lake is the New River it is no longer a place worth visiting unless you are an Midnightrida or an urban explorer. The New river isn't actually a river its more of a large stream of runoff from Mexicali and surrounding imperial valley farms. So the lake is more like a large unflushed toilet mixed with chemicals and fertilizers

And rumor has it that a Spanish galleon was landlocked near this area in 1700's after the passage back into the Sea of Cortez dried up.
On board this vessel were many riches being brought before the Crown.

Well, we had a great trip planned, but the recent weather has made the sea unbearable. They closed Salton Sea for the weekend; that's why people are going to these small-city critical masses, Slab City and Bombay Beach. Its a shame.

I'll answer this one...
It's a prehistoric dry lake bed, filled with run off. So it's pretty gross.
It's also the largest lake (man made or otherwise) in California.
It's where Christopher McCandless, made famous in the John Krakauer book Into the Wild, spent some time before heading to Alaska.
It's where Slab City and Salvation Mountain is located.
It's where a bunch of neo-hippy, bicycle freaks & cultists are camping this weekend.
It's where you should be, this weekend.

The Salton Sea is dead! It died January 5, 1998 while skiing Heavenly Ski Resort near South Lake Tahoe.

can we have a scary story night by the fire? maybe read THE STAND by stephen king (would be perfect) and those that are drunk or high or whatever could reenact it as the person is reading from the book?
