Stolen Black Pake 51cm
Thread started by bikechase at 12.10.08 - 1:29 pm

Someone stole my girlfriend's (not fancy, but) everyday ride from a bike rack on Melrose/Croft:

Black Pake single speed-- no decals, fat tubes, small size. (51 or 53)
Silver IRO rims/spokes/hubs with gatorskins
Silver IRO brakes
Well-used Perforated Turbo Special Saddle
FSA Cranks/Wellgo Pedals/MKS Sylvan Padded toe clips
MKS Sylvan tan toe straps

Distinguishing features:

laquered natural cork drops (super narrow 38cm)

Laquered twine on the top tubes

we've had aobut 17 stolen bikes now but were any of them locked up with a standard u lock?

i think one of them had a u lock but the guys stole the back wheel.

Isn't Melrose and Croft in West Hollywood. Just east of La Cienega.

I'm at work, so I don't have a picture of the bike.
I'll post a pic if I can find it.

Melrose & Croft-- West Hollywood, thats right.

The bike was only locked with a cable lock, and the thief left a crappy fixed rat in the bike's place.

The bike is only about a year old, so it's pretty clean.

I assume the thief will sell the parts (?).

The laquered narrow drop bars and laquered twine on the top tubes (holding up the rear brake cable) are giveaways.

The black perforated turbo special (gold "turbo" on the back") is the only other distinct feature.

Otherwise, the bike is pretty generic

Cable locks should be outlawed, they provide a false sense of protection. Nearly all of the bikes stolen were cable locked.
Anyone using a cable lock needs to immediately, not this weekend or next tuesday, go out and get a U-Lock.
They are on sale at Performance Bike.

throw away the cable keep the U-lock

Use a U-lock, but keep the cable lock to lock up your wheels/ accessories.

U-locks work pretty well in this town, as almost every stolen bike that gets posted on MR was either unlocked, locked with a cable, or locked to another bike but not to anything immoveable.

Too bad they're so heavy.

If you know the guy who rides this bike, he is probably the theif who stole my girlfriend's Pake single speed.

Let me know if it rings any bells. Thanks.

it sucks that people are getting their bikes stolen, but at the same time, people need to spend more thought and money on locking your bikes properly, especially if your bike is a decent one. this is LA. and its a recession. almost every stolen bike on this board was a nice one, and locked with cable lock.

i know you think pake is not super high end, but it's still a nice bike that i would want to ride. get two u-locks. one a little bit bigger for the back wheel and frame, and the other smaller for the front wheel to frame. a little extra baggage to carry around, and $60 worth of locks is a decent price to pay to protect your $500 bike.

another thing to think about is where you're locking it up. if you ride to watch a movie, someone will know they have approximately 1.5-2 hrs to break the bike loose, no matter what type of lock you use. if you lock up your bike outside your place overnight, then well, you get the picture...

or you can ignore all of the above and just get a really really uglyugly bike. untrue wheels, scratched up everything, braze-ons, heavy as a car, bad spray paint job. then feel free to use a cable lock and park it next to masi or bianchi also using a cable lock.

The penis of the guy that did this is probably as short as those bars.
