There are so many hills around LA that are long enough to have a short races on. I'm thinking about hosting an elimination race up Laurel Canyon Blvd from the Valley Side, and others. Its a 3 mile climb, 5 people put in $10, and you dont have to be the first one up, you just dont want to be the last one up. Requires a bit of a strategy to pace yourself. If you make it through the races 4 times, you take home 50.
4 heats, however many sets of racers going up at a time, its a great training ride.
Geared bikes would be the idea, but we could have a fixie class, but that will be killer.
There's not much to set up, I would actually need someone at the top to record times for the people coming up. Statistics would be great to keep track of.
