Bicyclists to raise cycling awareness

VAN NUYS - As many as 100 cyclists are expected to cruise local streets in a pack Tuesday night to raise awareness about bicycles on the road.
Known as a "critical mass" ride, these bicycling campaigns occur in major cities nationwide and are open to all who show up, said Damien Newton, editor of Streetsblog Los Angeles.
The San Fernando Valley's ride takes off at 7 p.m. Tuesday from Victory Boulevard and Woodley Avenue. It does not have a planned route or leader.
On these types of rides, riders frequently do not stop for red lights in order to stay together, with some stopping traffic for the group, Newton said. Riders are encouraged to wear orange or ride orange bicycles.
Yeah, it was weird. Sue called me last night to ask questions about something off the Streetsblog calendar section. That's never happened before. She's the regular transportation writer for the Daily News and a friend to cyclists, but wasn't well versed in what Critical Mass actually is/was.
I told her to go to the ride tomorrow, we'll see if she takes me up on it.
