Metro to Bike Riders: Drop Dead
Thread started by daymen at 07.24.08 - 5:45 pm

So the Metro Board blew off our sign on letter, even though we ended up with more than 200 signatures.

Basically they want us to be good boys and girls and go back to our individual 88 cities and fight there. You can read a breakdown of the entire meeting at Streetsblog. Of course, there's still the little matter of getting the votes to pass this thing in November...

METRO BOARD PASSES SALES TAX PROPOSAL

although we didn't get what we wanted, we were heard this time at least.

let's keep the pressure on for the percentage of local returns.

Wow, what blatant disregard for two very real forms of transportation.

On the upside, I hear that the dept. of DIY is about to see its numbers swell. Soon we will be blessed by Capt. Sharrow all over Los Angeles!

Villaraigosa mentioned "bikers and pedestrians" today in his LAT opinion piece for supporting the measure.

I don't even know if I like the measure. Sales taxes are regressive. They hurt the poor and the middle class more than the rich.

The department of DIY probably doesn't take requests. But on the other hand DIY is an all-inclusive department.

DIY it is. I can lead and head a DIY public works covert crew. AT LAST WE WILL REVEAL OURSELVES TO THE BEAUREWCRATS, AT LAST WE SHALL HAVE OUR REVENGE. We shall have our cause seen by all and "shared" by all.

Steve Hymon -- Bottleneck Blog

The sales tax initiative: Ramping up, July 25

Some other impressions from yesterday's vote by the Metro board to move forward with a half-cent sales tax initiative:

Cyclists speak out

I liked the spunk of the several cyclists who, with a rare mix of clarity and humor, made their case to the Metro board that money in the sales tax plan should be set aside for bike improvements and pedestrians. "Bicycling is a solution; the more you integrate it into your mass transit plans ... the better service you will have," cyclist Ingrid Peterson told the board. She's got a point -- bikes are often the quickest way to bus and rail stops.

Fifteen percent of sales tax revenue ($4.5 billion to $6 billion if Metro's estimates are correct) would go back to cities and unincorporated areas and it would be up to them to spend the money as they see fit. The cyclists are worried that some cities may spend on cyclists and pedestrians while others may not. It's a legit worry. Damien Newton at Streetsblog Los Angeles is helping lead the campaign; lots more details at his blog.

with all do respect to everybody on this board who would support this tax with or without the 1% for bikes and 1%for pedestrians. Another 1/2% sales tax is going to have a cold day in hell chance of passing, now they left off some people that would have gotten out and campaigned for it passing. Smooth move MTA.
