Rainbow Gatherings Under-Fire
Thread started by thayr at 07.17.08 - 5:21 pm

Literally under-fire. Cops shot attendees with paintball guns, pepper spray and mace. It all took place in Wyoming over the July 4th holiday weekend. The incident happened in Kiddie Village (if you don't know, it's where people stay with their children). Law enforcement has for years been trying to crack down on the gatherings but this incident is the first of its kind.

We have another example of a crack-down on alternative groups of people (like cyclists, for instance?). I have been to the gatherings and know what they're about, you have the rainbows and the drainbows. Just as you have a rider who's a dick and throws beer bottles into the street, but is that a reason to criminalize the entire ride? In the same respect you've got a handful of losers who go to the gatherings and f*ck it up for everyone else.

Anyway, word is that this all started when someone packed a bowl for an informant and they arrested him along with someone else for "interfering". Story has it that as they paraded the two "criminals" through a field they were surrounded and attacked by 400 people, who threw sticks and stones (which according to a popular rhyme can break bones). Sounds like some police instigators had a hand in riling folks up, because that doesn't sound like rainbow's behaviour.

The rainbows are like the midnight ridazz of the woods, so it's a shame to see this happening. First Amendment right to freedom of assembly is being trampled over, and those who exercise that right get shot with pepper-balls.

I thought the rainbows were like the Venice bums of the woods.

First they came for the acidheads, and I did not speak up, because I was not an acidhead...

I've always wanted to go to these gatherings. I hope next year they have it on some Indian reservation. It's getting to be that the res is the only safe place to be!!

Interviews from a local town where a gathering was held highlights the true nature of the Rainbows.

I've personally only heard bad things about the rainbows, cultist behavior etc. I don't know what else to say. I've never heard anything good about the rainbows.

Well, when push comes to shove, the yaysayers will just have to utilize informants as well.
Seems like we're still going to be living in the age of double-agents, spies, and turncoats.

Hearing "bad" things is what most people hear about the Rainbows, because it's so easy to spread a negative rumour. Just as most drivers think cyclists are a bunch of lawless hooligins, it's not until you've experienced it can you judge it.

Someone equated the Rainbows to being the "Canary in the Coal-mine", if gatherings become banned that would be a sad statement on America... what would they target next, Midnight Ridazz?

Rainbow Gatherings are like a chilled out version of Burning Man. A difference is that Rainbows freely assemble whereas burning man pays the Bureau of Land Management $750,000 for a permit.

I think on a smaller scale a lot of rides are like a gathering, everyone is there to ride, it's not a cult or some religious group... they just want to ride.

A gathering is an escape from all the everyday bullshit. Just like a ride you've got some folks who drink too much, are irresponsible. Also there's the element of lawlessness, blocking traffic, running red lights, etc... so, because of those things should we be shut down or made to get a permit?

Free speech and the the right to assemble are past history.

Autonomous Fest shut down.

The Lo Desert Proto Sites shut down.

What's next?

I'm thinking about starting a movement to repeal the 1st amendment. At least then we'd know why these events and gatherings were being stopped.
