Essentials for a good at home workshop
Thread started by TeamKRod at 11.1.13 - 12:19 pm

Hey guys, I'm trying to get back into some DIY tinkering on my bike, my new place has some space that I think would work perfectly as a workshop. So, aside from a stand, what would you guys advise as far as necessary tools for everyday repairs? I've looked at a couple toolkits on Amazon, one with 125 tools, and another one with 200 some. What should I be looking for? Oh, and guess I should add that I'm trying to get back into doing complete builds as well, so if that affects any advice you have to give, let me know.

Nowhere near 200 tools, I'm pretty sure. I know I ain't got no 200 tools, and I have almost all the tools I need. Bottom bracket tools, headset wrench, pedal wrench, full set of box wrenches and hex wrenches, chain breaker, chain checker, lockring wrench, torque wrench, spoke wrenches, floor pump, plus a few things I probably forgot. Anything beyond that and you can just go to your friendly local bike co-op and borrow their tools.

You can DIY a headset press for about $5.

Sounds good, I thought the 200 tool set seemed a little dubious, too. I'd totally hit up a local bike co-op for help...but I'm in Mississippi, closest bike friendly place is Atlanta, 4 hours away. Got a great scene there, though, but it's nothing like being back home in LA. I'm trying to spread the gospel of MR down here, though. Kinda why I'm getting the tools, I want to maybe start my own co-op, for whatever interested cyclists there are down here...

Start with a good stand. Than go on to purchase what you need as you need it. People fall into traps of buying tool sets that the possession of become encumbering in themselves (another set of stuff that you don't need), when they only need a hand full of tools.
