harlequin bar wrap
Thread started by ruinedbyidiots at 03.29.09 - 10:46 pm

because i am a grumpy old man, i have recently become a member of the elite in learning how to wrap bars harlequin style. if you would like to have your bars in this pattern, give me your handlebars and four rolls of cloth tape (two of each color) and i will wrap them for you for a beer or a bowl or something else. i havent quite figured out how to deal with brake hoods, so if you have gears, then youre shit out of luck.

what the hell?! i thought i originated that shit!?
i went to michael levine's and got that trimming, dipped it in modgepodge, and wrapped my bars with it almost a year ago.......

oh wow, same result, different methods i guess. there exists a kind of cloth trimming tape, printed with the right pattern that has black and white striping, at the right angle to produce the same result when wrapped.

these bars are $120. why? njs stamped.

cloth tape should be relatively easy to find, but not all bike shops carry it, which is a shame because it is 100x better than any cork or gel tape could ever aspire to be.

i left two inches of space on either side of the clamping point so you could still see the nitto b123 sticker and the njs stamp and get your hipster on.

is the cloth tape comfortable?

i like having the cork tape bc i can ride without gloves.

KiMS1
03.30.09 - 12:12 pm

reply

i wear gloves at night because my fingers get cold. otherwise i am gloveless too. its comfortable for me. some people dont like it so they take an old tube and put that under the cloth tape.

ruinedbyidiots
03.30.09 - 12:14 pm

reply

i have some weird tape with a cool print on it i bought from atomic a month ago.

it sucks though bc it's so thin and it basically feels like theres nothing there. my hands get numb and twitchy if i ride for ahwile without gloves.

i guess what i am asking is if the cloth tape is really thin.

and is it anymore useful than corktape.

KiMS1
03.30.09 - 1:17 pm

Cloth tape is pretty inexpensive. Even if you buy 4 rolls still cheaper than a lot of tapes and grips.

I take exception to the idea that O20 is a boutique. or that its overpriced there.

They just avoid carrying cheap shit that is going to break in 200 miles.

trickmilla
03.30.09 - 1:21 pm

reply

i think 4 rolls still come out to be around 11-12 bucks.

atomic sells regular cork tape for 11 bucks.

idk about orange 20. maybe theyve changed since the last time i was there.

i just remember they had random bits and pieces of bike parts strewn all over their closet sized shop. the only things that they had affordable were coffee stained yanco pads in some discount bucket.

i remember them being incredibly rude and gave me a 27" tire for a 700c wheel. when i came back demanding an exchange they gave me a hard time.

there are bike snobs and then there are dicks and these guys were dicks.

but then again, the last time i was there was a year ago. maybe, hopefully they changed staff.

KiMS1
03.30.09 - 1:31 pm

reply

I've always had a good experience when I'm there. I've gone to their shop when they had already closed and they still opened their doors for me to buy a new tire.

Over priced they may be but whatever, I'd probably run the same prices if I owned a bike store too.

Think of how many dumb asses they have to deal with every single day, I think it'd be hard not to be bitter all the time.

Graham
03.30.09 - 1:36 pm

reply

@trickmilla and graham

well as far as pricing, perhaps ur right about them carrying good quality product.

but

jaded by the other or not, they run a business. they should treat the hand that feeds them a little better.

and when i went in, its not like i was just snooping around the store asking about how to do fucking barspins or anything.

i went in, i asked for my 700c tire, they gave me a 27", i looked at them in a puzzled way, they acted like hardasses, i returned with the tire, told them it was a 27 and not 700, they said oh well, tossed me my right tire, and i left.

no apologies, no nothing.

idk man.

who knows, maybe i need to give them a try again or something.

@Matt

A lot has changed at o20 man! I had a similar "first experience" but they were busy, and their shop was waaaaay to small.
They have a huge shop now (on the corner) and everyone there is genuinely nice and willing to help with ANYTHING. Seriously, give em another shot... but if bargains are what you're after, don't go.
It's like going to Toys R Us with your mom when you were little "just to look." You knew you weren't getting anything, and you'd get pissed when you actually didn't.

BICYKILLER

El Maestro bike shop on 8th and Main has gotten a lot of nice fixed gear parts in stock lateley. They also have cloth tape.

The prices are lower than o20 and they will actually talk to you... even if your bike doesn't cause immediate hipster boners for them.

Orange 20 is not a boutique if you're implying that "boutique" means just fashion and no function. They have tons of practical stuff for commuters and stock lots of town and cargo bikes. They have some bling, for sure, but if you ride a bike every day and depend on them to get around, I'm not going to begrudge you for getting, say, Phil Wood hubs. Ride what you love and love what you ride.

They are busy, too, but I've nothing but excellent service from them, that goes double since they've staffed up and gotten a bigger location.
