East End Ridazz: The Old Tyme Ride

Ok, so I'm posting the ride.
The first East End Ridazz Ride will be "The Old Tyme Ride"
So bring out those old time clothes!
the route planned looks like: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=615220
The direction is up for decision though.
There should be a stop for tacos, I'll have to scout the ride again and look for some decent bars.

Oh yeah, I set up a Livejournal for the EE Ridazz as well :

the thinking is that for group rides, right hand turns are a lot safer than left turns, so the direction you have your route going looks safer than the reverse.
this route looks sweet!
Roadblock01.3.07 - 8:47 pm
reply
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. my only thought as to the pros for the other direction being the climb is shorter in length, but I kind like the direction I have there, I ride about half of it every day, it's not bad, also puts the taco stand nearer to the end of the ride ;-)

great theme great route great graphics! and really thoughtful transportation directions man. this looks like it's gonna be a blast.

Yeah, I hope so, hope we get a decent turnout, it'd be nice to see a big ride out on this end of the county that doesnt involve a peloton.
Some things i don't know if I mentioned (as in my experience riding out here's a little different).
Lights both front and rear are recommended for this ride, some of the roads (yes even the major roads) in Pomona arent that well lit, and two, an extra layer is a good idea, it can get kinda chilly up here at night (especially if we're hangin out afterward).
Also, there tends to be some level of debris on the roads out here (i.e. glass and thorns and such) having a spare, or at least patches might not be the worst idea (but isnt this true everywhere?), I know I'll have patches and probably a spare 700x26c.

Hmm, looks like there's going to be a one block detour due to construction on the route, but it doesnt affect milage any, and might be better as the other street has a train bridge so we won't get stuck waiting for one of the gazillion cargo trains that run through Pomona.
Question, you guys think stopping for tacos at about the 7.5 mile mark is too early? Otherwise I gotta try and find some sort of other place good for a stop.
FuzzBeast01.8.07 - 1:33 am

i don't understand "too early for tacos"
lets chase a taco truck
bicigol01.9.07 - 2:05 pm

Screw that, any time is a good time for tacos!! The question is, how the hell is I getting home?? Hey fuzz, how late do the trains run?
420LaHaRR01.10.07 - 7:58 pm
reply
trains stop probably while we're on the ride, however, the bus runs all the way back to union station for 3 bucks, leaves across the street from where we'll be starting. Runs 24 hrs.

Also, don't expect too much in the way of spoke cards (sorry) I'm pretty much flat broke. I might be able to hand laminate some with some packing tape or something, but otherwise there will at least be paper copies of the route.
FuzzBeast01.11.07 - 7:36 pm

Oh and the new, updated route (due to thet construction thingy)

I will be there. I have been telling people about this ride. It would be fun to go to The Press after the ride for a drink...it's about a hundred yards up the street from the meetup point
tern01.14.07 - 6:03 pm

I can laminate the spoke cards. I have access to a laminating machine at work. I live not to far away from P-town. I can also print them for you, if you want. What color paper? Color copies or b/w? I can take care of it, if you want. Send me front and back images, or I will pick it up in Pomona during the week.

ok, i'll get those images to you, hopefully by the end of the day today (sorry, was away from my comp for the weekend) and yeah, I was deffinately thinking of the press after the ride, mmm potato taquitos and miso soup, that is, if I'm not broker than shit by then)

This ride sounds sweeet.
By the way, I'm new to the board. Hello everyone.

Thanks Fuzz. I got the info and the image. You'll have plenty of spole cards for the ride. I'll show up a bit early to give them to you.
By the way, could we make a stop on 2nd and Gary?
tern01.16.07 - 6:28 pm
reply
Oh yeah....I forgot to mention, I would like to get one of the taped cards, if you've made any...yeow! If this is the case, could I reserve one?
tern01.16.07 - 6:41 pm
reply
Hey, videotape. We should ride out to the meetup point together.
What area of Covina do you live in? I may live fairly close to you.
tern01.16.07 - 7:27 pm
reply
yeah, sure, throw on a stop @ 2nd street, there's usually something goin on there., didnt even think of it, good distance for a stop too.
Yeah, I've got a few taped cards, I'll give ya one.
FuzzBeast01.16.07 - 8:32 pm
reply
oh yeah, and i think i've got a route in mind for the next ride, i'll divulge further later on, I still need to test ride it, but if anyone wants to come along on the test ride (whenever that happens) i'd GLADLY welcome some company.

That sounds great, but unfortunately I won't be able to attend on Saturday. I got pulled into going to a family party. I am definitely looking forward to next month's ride...but for future reference, I live over by Downtown.

Fuzz,
By pre-ride, I mean is when will you scout the route?
sc_nomad01.18.07 - 3:39 pm
reply
oh, that ride...
yeah, I will. probably be in a week or so.
FuzzBeast01.18.07 - 6:15 pm
reply
I'll go on the scouting ride, too.
I'm doing a another scouting ride on Saturday morning...for a night-time century on the first of June. A couple of people are meeting up with me along the way, hopefully.
If anyone would like to go, hit up THE DARK CENTURY thread. LB or East Enders would probably be closest to meet up.
Any details about the second ride East End ride?
I laminated a bunch of spoke cards for the East End ride scheduled for this Saturday. But, the card stock I used wasn't thick enough. I tested a couple out on my spokes, and they didn't do too well. I will keep them just in case, but I'm doing another batch tomorrow. I think I will do a few on light colored paper as well....and a very few with glitter. Most of the cards I make tomorrow will be on white, thick card stock.
Thanks for organizing the ride, FuzzBeast.
tern01.18.07 - 7:14 pm
reply
if I'm not msitaken it's not the cardstock you have to thicken it's the thickness of the laminating pouches.
Roadblock01.18.07 - 7:28 pm

Hey videotape...I asked if you would like to ride out to the East End ride on Saturday because the text in your profile says, "Straight outta Covina." Well, I thought that you would like to have some company riding into Claremont. But since you live near down town, I guess it wouldn't be very practical to ride out together. Have fun at the family gathering. I certainly had fun at family get togethers over Christmas on the east coast. I'll see you on some other ride, hopefully.
tern01.18.07 - 7:33 pm
reply
RoadBlock...thanks. I have a big ass industrial laminater at work. Its about three feet wide. It has speeds and temperature settings. But, I guess the thickness of the roll of laminate isn't thick enough. I will go to Kinko's or somewhere to do it the other way...with the pouches. Any advice on where to do this cheap. I can spend some money on this, if I need to. Not that I'm rich, but I want to do the spoke cards for this one, since I've already started.
I would like to purchace a laminater....for spoke card parties, and to loan to others. I am a relative noob to the spoke card manufacturing process.
tern01.18.07 - 7:45 pm
reply
You know what man,Spending money at kinkos is a lot to ask of people. it's only my opinion but I think people should be spending as little money on these rides as possible. if that means thinner spoke cards or no spoke cards so be it. At the end of the day its more important that these rides continue to be fun with little burden on anyone. if people want to go crazy and high quality that's awesome but serious dont kill yourself.
thanks for your contribution and care it means alot to LA and the Ridazz.
Shit, maybe to keep it cheap, and if you have a free lamination hook up at work maybe you could just double laminate them?
Ride on. Looking forward to this ride!

Yo speaking of which, anyone planning on bringing a camera? I don't really have anything i could ride with, and am currently so literally flat broke that I can't even afford the 6-10 bucks to go get a disposable, but seriously, it'd be good to get at least a couple decent pics of the first ride out here.
FuzzBeast01.19.07 - 12:14 am
reply
Oh and as for the next ride, I'll try and bring a copy of the map I'm thinking of and we can set up a d/t for the test ride at the ride on saturday.

Haha, oops sorry Tern, I meant I live near Downtown Covina, off Badillo. :P

Spoke cards are done. NIce and stiff. I got a really good deal from a print shop near my work...10 bucks for 70. (I gave a couple away to friends who will be there.
Roadblock...good idea....I will try double laminating on my machine at work.
Hey videotape...I thought that I might have been mistaken about which downtown you were talking about when I got up this morning.
Yeah FuzzBeast, lets take a gander at the map. I'm ready to go when you are.
See you tomorrow everyone.

Hollywood ridazz, I liked the Old Tyme getups....and I would like to meet your ridazz dog that likes to sit in your basket.
Thanks FuzzBeast for a great ride. We'll make this one monthly. Email me when you are ready to scout the next ride.

hey fuzz n' tern,
great inaugural ride this past weekend.
ironic that most of the riders were not from the east end.
how do we get more locals on this ride?
one recommendation: food at the END of the ride, please!
spiraldemon01.22.07 - 2:01 pm
reply
I have spread the word for more locals. Some of the guys I knew had to take care of prior plans but I am trying to get more local gear heads to show up and support the East End scene and ride. Im in for sure on the next one! Hope to see y'all soon.

yeah i've been spreading the word to some locals too, had a few people who said they were gonna ride then didnt show, also I've heard rumors of a student run repair shop on one of the five colleges, gonna see if I can find it, should be able to pick up a couple heads there.
Oh and tern, four sounds fine, I'll see you there, and if there's any other locals who wanna do the test ride for the next route, swing on by.
FuzzBeast01.22.07 - 5:23 pm
reply
FuzzBeast--the bike coop is at Pitzer. I can spread the word there, if you'd like. By the way, thanks for having the idea, taking the initiative and doing the work to get this ride going. I was happy to help.
tern01.22.07 - 7:06 pm
reply
sc_nomad--what's up? Would you like to scout the next ride with us? I have the luxury of getting out of work before three, and I want to ride the train out to the ninja ride. So, I set the time for four so that we could get done in time to take the train to the ninja ride. If we can tailor the meetup time to fit your schedule...I can bet that fuzz would be up for it. If I have to, I can drive out to LA, but I'd rather not. I generally ride out, or take the train to LA. Come on out and bring the pumpkin head and your steel steed from sleepy hollow.
tern01.22.07 - 7:47 pm
reply
Hmm, where at Pitzer is the co-op? just wondering?
Oh, and I'm down to taylor the test ride time, however, I too would like to catch the train down to hollywood ridazz...

Okay--four it is.
tern01.23.07 - 4:03 pm

FuzzBeast--the Pitzer Bike Shop is in the basement of Holden Hall (next to McConnell), unless it has moved recently. I think it's the same location as their green bike program.
