The Nerds Ride to our Spiritual Leader, Stephen Hawking @ Caltech

MEETING: This ride will meet at the Bike Oven on 3706 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90065
TIME & DATE: April 9th at 5:15pm
ROLL TIME: 5:30pm
LENGTH: 7.3 miles
ROUTE: Click here
http://events.caltech.edu/events/event-5301.html

Dr. Hawking will explain that black holes aren't as black as they are painted. Things can get out of a black hole to the outside and, possibly, on to another universe.

This talk by Professor Hawking is intended for a general audience.

Stephen Hawking holds the Lucasian Professorship at Cambridge University (the professorship once held by Sir Isaac Newton) and is the Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Scholar at Caltech. For the past 45 years he has been a world leader in research on black holes, the birth of the universe, and the nature of space, time, and gravity.

Biography

Stephen William Hawking, CH, CBE, FRS, FRSA, was born January 8, 1942, on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death. He has come to be thought of as the greatest mind in physics since Albert Einstein. With similar interests -- discovering the deepest workings of the universe -- he has been able to communicate arcane matters not just to other physicists but to the general public.

Stephen Hawking is a British theoretical physicist. Hawking is the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He is known for his contributions to the fields of cosmology and quantum gravity, especially in the context of black holes, and his popular works in which he discusses his own theories and cosmology in general. These include the runaway popular science bestseller A Brief History of Time, which stayed on the British Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks.

I went to se Mr. Hawking at Cal Tech about 7 or 8 years ago, It was really great, but I have to say you can't arrive early enough. I must have gotten there 3 or 4 hours earlyto hold spots for my friends and there were lots of people in front of us. The many people who didn't get in got to see a live simulcast in another bldg. near by.

I might have been at the same one trickmilla. I got there a couple of hours early and felt lucky to get in. Dr. Hawking was at Caltech about a year ago, so I'm hoping the crowd will be a little less. But the guy is like a rock star.

If everyone wants to leave earlier, we change it to an earlier time. Just being there will be pretty cool. Still I would rather be inside.

If you want to blend in with the nerds at Cal Tech i suggest rockin' some Reeboks. Last time I was there they outnumbered every other shoe 2-1.
It got me thinkin' ... If all the scientists and engineers wear Reeboks does that mean they are better shoes? Or are they just mindless fashion sluts like the rest of us?

I've got a good Stephen Hawking + Bicycle story:

When I was in college, Hawking was due to give a lecture at Campbell Hall at UCSB. I was running late and coming on the bike path from downtown, which circles around the backside of hall. I was hauling ass and as I came around a corner, who should be in the middle of the bike path but Prof. Hawking himself and his assistant. I had to choose between a tree and the smartest dude on the planet. I chose the tree. It hurt. But I made it to the lecture before it started. He did say something to me, but I'll be damned if I was able to comprehend. My brain was still buzzing from the near miss and pain of having the wind knocked out of me.

No we don't need reservations, but getting there sooner would be better. If we can get there real early, we may have a chance of sitting together. I'll call up and see how they are going to handle people holding places in line.

That link above is trippy. I hate when they don't number the videos though. How do you know which is the next part?

User1
04.2.08 - 10:26 pm

Seeing as how I am not going to work that day, what time are all the early birds going to stand in line?

NEWB310
04.2.08 - 11:36 pm

reply

I just got done talking to the girl at the box office. She suggested to get there by 5pm if you want to be sure to get a seat. Last year they had over 2,000 peeps show up for an auditorium that seats 1100. They don't have a policy for holding someone's place in line. So we can have someone hold our place. However we need to be discreet about snaking in line. That, or we can leave earlier. I'm up for leaving earlier if we can. I was shooting to be there by 6:30 btw.

User1
04.3.08 - 11:23 am

I was thinking about rolling out at about 12 p.m or so. I gotta get some eats first! You are hardcore if you show up at 8 a.m.

Black matter spoke cards needed!!! In reality, this seems like a very rare opportunity to actually hear Mr. Hawkings speak, as he is not getting any younger..

dl1245

Geezz I didn't even think this would warrant spoke cards. You have a design in mind dl?

How many that are planning on going can and want to leave earlier? I wouldn't mine leaving earlier myself. The peeps getting there earlier will be saving a spot for the others. The more there earlier, the better.

User1
04.7.08 - 9:38 pm

reply

I might be able to leave earlier...I'm already ditchin class to make it..I could probably leave Ventura County at about 2pm and make it to that meetup spot around..maybe 3:30pm or 4?? I just wanna make sure I get a seat!

seems like the 5.5 roll time is cutting it a bit close. i'm going to try to roll earlier and save our places in line. who else is up for a 4.0 roll out?

I posted this ride up on the Bike Oven site.

Also, maybe youguys could take the Gold Line to Lake Street, and then ride down Lake to CalTech if you're strapped for time or simply lazy.

I'm down for leaving earlier as long as we don't hang someone up.

i'll do my best to ride @ 4.... should i arrive late, i'll just sit & enjoy a luck lager... role @ 5.5

freeballing

Freeballing and others,

If you can get there early, go for it. I'm gona have to stick with my rolling time. As long as we got more nerds in line early than we have rolling at 5:30, we should be ok. We'll look for you guys when we get there.

May the force be with you.

User1
04.8.08 - 10:36 pm

Hmm, any info on what time the doors actually open or if some people will literally be waiting in line until 8pm? I recall that someone called and spoke to a lady??

dl1245
04.8.08 - 11:05 pm

reply

Yeah that was me that talked to the box office.

The one time I saw him, I think I remember doors opening about an hour before the lecture. Also the lecture started late. I don't expect the ride taking that long. So the 5:30 ride should be there a little after 6pm
