That's way too much. I payed 140 for both of mine. I know the price has gone up, but not that much.

Incycle is asking too much. I've seen them in shops recently for 170

I would've also suggested picking up a second hand, NiteRider Classic system.
Those would do me good for when I need to light up a dark, desert path and not fall into a Jack-Alope hole!!!

there is a minewt with 2 lights....that may be what you are looking at.

Still the one light is enough, plus you get way more battery life than with the 2 light minewt models....because both have the same battery.

Eddie,

Good seeing you today at the art show.

Definitely check out the minewt X2. Not the slightly older Minewt which is still on the market. The X2 is almost twice as bright as the older one and the battery lasts a lot longer.

I think the battery is around 3.5 hours on high and close to 7 or 8 on low (which is really just a tiny bit dimmer than high).

I also use a regular redundant cheap front light as my blinky or in an emergency, to be used as a back up if my x2 battery dies.

And i paid around $150 for mine through ebay. Remember just make sure its the X2!

Eddie,

REI and Performance sells the Niterider lights. Both have had them on sale. Don't know about now.

The minewt X2 mentioned by RB is some serious lighting. Despite it's light weight and small size compared to many chargeable systems, it is bright enough to light entire unlit tunnel ways on the bike trials at night, and gets constant complaints from other riders who accidentally look into it.

Battery on brightest mode last for a solid few hours, and couple hours longer on low beam setting. Low beam is still bright as shit.

On flasher mode, it turns everything on the street that is reflective into a disco dance party, and there is no way a car cannot see you.

The NiteRider TriNewt is even more crazy bright (3 LEDs) and the battery lasts forever. In blinky mode (which I never use cause it makes me feel like I'm about to have a seizure. Blinking and brightness don't mix all that well), it is said to last 7.5 hours. On low beam, it gets somewhere north of 4 hours. On high beam, it is over 3 hours.

I get tons of complaints about my light when I use it. In fact, I've taken to riding with a cheapy cat-eye light that I use during group rides, and only use the Nite Rider when riding to and from the ride or when the pavement quality sucks. Because there are so many lights around on the group rides, even a 4.5 hour battery life is just fine, since you definitely don't need to have it on all the time. It is WAY too bright for that.

I have the Dinotte 200L which you can pick up at most REIs for around $160. On max brightness it runs for 2 hours but it will BLIND oncoming traffic so I usually run it on med or low which runs 6 hours. Also has 3 flash patterns which will get your attention. Very small and compact.

I have an older Night Rider Classic. On a full charge, it will last a little over two hours and when the battery runs down, it only takes a few seconds for it to go from light to dark. On an MR ride, I end uip turning it on when we're riding on a dark street so I can look for pot holes and then turning it off when there are street lights.

If I had to do it over again, I might go for a mini-newt except I don't like the rubber band arrangement to hold it on the handlebars.

I have several NiteRiders from the Classic (halogen), several HIDs and the newer LEDs. I find that for riding on the street, the LEDs work best. They are bright enough to be seen and illuminate the road quite a bit. They last about 2-3 hours on the lower setting and a little over an hour on the high.

The HIDs and the Trinewt are brighter but so much more expensive $300 - $500. They have a longer burn times but the batteries are bigger. They are fine you are riding alone most of the time, they won't work in a group setting. If someone behind you is using an HID light, the brightness of the light and the shadow it creates are almost at the range of what your eyes can see. Simply, you cannot see anything in your shadow. Also, trying to look back to check traffic is almost impossible because of the contrast. Best thing is you can ride on the outside of the group and call " Car back!" and people get out of he way.

Interesting link on the LEDs. Does anyone happen to know what the wattage rating is on these lights on the Night Riders mentioned above?

Don't want to squash the raving about the Night Riders, but Eddie, have you looked at what's in the instructables site on doing a DIY light? They have quite a few different designs.

Is the DIY ethos just for painting your bike?

You can't go wrong w/ the Minewt... I own the Dinotte 200L and I love it.... You can even hack it to run longer but Dinotte doesn't sell local... that I know of. I've compared the Minewt and Dinotte and you can't go wrong with either. The Dual Minewt kicks freakin ass.... Good luck!!

I gotta give props to Nite Rider.
The battery on our Minewt (the little lady hijacked it some time ago) died. I called NR to inquire about getting it repaired and they said that since the unit has been out under 2 years its still under warranty even though I don't have a receipt!

Thats customer service!

If you battery goes bunk on your Minewt, send that shit in SOON!

I use the DiNotte 140 - the predecessor to the 200L that cochiloco has. Crazy bright, great battery light, and it runs on AAs, so its just about impossible to get stranded with a dead battery - you can refill at any 7-11. Also, it has a limp-home mode if your battery gets low, it just sets itself to low and you've got an hour or so of light to get home or a new battery.

The 200 is this years' model - about $170 at REI (minus 20% during their friends & family sale this weekend).

I use a NiteRider MiNewt X2. Really friggin' bright and lasts 7 hours low and 3 hours high. Low is still very bright, enough to see and be seen on a completely unlit road.

I got it at REI. I used my dividend plus a 20 percent sale. Ask your local shop if they can order it, it's usually around $189 from a store. You might be able to get it for around $160 online.

I've also heard great things about the Busch & Miller Ixon IQ. It's about $150 with charger, plus it can be used with dynamo hubs for $40 extra.

bump, etc.

So my family wants to know what I want for Xmas, and I think it's time I get a good bike light (since I've had way too many close calls with cars recently) and a rechargeable battery system.

Sounds like everyone agrees that the NiteRider MiNewt X2 is the best option out there, si? Is this still preferred over the TriNewt?
