 The ride ends when you transcend your body and enter the eternal darkness that follows.

Unless, of course, you believe that you will float up into the sky to hang out with a hippie looking guy, or that you will be sent back to earth in the form of an animal or another worldly likeness.

 It ends when you venture through the "Chapa'Ai'", and have your life-forced drained by either a Wraith or a Prior.
In either case, Walter dialed in the wrong gate address and closed the Iris as you rode through.
