I'll have plenty of them made, but I can't make a ton at one time because of money. So I'll have to sell like 30 at a time, then recoop the money to buy more and more and more!!

The shirts will not go for more than $10. I'm getting a super cheap deal and the profits are minimal. Hopefully I'll have some extra cash to buy beer for you guys at the end of this ride!! You know what... I'll say it now. THE SMALL PROFIT FROM THE SHIRTS WILL GO TOWARDS BEER!!!!

I'm riding through the proposed route TOMORROW NIGHT!! Who is coming with me? So far two other people have already volunteered. We're taking off from Griffith Park at Los Feliz and Fern Dell @ 9:30pm on Thursday the 28th... tomorrow.

See you there, if you dare!!

As of now, the route is fucking wicked. A lot of turns, maybe too many. But what am I gonna do if we are to hit a bunch of cemetaries? I'll need help on this practice ride to find ways to possibly ride through the cemetaries for extra SPOOKINESS!!

We just scouted out the route. I must say, it's a good one, very scenic, very spooky, and all on smooth roads. If you get hungry for mexican seafood we're gong to pass three El 7 Mares on the way. This ride will NOT disappoint!

The ride was about 25 miles. The good news is that the ride takes you in a big circle, so we start at Griffith Park and we'll end at Echo Park.

T-SHIRTS!!!!

They'll be done this coming week. email rchavez80@yahoo.com and write your name and shirt size. M, L, XL and quantity of each.

As of right now I only have M, L, and XL but the 2nd batch will have some XXL and S.

1st email, first serve.

Update on shirts. There were a couple problems that needed to be worked out with the shirts, so I should have them in my hands next Thursday or Friday.

ONCE AGAIN the shirt deadline is pushed back. It's a good thing the guy doing the shirts for me is such a nice guy cuz normally I'd be upset by now.

I've sent an email to all of you that have requested a shirt or shirts. If you haven't requested a shirt with that lovely Graphic from the ride, along with the Midnight Ridazz SKULL on the back below the neck... then EMAIL ME at rchavez80@yahoo.com and tell me your name and the size you want.

The shirts are only 10 bones. Get it? Bones...

SHIRTS ARE IN!! Check your email to see if you made the list. It was on a first email, first serve basis. I'll be getting more tomorrow, so don't worry if you didn't get an email. Also, I've got 4 more XLs left!

All XXLs and Smalls will be purchased closer to the date of the ride so I can avoid overbuying, so email me your name and shirt size if you haven't done so already. I'm meeting up with people today and tomorrow evening to give out shirts. 10 Bones gets you one and a lil treat at the ride.

I just did a google search on La Noche de los Biciclistas Muertos and found some interesting stuff. Besides the typical stuff like the Midnight Ridazz site and bike boom, I found a few interesting things.

1) a young, single woman that posted on craigslist hoping to find a man that will want to go with her to social events in the area (the "La Noche" ride being one of those events) in the hopes that it will spark a romantic relationship.
2) the message board for the "Pasadena Singles Meetup Group," and the ride seems to be a point of interest for singles to socialize.
3) a few different myspace pages
4) a posting of the "La Noche" ride in a Mountain Bike Social Club. Pasadena likes this ride...

I hope that chick goes on the ride and meets the love of her life.

raymond you're awesome.

I have heard a lot about the ridezzz and am probably going to come and check it out this week. For anyone that has done one of the ridez in the past, is it generally an out and back ride. Or just ride way out, and your on your own going back?

big boy phil
11.8.06 - 5:10 pm

reply

you can do it!

Joe Borfo
11.8.06 - 5:22 pm

reply

I WILL NOT be posting the route afterall. It's fairly simple though.

Parking up by the start point (Los Feliz Blvd. and Fern Dell Drive) is pretty much a no-go. I suggest parking in the Los Feliz area and riding to the start, or park in Hollywood and come up. I've heard some people will be parking at Echo Park, then will be joining us as we ride down Sunset. Whatever works for you.

Once again, we start at the West entrance of Griffith Park make our way past Echo Park, then through Boyle Heights, keep going East, then south, the through downtown, then end at Echo Park.

The surprise will be Pinatas!! Yeah, candy and peanuts in the Pinatas... Mexican style. People who bought shirts will have a different spoke card, and the first 40 people or so will get a limited edition spoke card. All the rest will get a lump of coal and a generic spoke card.

21 motha-f'in miles. Last time I rode it I was getting sick and had a tough time. I rode it again last night and its much easier than I thought.

Now my fingers are tired from all this typing... somebody beer me.

Since parking is a pain, how about the valley people meeting up at the Univ station, take the train to Hollywood and Highland, then bike over to the start?
To go home afterwards, bike around Griffith Park on the river path back to Univ. Station?

Meet up at Univ. station around 8ishpm?

The Metro makes sense for people who have to travel far, but we're only talking about ECHO PARK. It's practically right up the street from Los Feliz. You'd ride farther to get to the Redline, and then get from the Redline to the ride, than if you rode straight to the ride.

another question for Dave,
regarding the ride back, what is the proposed route you wanted to take? are you talking about going around grifith park (along the 5) back towards the 134 fwy, then back to universal? Sorry, I don't know what the river path is.

Since I think the ride ends near Echo Park (Echo Park Blvd & Sunset Blvd.), we could take Silverlake Blvd (rather than Los Felize Blvd. ? I'm open for suggestions here) back toward the LA River bike path, which is on the east side of the 5 fwy, back around Griffith Park to NoHo.

I'll plot it out on a google map later. Keep in mind that I'm probably the weakest SOB (somebodyonabike) among you so don't worry too much about being left behind by mr.superbikeracer cuz I'll be huffing and puffing behind you anyways no doubt.

Yeah... on the Swarm the Pier ride...From Glendale, I decided to wing it and see if it was open.. I went by the gate and could've sworn seeing it chained up. This was like 8:30pm. I had to go through Griffith Park and it was pitch dark. My poor cateye tried its best. I even said screw it... I'm not going up and down those hills and went on the bike lane against oncoming traffic. I thought they closed the gate into Griffith Park from the front entrance early but... nope... saw headlights coming. I made it but wouldn't do it again. Not a good idea. But check this out... at night, i excited that Victory exit from 134fwy and saw a biker standing in front of that gate. Did he exit from there? Realized it was closed and was leaving? about 12miles I guess and its flat except for going up over Glendale Blvd. The gate at Glendale blvd./Fletcher Dr. was unlocked when I went by a little after 10pm so I don't expect any problems there. If I can do it anyone can.

For all you first timers out there, I would recommend making sure to bring the following:

1) A cell pone
2) Cash
3) The 1-800 number for your favorite LA taxi company

I do this everytime I go for a long ride. I've only resorted to calling a taxi once - I was riding home from a midnight ridazz event by myself, and my chain snapped. It was 1:30 in the morning and I didn't want to wake anybody up to come get me.

It also serves as an insurance policy if you ride a 50 pound bike and don't know if you'll be able to complete the ride.

I had a great time. thanks for all the planning and preparation Mr. Raymond.

a note about corking:
the more and more I see it the more I realize corking is not feasable on a ride this massive. if it's a small ride of only 2-300 then it's ok, but on a ride of over 1000? it's creating animosity between drivers and cyclists. and that is damaging to the cycling community as a whole. the wait is literally 15-20 minutes for motorists. it's not cool to expect that much patience from them and it's dangerous for cyclists who may experience road rage from an ignorant motorist on the ride, or later on in the streets. I mean who knows? any suggestions? we really need to come to terms and solve this situation. my suggestion is breaking up into clusters of 1-200 ridazz - about a lights worth.

on a humorous note:
got this wonderous email from someone named andrea:

>"From: andrea <########>
>To: info@midnightridazz.com
>Subject: Nov. 10 - WORST RIDE EVER!!!!!!!
>Date: Sat, 11 Nov 2006 01:38:50 -0800
>
>Way too long - Up hill BOTH WAYS - lamest ever - shame on you"
>

these are the types of people who need to get some imagination and better yet some EXCERCISE. if ya dont like the ride route(something you are privy to at the beginning of the ride) and what the volunteer planners have done.... SIMPLY DONT RIDE. by all means, raise concerns and state opinion... but to go out of your way to send a nasty email? hahaha get the fuck outta here go to Magic Mountain or sit on a couch and watch law and order or something.

you can only enjoy the ride down the hill if you first ride up it.

santa monica critical mass was the same way last week. they changed the course mid ride because a handful (seriously less than five, more like two) of retards with fixies couldnt make it up one measly hill.

everyone was really stretched out last night. most people were late getting to the bridge because they stopped and helped that girl that crashed. it pissed me off seeing everyone just keep riding like nothing was going on. whatever happened to "no ridazz left behind"? or does that only apply to flat tires?

However, our main question: how good in shape must one be in? Some rides seem really long, but are they mostly flat? Are the different rides rated in degree of difficulty beforehand? Basically, we don't want to lag and end up screwing up the ride for others.

The rides aren't too bad. They usually aren't completely flat, but for every hill you ride, there is a downhill later on. As long as you're in moderate shape, you should be able to do it no problem. It's not a race. Just have fun and enjoy the sites and the company.

If you haven't ridden in a while, make sure your bike is in working order. Take it to your shop and get it tuned up. Also make sure you know how to change a flat and bring a spare tube or two and a pump. Front and rear lights a must, and hopefully a helmet.

I think someone mentioned blocking for 2 lights worth and then corking the Ridazz themselves. It's a lot of hassle to have to do that I know... and not many people seem to enjoy being told what to do... so all we can do is try different approaches until we find what works.

another thing is that everybody is in such a rush to get through the course that they end up leading the ride on way too fast of a pace. I wish people would treat this more of a leisure ride than a fast paced ride.

that being said there are people in the back who are really leisure about their pace... maybe this ride should be broken up into pack based on pace.

when we are at a Red light. please restrain yourselves and wait out the whole light before proceeding. That is really dangerous because those in the back may not even realize they are running a red and get hit by a car. I saw some guy last night who ran a red and the car skidded up to him barely slowing down long enough to miss the dude. it would have been nasty. maybe even fatal.

this is just about recognizing that we need to ride safely above all.

Unless you live in the neighborhood, theres no way you can look at the back of a spoke card and realize that the route is going to be a tough one.

Mob mentality is hard to overcome, when youre approaching an intersection and a coupla guys are shouting go, go, dont stop, you go. I even did the encouraging when I was in a small group of, well girls, and I could tell they were hesitating when the light turned red and we were going up hill. Sometimes you got to take the intersection. But the corkers need to know when to cork the cars and when to cork the Ridazz.

This was an incredible ride. It was my first, but certainly not my last. I thought it a great group of people. However, to the person who was angry because people kept riding past the girl who crashed, when I rode by I saw plenty of people had already stopped to help her and the logjam of additional people stopping only threatened to cause more accidents. Trust me, I would have stopped had I been there at the time of the crash, but it looked like more than enough people had stopped -- and with 1300 people, it would have been counterproductive for everyone to stop.

As for corking, like I said, this was my first ride and it was incredibly wild and exciting to take control of the streets. But I agree that it is dangerous and I saw a few close calls as well. We have to remember that this is a car town and when it comes to bike vs. car, the car always wins. Furthermore, we all know how little people pay attention when they drive because they're on their cell phones. I think it might be a good suggestion to break up into smaller groups, especially for those who know they want to go faster or slower. But there definitely needs to be someone who knows the route. I didn't get a card until someone handed me one at the first stop! I had no idea what the route was and was just following along. But I was impressed that even though it felt "unorganized" and free form, it went as incredibly smooth as it did, and there were always people ready to help out at various intersections. Kudos to all you Midnight Ridazz -- Ride On!

Oh, and to the person who complained that it was too long -- stay home. It was a great ride, a great route, and a great time. But then some people always need to find something to complain about, don't they?

I posted a new thread 'whats up with Ridazz" where I questioned some of the past few rides/ideas

I see and know that many people enjoy these rides. i have friends who never rode earlier rides... so for them these are awesome.

i dont think MR is based on a if you cant hack it, stay home mentality. I think a large point is to encourage support amongst each other and the promotion of cycling/ commuting.

That ride wasnt hard even if you ride moderately, but it didnt serve as a ride that would keep people together.

I dont recall who wrote the suggestion about different groups....if you know youre a slow rider, etc....that seems cool. I think checkpoints are the best....that shit use to be the shit...when you gather and watch the groups meet, drink some beer and talk to strangers....we dont seem to do that anymore.

Anyhow, though my thread may seem or come across as a diss...its not.

Hey, hey, what is this if you want to go slow crap? CruzzWithUs can be as fast as you want. Just cuz I'm slow...Maybe speedyBri will post a list of the bars and you can race ahead or something.

CruzzWithUs is a different sort of ride, shorter, becuz we bar hop, flat cuz its in the valley, but for a social ride its not too bad. While we ride its a MidniteRidazz type crazies on bikes atmosphere, but the stops are more fun cuz we drink, not to get drunk, just to wet the whistle. And on a saturday nite you don't want to feel like you're on a training ride for your next mountain century.

And with the size groups we have, its easy to halt the ride and socialize while somebody scambles to fix their flat tire. Just shout out if you need to stop. No worries.

TIME TO GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE:

Duckliondog - the first person that started helping me out with this ride. I mentioned the theme to him and instantly he knew of the graphic that would be perfect for the ride (the one on the FLYER and SHIRT). 5 minutes after that he put together the flyer. He rode the first scout ride with me and helped out a ton last night by handing out spoke cards and trying to keep things running smoothly.

Eric - this guy went out of his way to get all the spoke cards printed for me on some nice card stock. He printed out a total of 4 different cards and helped me til after 2am laminating those suckers!!

Deesimple - also attended the spoke card party and was a laminating mad man. he helped out from beginning to end and even though he ate shit he still kept riding!

Dennis - rode the 2nd scout ride with me and picked up the pinatas from my house to have a friend store them in his van at Echo Park. not to mention he must have bought the most shirts out of anyone!! Dennis also helped me fix a flat cuz I was taking too long.

Tony - also rode the 2nd scout ride with me, stored the pinatas in his van and raced ahead of everyone to have the fun set up at Echo Park.

Roadblock - offered advice when I needed it, and always had tips for me to help keep things running smoothly. this was the 1st ride I've thrown so I didn't really know what the hell I was supposed to do and he got the ball rolling for me.

Agent Orange - posted a thread about the shirts. 1st person to pick up a shirt. I was worried that I was going to get stuck with a bunch of those shirts, but he hyped it and they all went fast!

ALL RIDAZZ - for coming out last night and for taking those shirts off my hands. Oh, and thanks to the guy that gave me a Tall can of Pabst. That was great.

Hey, I thought originally we were supposed to go by a bunch of cemetaries or something...? You know, the theme, and it was going to be on halloween at first etc?

oh well. great ride ray.

I'm not proud, if I can't hack the hills, I just get off and walk and catch up on the flats. Which I didn't happen to do this time around (get off and walk, I mean)...but there's always next time.

we actually rode by 3 or 4. Evergreen, Cesar Chavez and Evergreen. A couple of them across the street from each other on Whittier (can't remember names). Then Odd Fellows which was also on Whittier. I knew some people wouldn't notice, and I wish we could've rode through them.

We went by at least thre cemetaries. Unfortunately, the people that run the places haven't installed arc lights over the graves for us to be able to see them at night. I don't know what their problem is! Pretty much al lthe times you were riding next to a long brick wall, there were dead people buried on the other side.

That was my first MR ride and I had a great time! Although I am not a very strong hill rider I liked the challenge, I found my weaknesses on the ride. I had no idea the length of the ride and if even with the a spoke card I didn't know what to expect because I am not familair with the area. But after getting back to my truck and all the huffing and puffing I did during the ride, I felt really good that I rode the whole thing with a group of great riders! I look forward to the next one! Hey ray, thanks for the shirt, the spoke card and all the work you put into the ride, and although I have read allot of complaints and suggestions of how the ride "should have been", I want you to know that "I" had a great time!!!! See ya next month!!!-$han

We're in a quagmire. We want to stay together, we don't want to be told what to do by "ride leaders", and we don't all have the same physical capabilities or bikes. therefore some are slow some are fast. The fast Ridazz at the front aren't likely to restrain themselves and slow their pace down, the slower Ridazz in the back are not able to ride fast to catch up to the front. It's become so massive that the ride gets stretched out over 10 blocks and then corking becomes an issue because motorists rightly get pissed off about waiting upwards of 15 minutes to get through the intersection.... these are all the issues that came up before when there was discussion of ending the rides and none of these problems have really been solved...

the original spirit of the ride was fun and to have friendly relations with motorists. as in come ride with us.

it's hard to thank a motorist who is steaming about waiting 15 minutes on their already traffic infested commute. it's hard to tell another rida to get to the right, it's hard to tell ridazz not to run a red when they are stopped. it's hard to tell the fast ridazz to slow the pace so that the group can stay together.... nobody wants these responsibilities and nobody wants to obey someone who takes it upon themselves to profess these responsibilities. so what is the solution?

the goal of this site was to create more rides and spread the wealth thereby making the second friday smaller... yet the second friday is the night we all love to ride on most and has in fact only gotten bigger it seems like...

there are always the ones who see this as the night bicycles take over LA. but the point is not to take over LA for one night, it's to take over LA forever by making the roads friendly for bikes at all times and days. if we are rude and rowdy and break laws loudly on one night then we run the risk of all cyclists will be seen in this light on other days.

just be aware that the more pissed off people out there become, the more likely law enforcement will clamp down and really spoil the party... so... what is the solution?

The solution? Keep riding and learning as we go.

What a great ride, excellent route and amongst fantastic people.

To those who felt the route was too hard, ride your bikes more. Being in good bike shape on a bicycle that is in good working order will always make every ride much more enjoyable. Besides that, being fit is a good thing for your overall health. If you don't know how to fix your bicycloe, take a clinic at the Bicycle Kitchen and learn how to do it yourself.

One last thing, it was really cool meeting Billy Savage. Make sure you check the screening of his film out when he has a Southland premiere: http://www.klunkerz.com I bet his bike does weigh in at 50lbs because my Schwinn cruiser weighs that much as well, even without the drum brakes.

I think you might want to head them off at the pass. The police (at least in the downtown area) are aware of and keep a relatively low profile currently but sooner or later enough motorists are going to complain about the traffic holdups.

I hate to say this but I think you need to start approching at least the local city council person and get their support and opinions, 500 to 1000 voters that gather every month draws attention.

Perhaps make every ride a charity ride, charge a buck for the priviledge of pedaling up and down hills with the Ridazz and start making some notable donations. I'll bet bike manufacturers would love to be able to associate themselves with the Ridazz. Make it hurt them in the pocketbook if they shut it down.

They're going to come after the Ridazz sooner or later, be proactive.
Or just do nothing and let the chips fall where they may or something.

Not everyone will ever be happy. I think there will never be a fool-proof solution, and there will always be people that are disappointed with the ride for whatever reasons. The best thing we can do is to get more people involved, and that is what this site is for!

If you have a major problem with the way rides are going go ahead and step up to the plate and throw your own Ridazz event.

We need to keep trying different approaches like more effective corking, or no corking at all, more volunteers, different packs, shorter routes, alternate (shortcut) routes available if you need to cut ahead. We'll eventually find something that works.

Also, it is a good idea to get into better shape. There will be hills here and there. L.A. is not flat and we can't allow ourselves to be confined to the areas that don't have inclines. Hills are a part of riding and I know MR is supposed to be incredibly fun, which it is, but it should also gear you up to make riding a part of everyday life. THATS WHAT MR HAS DONE FOR ME.

Everyone has a different idea of what MR should be.

I spent a great deal of time and submitted my opinion, maybe it was something I said, Is there censorship on here? just asking, not in a smart ass way but a respectful one.
Anyways
I went on and on how MR is a kickass, social way to tune the spirit along with 1000 strangers.
How we need to compromise for the greater cause of the ride..

My suggestion was :
HAve two acceptable ending spots on the course.

Fisrt stop = Where we all end up and collude to show that we are all on the same team and all those that can not keep going for different reasons can end there "guilt free" because it is accepted that not all ridazz can go the 25- 27 mile ride
We say our goodbyes

Second stop= all those that can keep riding will mount up ride as the second group to second spot.

This will lessen the amount of ridazz that:
1) randomly drop of cause they cant make the whole ride
2)turn back
3) most important- will keep the different types of riders coming back to the MR which we all look forward to.This would not discourage those that want to keep riding but can not do a 30 mile ride.

All about keeping it together. I personally enjoy riding with 1000 strangers that you would not hang out with on a normal scenario.
Slow ones, fast ones, in shape, out of shape, getting in shape.
Strangers yet we all feel we belong when we ride every second Friday of the month.

May be a bad idea or not..just trying to be part of the solution.

The really strong riders should tie ropes to their bikes so they can pull those that get tired.

Note to anyone who didn't get a spoke card from me: There were some cards that were supposed to go to people who had the shirts. I'm sorry if it seemed like I was being a dick, I love you all.

Good ride Raymond, you AnonimityTheif, strgazermel, Bootlegger, speedybrian, agent orange all put on some good rides with good vibes.

there are growing pains and pitfalls here and there but these massive rides are insanely fun still. the second fridays is the beast that it is.... it's a difficult task to figure out how to balance mass with all the obstacles that prevent keeping the mass together.

how about this? maybe from now on we just make the 2nd fridays about multiple starting points and one spot of convergence.... and then enjoy all the smaller rides available on other fridays. they really are fun because of the size.... and the drivers tend not to hate us so much when there are only 100-200 ridazz. it would still rock if we got 4 routes going with 250 ridazz each and all show up at some spot.... fuck it.... that's a lot of effort but maybe worth it?
