Other groups you hung with before MR.
Thread started by bentstrider at 02.20.09 - 8:19 am

After that lengthy dialogue with RBI in regards to the "LA Cycling scene", I'm just curious if anyone here was part of any major thing going on before stumbling into the world of bicycles.

As for myself, it was just myself and three friends I hung around with since high-school.
But, over the last couple of years, two of them moved away, one had a kid already, and another is just sort of flaking.

Generally, I was never much of a club-goer, or recreational-organization member.
While everyone else I encountered up here chilled with their car-crew, I was either working out, watching TV, or using my BB gun to go plinkin'.(Never fired a real one until '06)

i'm a very private person, so i'll tell you one thing i've been a part of.

i've been adding pigments to this city's bleek grey exteriors since 1999, all while maintaining a low-pro presence. i rep no crews but i have no beef and create beautiful art, so i wouldn't want it any other way.

We did mailart, poetry readings, absurd art actions, drank beer, etc., etc.
It was Midinght Ridazz without the bikes.

Wish I had a photo to post with this. Maybe later.

I guess I've always been a drifter.
MR is the first group that I have been really a "member" of.
There is Bicycle Bell Ensemble of course.
And the imaginary Hollywood J-Ridazz.
But MR really is it.

Over-The-Road drivers tend to all share a common bond and respect for each other.
There ain't no truckin' other than cross-country.

Local drivers on the other hand, we usually clown on them for their choice of driving within the city-limits and going home to nightly-drama.

I didn't have a life before Midnight Ridazz.

In simpler terms, that almost describes my life before I decided upon truck-driving as a career.
Now, with the truck-driving on hold until a certain amount of time passes, y'all are keeping the dream alive.

As much as I could try to fit in with the various levels of rock-hounds and ghost-town hunters there are out here, I've found most of these groups to be somewhat, exclusive due to car-ownership.

I choose not to own one and get looked at negatively?
Well, then have a nice trip, asses!!!

Let's see, growing up where I did, I had a few friends from around town, but I was already a cyclist an riding Mtn Bike fests, touring, and being a weird bike nerd.
Moved to florida and just kicked it with some peopel I went to school with (there really innt any one else to hang with, the rest of the population is over 75), this is when I got real fat, then I found MR within 2 months of being in the SoCal area...

Playing dungeons and dragons (still do). Doing bike stuff before mr. Choppercabras is more OG for sure (founded in 1998-1999). Playing music. Chicken-Head Zine etc.

I'm glad the bike thing out here has gotten so big, I think most people that are newer to this whole thing don't realize how lucky they are.

Groups?

Ok, let's see.

Music wise:

I was a young goth kid, meaning I couldn't get into the ilks of bar sinister, das bunker, etc, however I did make it out to shows every once and a while. That group always felt like a deranged family. I quickly grew out of that. Still love the music, still enjoy the scene, just it's impossible to truely feel a part of anything there being under 21.

Then came my stint with computers, and computer security, which left me with an online group to hang out with, and learn with. Intense learning those years I was in it. Taught me a lot about ignoring a person's physical attributes and focusing entirely on their personality and intelligence. However I still haven't recovered from it, in that I still have problems talking to people in real life.

Raver days, can't talk much about this, don't really have a clear memory of it.

Next came Crust Punks, that scene was fucked up. I got introduced by some anarchopunks who had been squatting, and quickly found it dying of ODing on drugs. I fucking hated that. I loved the music, loved the group, loved the ideal mentality of it all. Hated what it had become.

I started a literary magazine, and got really into literature, and writing. That quickly fell to shit. Who knew highschool kids were such flakes?

During all this, I had a stint with D&D(still ocassional addiction), skinpunk, metal. Most of the groups I hung out with were musically based.

I will admit though that one of my friends was a border-line "bruh".

The only reason we shared a common-hatred of the full-blown ones was due to the fact that we splashed a "bruh" truck with mud when he hit a speed bump real hard.

Guy was like, "I just washed this muthahfucka' 20 minutes ago, I'm gonna beat ur ass!!!"

He was like, "It needed it!!! That thing probably hasn't seen dirt since the last dust storm!!!"

I was a ballet dancer. I think y'all knew that already. Sometimes I still bust out the ballet shirts.

I kinda miss it — the athleticism, the fact that I could work harder at something and know I could get better at it, and then the artistry of performance. Learning the history of dance by dancing it. But I don't miss all the freakiness that comes along with it.

Ballet dancers are weird.

YES!

Don, awesome.

I use to be part of the LA punk scene. I would get games like keepaway, handball, dodgeball and capture the flag going outside and inside punk shows. The bands sometimes looked a little upset when a ball or person would crash into them. I even made a zine about pLAying. I later found a group that grew out of that zine.
