Ride On! Art Show

So there's been several different ideas on what kind of ride we should do for the Feb Ridazz....Think we can pull together Graff/Mural ride to go along with the art show an start at the gallery down town?

That's a great idea. This is the 3rd anniversary ride, no?

Just Kidding..
But seriously, Here's my rough draft proposal:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=681206
It's harder to come up with a route than I originally thought! I'd be happy to help scout it out. Things always change for the better when you do that. I was imagining the art district area. (Lots of bridges and overpasses.) I just don't know where there's any good street art. I don't get out often. :P I was also thinking and alernative ending could be at Plaza De La Raza inside of Lincoln Park rather than at the Brewery. Unless someone wants to throw a killer party there! .. eyah. That would be rad though. Thanks for checking out my idea.

Looks totally awesome Borfo!
Do you think that you could get a gang together to scout it out?
I might could meet up on Monday, but I've got a lot of work and school next week.
anonymitytheif02.1.07 - 4:42 pm
reply
Well, I'd like to do the bike winter events this weekend. But maybe I can squeeze it in. Monday would work out fine. If I can get some Tren Way, Armadillos, or Fluffers to help me, then I think I could have it set by Tuesday. Anyone want to scout with me?
I don't have resources for spoke cards currently though. Do you?
Aiiight!

I think Brassknuckle has the dying community laminator....

I'm willing to help with, or even host, the spoke card making gathering again. I have my own laminator and if I can get my hands on the dying laminator I'm willing to take it apart and try to breathe a little more life into it, if that's possible.
mr rollers02.3.07 - 11:59 am

Thanks Rollers. I should try to get the dying laminatazz from Dan and the Artwork from A-Thief before we meet. I don't mind doing some printing if no one else will.
I will also need some guidance with the scouting. I'm going to try on Monday and any other day before the spoke card making that anybody is interested in helping me with.
Thanks.

I know of five Caché murals some or all of which could/should be included in any street-art ride.
1) Southside of Sunset just west of Benton Way (pictured)
2) Southside of Sunset Boulevard just east of Coronado Terrace
3) West side of Glendale Boulevard across from Echo Park Lake
4) West side of Hill Street just north of 2nd Street
5) Northside of Beverly Blvd. east of Alvarado
6) West side of Heliotrope north of Melrose (across from the Bike Kitchen)

Just up Sunset Boulevard near Alvarado Street, the skate shop Brooklyn Projects gave Shepard Fairey permission to use the wall alongside the building several months ago for a mural — a massive, almost grid-like work that integrates his personal cultural references with political messages.
chrissy02.5.07 - 5:19 pm

Along Sunset Boulevard and into Echo Park, by Benton Way there's a pastel illustration of bubbly chickens in a pasture by the artist Caché. There's another mural work by the same artist just up the block east of Coronado Street: the ethereal characters on bikes along the wall, with the phrase "Ride forever" on the side. "This guy always changes this wall but always has these characters," Shepard Fairey says. "It's really cool."

On the top of the dilapidated building of the old Sunset Pacific Motel on Sunset near Fountain Ave, L.A.-based artist Kalen Ockerman, known as Mear One, has painted a giant image of a youth in a brown hoodie with several arms spread out like Shiva, with a can of spray paint in one hand, sitting in the lotus position.

Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood, there's something that looks as if it's straight from a 1980s video arcade. The artist: Space Invader, whose works are from the namesake game. "He's from Paris, he's a good friend of mine, and I think he's awesome because his pieces stay up," Shepard Fairey says. "This wall had a bunch of graffiti on it, and he put the mosaic up, and people don't look at it as graffiti, but it is," he adds, barely containing his excitement.

Then on Melrose, there's a Banksy piece, one of his signature black rats. This one's holding a paintbrush and says, "I'm out of bed and dressed — what more do you want?"
chrissy02.5.07 - 5:27 pm
reply
The largest Banksy piece that Fairey shows us is just a few blocks down. Along the top of a two-story optometry office is a large black-and-white graphic of Batman's sidekick Robin, holding a can of paint and a long red paint roller. "No more heroes" is scrawled in red script on Melrose facing Stanley Avenue.
chrissy02.5.07 - 5:29 pm
reply
And on Beverly Boulevard near La Brea Avenue, there's yet another Banksy piece depicting an old woman wearing a scarf, with the words, "You looked better on myspace." Above her lurks a piece by artist Thierry Guetta, of a man with a camera.
Our last stop is to see an elaborate portrait of a blue woman with long, flowing black hair by aerosol artists Retna and El Mac, on La Brea near 3rd Street.

The beer awareness of the rida who crashed in front of Pioneer Chicken was unparalleled. There were a boatload of crashes, some caused by apparent neophytes who have not bothered with reading the bicycle safety section of this site. The guy in the thick of the pack who did a sudden and unannounced quick stop right in front of me was guilty of this. I managed to just clip him and ride what my friend described as a nice nose wheelie for a bit, but came out unscathed. At least one person behind me was not so fortunate though as I heard the clattering of a bicycle and thud of a body hitting the pavement. I don't care if some goofball wants to thump themselves, but thumping others with stupidity is quite unacceptable.

haha. that was one of the best Ridazz ever. Those rolling hills on Soto were so fun. Visiting House of Spirits for our 3rd Anniv. was pure brilliance. The sharrows were wonderful. I thought the vibe was perfect. The stops kept everyone together - everything was awesome, except the crashes of course, but that's part of the dangers of Midnight Ridazz.
the reverend dak02.10.07 - 1:02 pm
reply
i thought there were too many stops, and they lasted for too long. We probably spent more time standing around than actually riding. Aside from the railroad tracks and the dead end, the route was ok. With that many riders, the U-turn across the tracks and the dead end were not well planned. Except for the 50 people at the very front, nobody had any idea what was going on at the belmont tunnel. The planners (whom i respect for the amount of time and effort it takes to put a ride together) need to remember that what works well on a scouting ride with 15 experienced riders, my not work well with 800 riders of questionable experience.

BRING EXTRA TUBES/PATCH KITS AND PUMPS!!!
You're kidding yourself if you think you can ride through the streets without picking up a flat and its bad form to slow someone else's roll because you're too cool to carry a basic kit.

I thought this was a great ride and much love to those who took the time to put it together. Great vibe and lots of new blood (no pun intended) . Whomever the guy was in the back group with us who called the group leaders and had the Thomas Guide to get us back home - Thanks, man. That's the REAL spirit of ridazz.
We missed the ride but I must say I've never seen a header by someone who ran over his own half-full can of beer. A crash like that would have killed any sober person! Get yourself a brain bucket!
Again, great ride.
PS. Let's do our part to educate the new ridazz - deliberately angering motorists is trouble. We make more friends by letting people by instead of taking up all 3 lanes and taunting people. We actually met a couple of cool cops during one of our stops and we were able to share the Ridazz message. YAY Ridazz!

Major ups on a great ride!
The route was awesome, and i think the stops were very well planned, and worked out great considering the unfortunate number of flats. I know ridazz who spent so much time hanging back and helping patch flats that they weren't able to catch up with the group til the second to last stop. I think it's important to have those stops on these massive rides, because there are a lot more variables, and it goes in line with the "no rida left behind" credo.
I think the guy with the Thomas guide was probably Chris from Pasadena. That guy is a saint.

A big big huge thanks to Theif and Borfo for making this an amazing ride!! This was easily the best anniversary yet. The gallery show was the perfect touch and classy as hell. I have to applaud the route simply because I found myself on a couple occasions riding in completely new territory. saw some great art and I loved those that took the initiative to make the official stencils.
and to those that complain... seriously, this is the grimey streets of LOS ANGELES not Disneyland, there's going to be adverse shit happening.... help out do your part to be safe and be prepared but give people some slack too when things arent dandy and pretty no one gets paid and no one pays to participate in these rides.... it's all just for the proverbial fuck of it. in fact if you have complaints, get involved and help out. join the beast.

I dunno what else I could have done with that quick stopper in front of me, other than just running him over. He was a dinky little guy and I weigh 230, so instead of just creaming him I risked a major faceplant. Landing on him would have been a lot more comfy than the macadam. If that's not cutting him some slack, I'm not sure what would have been a better option.
Some people want to listen and many others don't. I was done trying to tell dim bulbs what for a long time ago because it's pointless. A little personal responsibility and common sense goes a long way and there always will be those who will never gain either of those. Doing something about it in this case went no further than letting this joker know just how irresponsible his actions were.
The bottom line? Look out for the wobbly Ridazz, unless they aren't spilling their beer.

Midnight Ridazz...>>>RIDE ON!!
Wow Where to begin! Thanks of course to all involved in the planning of the EPIC Ridazz! And as the Reverend Dak said at the bell ringing ceremony at the Bell in Lincoln Park at 4AM, If your here you're a hardcore Ridazz. I love the fact the cops watched us and decided to go home instead of involment... :P
I shot over 1,000 images and had such great time. I was one of the unfortunate ones TAKEN OUT by another rida. I was knocked over by a rida at a stop. I guess they came in way too fast to the stopping crowd at a stop near the beginning of the ride. They didn't say sorry or anything in fact they got away from me immediatly. I was not shooting at the time, great timing since I shot 1k thru the night!?! When I stop in the pack, I will do it mid block always at the double yellow line and I announce heavily with my whistle, my hand w/ camera in the air and yell "STOPPING". Anyway, I'm so happy to be able to be a cyclist w/ a group in LA...
Thru these rides over the past 3 years, I have learned to become a full lane commuter. I will not ride within 5 feet of a car, and I feel safest in the lane. Big growth from this Dedicated Mt. Biker from Santa Cruz. By the way, I wear biking designed long leg pants(with Lycra I'm sure) for function not fashion. and I don't care what people think about my attire or accoutraments... 3 weeks ago as I crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, in 20 degree cold(Wind chill 4 degrees) I was comfortable. Most importantly I know who my reall Ridaaz & CM & Pleasure ride friends are. I'm happy cuz at every ride I meet new friends, at a great "club", only requirment to join is a Bike. Of which I have ridden for 40 years.
Peace & as I have said for over 20 years...
RIDE ON!

ride on guys. jeronimo I was speaking to you specifically. I was talking about people that complain about the route or some aspect of the ride that was planned. I'm not saying the Midnight Ridazz is some perfect entity that can make no mistakes. I'm saying we make mistakes all the time and that is what makes it what it is. somewhat random and fun and subject to the individual choices that all who ride along make. I hate to hear that anyone crashed. I wish everyone who rides would take the care to watch out for everyone when they make lane moves or handle soda cans etc. but like the above person said... the only requirement is to ride a bike... and of course to have a good attitude.... with each ride we learn more about riding as a mass.... next ride will be safer I'm sure.
ride on!

Major props to Brassknuckle for holding down the fort and keeping the "No rida left behind" spirit alive. I know on my first couple of Midnight Ridazz rides I had no concept of carrying a pump, a wrench and an extra tube...I would just see mabell and Monica and know that I was taken care of.
Ridazz got me riding and I'm happy to help carry on the tradition.

I got what you were saying. The route and twists and turns therein were great as usual.
