to protect or not to protect.... that is my question. A lot of personal info is being exchanged on this site and being that this is the internets, I'm inclined to think that there should be at least *some* level of privacy from random voyeurs who may or may not like bicycle riders or have malicious intent towards this concept of party rides..... then again it's not always wise to build fortresses.... what do you guys think? I noticed that some of the other bike forums do it, I've enabled it here starting today. If enough people dislike it I can make it open again... what do you think?

I like the idea. If people really want to see the just have to make an account right? No big deal. Just keeps the info out of google searches.

yes exactly. google and whatever other search bots are out there.... plus you will be able to see "who's been here recently" to see any lurkers out there.

hmmmm.
Thats a tricky one.
I mean ... at the end of the day, people have to take responsibility for what they post about themselves right?
I appreciate the concern for our privacy, but I think MR is an expanding movement and I can see the advantage of letting people peek in on us to get their feet wet and see what we are about.
I'm sure that as a free service this site can be a pain in the ass maintain and upgrade,
so not to pile on more work but ....
if people had a way of contacting eachother privately through the site or accessing contact information through (pw protected) profiles maybe people would'nt be transmitting their personal contact info so often on the forums.
besides ... whats to stop a snoopy person from registering an account to a gmail address and just getting in to snoop around?
or are you more concernd with spy/spambots?

I don't like it. Password protect the profiles if it makes you feel more secure. But unless you want to authorize each new member, it serves no purpose.
Lurking is a weird term, if there's nothing to say, why add to the banter?
Besides, since Lars is so hard to get a hold of, at least for me, BikeBoom has lost its luster as the premier site for the LA rides I'm interested in.

i always liked looking here without logging in, it felt more communal. i only ever joined the forum because i saw what people were talking about.
I dont know what personal info you see here other than email and photos, or is that enough to....OH YEA, there's probably some incriminating photos. if not now, probably by this sunday...
yea block that shit.

it's not about blocking any of this from public view. after all anyone can register and see there is no approval process for registration. it's that password protecting the forums requires a certain level of commitment to peek in and see the conversation rather than making it available to anyone and everyone including haters.... you guys call it though. I will take it off if the nays out number the yays....

I think this is mostly to keep google (et al) from crawling the site. In which case, nothing is wrong with that at all.
However, now that we have to log in to view the forum, can we get some cookie action so we can stay logged in for longer periods of time? :)

OK OK ... I'm lazy
if the the system kept me logged in from my machine indefinately it would make it more conveniant.
I don't think it would necessarily be a big disincentive for people to check out MR if there was a regestration process, as long as there is enough enticing info out there to make people interested.

coming from somebody (myself) who reads this forum too often. I can't read everything, so I don't why somebody who doesn't have any interest or negative interest would spend time here.
As for my run for congress, myself and the evidence of myself has ruined those chance.

Nay, nay, a thousand time nay. You want people to stumble in here, decide that it looks like fun, and start participating. Right? Making it password protected removes the "stumble-in" factor, only provides a false sense of security anyway, and is a pain in the ass to boot.
