Thread Box:
bent derailleur hanger... need advice.
Thread started by coldcut at 01.7.09 - 6:15 pm

okay, so a while back i broke my rear derailleur on my way home to tujunga from sherman oaks. at the time, i didn't realize how bad things were. it turns out that when my derailleur snapped, it put so mucb force on my derailleur hanger that it bent it inwards, towards my cassette.

i don't know what to do now. i'm jobless and broke, so i can't take it to a bike shop to get it fixed. is something i can possibly do at the oven or the kitchen? yeah, i should go down there, but it'd be a waste if it turns out they don't have the tools that are necessary.

also, i have mad verticle drops. if i can't afford to get the derailleur hanger fixed, is it possible to convert to fixed in the mean time? i know verticle drops are a no no, but is it possible? i just need to ride! i'm going crazy without my main source of transportation.

reply

you could make it a cheapo singlespeed by keeping the chain on a cog that lines up with a ring on the front so the chainline is pretty straight. the kitchen or the oven should be able to help you out with that.
also, fix your seat angle.

it would be cheaper to fix your bent derailleur hanger than to make a suicide hub. i know exactly where that picture was taken.

Take a picture of the bent hanger and post it. Hard to say if you can bend it back or not. You could also take it to the LBS and get some ideas from them if don't want to go to the kitchen.

This is exactly what I did with my bike when my derailleur's spring snapped, convert it to single speed. It won't cost you a single dime. Real easy to do.

word! thanks so much for the advice.

i love going to that park! on my way down to LA, i'll usually stop and chill there.

i had a friend tell me about making a suicide hub, but my drops are so vertical i don't think it'd work that well.

would i need a chain tensioner, or can i just take links out of my chain to convert it to single speed?

fuck yeah!

tomorrow i ride again!!!!!

you guys are awesome.

Hopefully your frame is steel, not aluminum. Although I have successfully rebent my aluminum frame, it is a VERY sketchy thing to do, as it can just *SNAP* off. I would think the Kitchen has a Park Tool DAG-1. If not, we have one @ the BikeRoWave.

Park Tool ITEM # DAG-1
Derailleur Hanger Alignment Gauge

The Derailleur Hanger Alignment Gauge can help solve a multitude of derailleur shifting problems, most notably with index shifting systems. This tool is extremely steady in operation and is simple to use. The tool threads directly into the derailleur hanger. The gauge bar holds a gauge which marks the distance to the wheel. The gauge then is rotated with the wheel to the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock positions, noting any differences in measurements. The alignment of the derailleur hanger is accomplished by applying pressure to the tool's arm. The results can be checked instantly. The DAG-1 is made of heavy gauge steel and is chrome plated for long shop life.

oh, thats what you mean by vertical drops. you mean dropouts. i thought you were talking about handlebars. yeah, take a few links out of your chain so you get the proper tension. i dont think chain tensioners work properly on vertical dropouts anyway.

thanks.

and yes, my frame is steel. if the kitchen doesn't have that tool, i'll be going to the westside to the bikerowave.

yeah, i was too lazy to say dropouts. hahaha. i should have been more clear.

HOLD THE FRAME WHERE IT.S BENT, A ANCORED TABLE VICE WIRKS BETTER, JUST NORTH OF THE BEND.

THEN GRAB THE BENT TIP, AND PIVOT IT INTO THE POSITION YOU WANT, USEING A LARGE ADJUSTABLE WRENCH.

BE SURE TO PIVOT IT ECACTLY IN TH OPPOSITE DIRECTION THAT IT MOVED OUT OF ALIGNMENT.

LOL! yeah, knittens and PrincesseButtercup have both been using my cat's litterbox. i'm not dirty, that's just one day of poo!!!!

thanks for that tutorial eddie. i do have a vice, but quite honestly, i'm far too afraid of breaking my frame if i do it on my own without proper tools.

THEN IF THATS ALL YOUR WORRIED ABOUT, PUT A TORCH ON IT. THE HEAT MAKES THE METAL BENT LIKE BUTTER, AND IT WILL NOT BE BRITTLE, AND BEND BACK LIKE TAFFY CANDY.

TRUST ME.

eddieboyinla
01.7.09 - 7:34 pm

word. i might be wrong, but wouldn't it also strengthen the metal?

fuck yeah, i never thought of that. now, to get ballsy enough to do it... or just wait until tomorrow. haha.

ONLY IF YOU OVER HEAT IT, IF IT ALUMINUM, NOT SO MUCH HEAT, STEAL REQUIRES MORE HEAT.

YOU CAN ALWAYS 'PULL BACK' THE HEAT, A LITTLE AT A TIME, AS IT COOLS OFF, AND IF YOU DONT THROW WATER ON STEAL, IT WONT TEMPER. TRY NOT TO GRAB IT TO THE POINT THAT YOU 'MAR' THE INTERNAL THREADS.

ATTEMPT TO BEND AFTER APPLYING TO HEAT SOURCE (OVER AND OVER AGAIN), EVENTUALLY IT WITH BEND EASY.

Or you could use the correct tool, which will not only allow you to determine that it is truly straight, but also apply leverage through the hanger by threading into it, and with a long enough lever that pressure can be applied gradually. Kitchen has one, so go there.
