Join Councilmember Tom LaBonge for a ride down 4th Street Bicycle Boulevard. This 6-mile bike ride will begin at Shatto Park, 3191 W. 4th St. L.A. 90020 [map] and go along 4th Street to Park LaBrea and back. For more information, email Carolyn Ramsay or call (213) 473-2340.
With that being said, and I'm sure most of you know about this ride already. Would someone clue me in on what is going on.
Is a congradulations in order to Ingipet for this happening, or is this a two-bit political dance by LaBonge. I could call his office, but I don't know what true response I will get. I trust this forum more then I would the Councilpersons office.

Hey sexy... where'd you get the info on the ride? On 4sbb? I can't seem to access 4sbb.com from work because of our internet filter. Check out the pic to see the reason of it being filtered. Funny huh?

The IAAL-MAF plans to represent, not because we love LaBonge, but because we love & support the idea of 4SBB.

Thanks for the info everyone... I never have visited lacbc's website. They've got the Lebowski ride on the calendar/events section.
Just out of curiosity.. are there ridazz who are members of the lacbc? I was thinking of joining..
Thanks in advance...

Before I was introduced to the Ridazz I became a member of the LACBC after hearing about the LA River ride, which I attended, and I wanted to support the organization. As a member you also get various levels of discounts at many bike shops in the LA area.

So does anybody know what this is going to be, beside a ride. Is there plans to alter the street to make it more bike friendly, is there any plans beside the ride?

Not sure what's gonna happen, but I figure it's a good idea to be there. I'm not holding my breath, but this could be the start of official recognition for the concept of a Bicycle Boulevard in Los Angeles.
It's gotta start somewhere, right?

(you know this already)
It did start somewhere, and that was with Ingpet and the 4SBB crew.
Thanks to her, yelling out "live the dream", this may happen

Yes, very true, thanks for pointing this out; in fact I know that Tom LaBonge got the idea for this directly from Ingipet.
My bike sports an original "4SBB Live the Dream!" spokecard.

Couple things about this ride. LaBonge is an LA history buff, and he loves the architecture and stories about the landmarks in his district. I imagine he will be pipping up with some great, little-known facts about the architecture and neighborhoods along the ride. Very Ride Arc-esque.
Speaking of Ride Arc; Alex unfortunately took a spill on 4SBB this week and can't ride. He hit some deep water, leaves and moss, his bike went skidding, and he tried to catch his fall with his arm, breaking it in the process. It happened at the intersection of 4th and Hudson, just below the golf course. As long as I have been alive there has been water collecting at this intersection (likely an underground stream). I can't make it to the ride to speak on his behalf either, but it would be great if some of you could. PLEASE impress upon Tom how important it is that a solution be found to this hazard. The LAFD who helped Alex said they have seen other bikers wipe out in this very spot due to the water.

didn't Rollerz go down, on one of those 4SBB afternoon rides. I didn't hear the story, but we stopped and talked to one of the local residents about the gutter water situation, right after Rollerz fell. He was telling the group about the grey water situation on 4th, and that the city didn't have a big concern about it. I think Mr Rlrz was just freshly injured, I had my Dad with me, I didn't hear everything this guy was saying and I don't know if Rlrz did either. I know a few people who where at this ride, where involved in the conversation. If you where there, and remember this you may want to bring story up with the Councilmember.

First off, bummer about RIDE-ARC Alex, really sorry to hear that. Yes, I did take a spill on one of the 4SBB rides and it was largely due to water. I hit a water filled pothole which was deeper than it looked and it jerked the handlebars out of my hands, then I proceeded to slide along said water, landing on my hip, hand and finally (helmeted) head.
I didn't get to hear the full story on the standing water issue in the neighborhood because I was pulling myself back together, but it's obviously a problem. The water itself helps to cause the potholes because it erodes the substrate.

What's the name of that documentary that shows what they did in Denmark and Holland(?) to encourage bike use and discourage car use on certain streets?
I've seen it a couple of times at BFF and at the Rose gallery in Highland Park. I'd like to give a copy to LaBonge. It's well done, not too long and it has interviews with public officials like him from other cities that have encountered and solved similar problems. I think he'd relate to it.

Ah yes, the portions of 4SBB in Hancock Park are pretty awful. I've almost eaten shit there a few times myself and I'm thankful for my fenders when I cross those puddles.
The water runoff comes from all those big suburban lawns and it does indeed cause potholes. Another reason to burn down the 'burbs!
Thanks for all who have contributed to 4SBB, especially Ingipet.

a brief call the Carolyn at LaBonge office, she told me that this is just a fun ride Tom is doing. Nothing official, she stated that the City is examining the idea of 4th Street becoming a bicycle blvd, as part of their City Bicycle plan.

Thank you mr Rollers, that's the one.
I just ordered it online but I'd like to give it to Tom LaBonge in person as a present today. I think he'll like it. I'm afraid if I mail it they'll just toss it somewhere.
Does anyone have a (non bootlegged) copy?
I'll trade you with a fresh one next week.

Man... great ride everyone. I never did a ride like this and I think it's a great way to help support 4SBB and cycling in L.A.. We were escorted by a black and white w/ 3 other lapd on bikes. LoL... I didn't know how to respond when I saw LaBonge corking. Pretty cool that he's trying to get involved rather than just riding up front.
We also ended up stopping at a fire station to use the facilities and to say hi to the firefighters. We worked our way back and rode up Larchmont where we were treated to a free scoop of chocolate chip.
We got back and spent some time chatting with LaBonge. All in all... it was fun and would definitely like to see 4SBB happen. Good work Ingrid and everyone else that are involved.

Big thank you to the Wilshire General Services Police Department for their marvelous corking and support.
I LOVE BICYCLE COPS.
i heard about the ride last minute and couldn't believe that LaBonge really listened to my 4SBB pitch...he planned the whole thing!
I loved just being able to show up and enjoy the ride.
thank you for the kind words said here....
