I don't get a sense of a set time spent up at the festival. It's pretty much going to be up to individuals if they just wanna roll through once and split or go back and forth several times.

Either way it's available for cyclists until 10 p.m. so don't let any later work hours keep you from coming on up.

PS. Here's some shots I took at last year's bike night:

I Got out of work at 745 and hustled to get there, I got there at 830ish and they were closed.

I asked the parking patrol dude what was up he said that they closed at 8 and to call all my 'midnight ridazz' friends to stop showing up.

:(

sadness.

randy, i feel ya. i got there at 8, saw one display, and as i took my camera out to take a picture, all the lights shut down.

the parking enforcement people i talked to actually told me they were scheduled to work the park til 10, and that they weren't sure why it was closing down early.

when i asked one of the guys in the orange vests who were picking up the cones, he had total jerkface attitude and said, "yeah that was a typo on the website"

i have a feeling these guys just wanted to go home early - especially since parking enforcement even admitted they were on duty til 10. oh, but on top of the lights shutting off early, motor traffic was being allowed through the unlit park - so i rode from the burbank side to the los feliz side in total darkness, with no holiday light display, praying a car wasn't gonna swipe me from behind.

go DWP!

I'm sorry to hear they shut down early. The general turnout seemed small than last year's and I'm guessing it had thinned to next to no one by 8 p.m. and so they used that as excuse to "conserve energy" and power down.

I got there too late for Tom LaBozo's opening statements, but he left his speech on the podium and it talked about "hoping this preview night will become a yearly tradition."

Smoke-blower. Now in its fourth consecutive year I'm wondering how much longer does the bike night need to happen before it's granted "yearly tradition" status.

I hate to always be the beligerent grinch just trying to represent at this event but I've got a chip on my shoulder the size of a 53t chainring.

The light show was geat. I can't say the same for the way traffic was managed in the park and along the light show corridor. I went through twice. First northbound where there was still motorized traffic coming south, on the wrong side of the road, with bright headlights. I guess these were the Park Patrol guys in cars and/or scooters. Also some lightless bike riders and walkers which were almost invisible despite the ambient lighting. Return (south) trip had other hazards. Lots of little kids on bikes weaving all over road, but we compensated by going very very slow and being very careful. Yet more motor vehicles, stopped in middle of road, and moving on either side of road. After end of light display section of road, cars being diverted from entering display area were turned around and did dangerous things like making u-turns after stopping on right edge of road. Motor traffic should have been diverted much earlier, like at Park entrance at Los Feliz. Despite these hazards and inconveniences, the ride was well worthwhile. I would not want to be there when normal motor vehical traffic was present however.

The shut the lights out early, which is bullshit. I was pretty upset because they "extended" the hours to 10 at the last minute for an event that is pretty much unpublicized in the first place. Bikes should be allowed through there EVERY DAY. So much for the greening of LA.

Who do we complain to?

Tren Way rolled in around 9, lights were apparently off (according to some cyclists we met at the corner) long before that. We saw several other bikes come in only to join in our disappointment.

Whatever, I should probably just get over it... why am I so surprised.

Why don't we rush through and water balloon the place.

Take photos, write up a manifesto, send it all in to the Times.

Or we could walk in with cardboard cutouts of bicycles and take photos - with "Why not?" signs and t-shirts or captions added later.

Or just fire. Lots of fire.

Hey all,

Has anyone seen these battery bike lights on clearance? I haven't gone to IKEA, but I did go to WalMart the other day. None at WalMart, but I did find some battery powered lights at my local Ralph's. They were $1.50 for two sets, works with C cells and they only had clear. Anyone seeing any lights on the shelves?

According to the DWP festival of lights website, the festival is vehicle free from November 25th to December 7th. I thought it was just one day. Did they extend it do to pressure from the community?

"To demonstrate our continuing commitment to a “greener” LA, the Holiday Light Festival will be a pedestrian only and “vehicle free” event from November 25 through December 7. Visitors may park at the L.A. Zoo parking lot or the parking lots on the south side of the festival near the Merry-Go-Round, or the lots near the pony rides. Parking will be on a first-come, first-served basis."

Oh right, a bicycle is a vehicle, except when bicycles are banned. So I guess on the Vehicle free nights bikes aren't allowed, which means we can bike the festival on the vehicle nights along with all the cars, is that right?
