Thread Box:
getting old and scared
Thread started by KiMS1 at 02.21.09 - 1:56 am

im just venting here,

ive been feeling old.

im 24 yrs old, will be 25 soon.

i know i know, im still young. but hey...

ill be finishing up school soon and worried about not finding a job.

im sure many of you are in the same/similar position.

riding my bike around town relieves the stress from all this but when i get back home, i still have to face reality.

it fucking sucks.

the next two years seem fucking terrifying.

that is all.

reply

I can't imagine it's easy being young in today's world, but it's a fact of our temporal existence that we can only sense ourselves growing older with each day that passes.

One day you'll look back at 25 and realize how young you were. The older you get, the more you have to reflect back on.

You're gonna be okay.

It's fuckin' tough times (trust me, I know it). And it's hard to know if the economy's getting better or worse — I hear both things on a daily basis — but it can't get MUCH worse than it is now, right? Heh.

I shouldn't have said that.

But fuck, even back in the Golden Era, when jobs were spilling out of highrise buildings in downtowns across the country, almost everyone I know got (or kept) a job-job after college. Something to tide them over while they looked. I know about two people who didn't, and they're assholes. Because life is not fair.

But! We will win in the end, when Armageddon comes, and roads are closed, and the only reliable method of transportation is bikes. Another good thing about the End Times is, "bad economy" won't make any sense, because the word "economy" will have no meaning. We'll be bartering with chain links and inner tubes and brake cables. Downside: Cannibalism. But you can't have everything.

Feel better?

Wow, after mr. rollers' wise words, my glib response sounds so ... well. Glib.

Yeesh. I'll grow up one of these days.

Actually, that's not very bloody likely at all.

(But you'll still be okay.)

Just keep in mind that there's going to be a lot of opportunity in the next few years as well.

While it's going to take more than just sending out resumes to get a great job, the extra homework you're going to have to do will pay off.

Set up informational interviews with alumni from your school that are doing the kind of work you'd like to be doing. Almost nobody does this, and it's about the single best thing you can do to improve your chances of getting a job. If nothing else, you get a free lunch and get to build your network a little bit. Do this often enough, and somebody will know somebody who's hiring in your area, and since they've met you, will be able to put in a much better word for you than if they just saw your resume.

Don't panic.

I'm just down-in-the-dumps because of the fact that my DAC/USIS report has soemwhat rendered my CDL useless for the next, two years.
To most, OTR-Driving companies, a clean DMV H6 and "no-criminal" record means jack-shit to them.
I'm basically limited to small, mom'n'pop companies with questionable equipment and operating practices due to that rollover accident from nearly, two years ago(this coming October).

So far, I feel as though I've been mourning for the past and refuse to move on.
And then there's the fact the double-whammy of having no work right now, while not being able to ride with a cool crowd due to the shit-town I have to live in for now.

So, let me just say right now that you're not old, you're still clean, you have no mouths to feed.
I myself reflect on these qualities and try to tell myself that, "well, at least I'm not in any shittier of a position than I could be."

Don't sweat it. There's no better time to deal with economic hard times than when you are young and have no responsibilities. If you've got no kids, no mortgage, no car loan, and no wife, you've got no worries. You will always be able to find enough food to put in your stomach in this country, and everything else is gravy at your age. I lived in a tent in the woods for a year during college to save money and it was probably the best year of all my college years.

In the grand scheme of things, what do you have to be anxious about? Waiting a couple of years before transitioning from job to career is no big deal.

You got alot to be worried about. It's all over after 25. It's just a long, long downhill to oblivion for you. Fortunately I have a few years on you, so it's not so painful for me.

Enjoy the ride. ;-)

believe it or not, the younger you are in the recession, you may actually be in better position to land a gig. as the sh-t hits the fan, companies will look to lay off older workers, who have expectations for full benefits, and 401Ks and such, and replace them with young eager beavers who know how to actually use computers, don't have families to worry about and get home to, and have never heard of pensions. it's sad, but i would definitely not like to be an older person losing his or her job in this recession...
you may need to wait awhile, do some unpaid internships and such to get some non-academic experience, and work harder than people have in the past, but things will come your way.

But like everyone else, I'm also freaked about the economy. So far I've been very very lucky. But if the shit hits the fan, I'd seriously consider just going back to school for a post-grad or second degree, taking some unpaid internships or somefin, so that when things eventually DO turn around, I'd have done something productive with my time that will benefit me later.

I've already finalized my decision to start taking the required classes to get myself into the nursing field.
Yeah, it's something I didn't initially have in mind from the get-go, but this time I better just think of it as something extra to have underneath my belt.
That and the fact that I'm not marred by the sight of blood, or other medical maladies will not bother me.

So it's cool to have a dream, but always have a fall-back plan, even one you don't like, to supplement your ass.

Like the old saying goes, "Part of life is doing things that you have to do."

Hey KIMs,

Someone said it already, the most important thing is not to panic. The country is going through a transitional phase and opportunities will present themselves in time.

You'll prolly get panic attacks as MAY comes around, just write down yourself some goals or a plan right now, so you can go back and read it and calm yourself down. How many times I had to talk down my friends, can't count it, and found the best way is to document a plan/goal, so you understand where you are going. I find people start panicking when they don't know where they are going.

Its also a huge downward spiral if you get lost in the panic as well, so make sure you don't go down that path

best of luck
-Marc

One of the worst things for me last year was when I graduated and had to get a waitressing job. I went back to school at the age of 37 because I wanted to break out of the career I had and do something more interesting. Now I have student loans to pay and and less of a career than ever. Still, quality of life isn't dependent on career for me. If I have good friends, good food, time to ride, and I am pursuing my own creative work, things seem pretty good. And I worked as a waitress at the Hollywood Bowl last summer, so I got to see all the shows for free. Radiohead!

25 sucks.
You have every right to be depressed.
Everybody puts a gun in your head: "So what's you gonna do with your life?"

Give it another five years till people lose hope in you and then nobody will ask anymore.

No really. As Sam said you have nothing to lose.
As Dingo said, this is a bullshit thread.
As Borfo said, FUCK YOU!

What you can try instead is something like this; "My dream in life is to make pink widgets. Does anyone know how to get there?"

I'm old and depressed is EMO.

I'm 30. Makes me feel ancient going to Crank Mob where everyone looks like they're in high school (and probably are). Makes me wonder if I ought to have better things to do at age 30 on a Saturday night. That thought hadn't dawned on me until I've started seeing the crowds at rides getting really young lately. I'll keep on doing it, though, makes me feel young at heart.

All this stuff about being depressed when you turn 25 is bs!!

I feel like I just turned over a new leaf, haven't felt this good in a looooong time.

Oh and I totally relate to the panic attacks, I had a debilitating experience with it a few years ago (heart arrhythmia to the max). I am talking 3-4 full blown panic attacks per day over a period of about 6 months. Each panic attack I thought I was going to die and paid a few visits to the ER. Once you know and believe the fact that nobody has ever died from a panic attack and learn the physics behind your triggers, you learn to laugh it off. I haven't had a panic attack in 2 years.

If you are having panic attacks and it's starting to depress you, this is what you need to do.

#1 read a book on panic attacks (biggest help of all)
#2 stop smoking cigarettes
#3 stop smoking weed
#4 stop drinking alcohol
#5 stop drinking caffeine

#6 stop eating fast food
#7 stop eating huge meals
#8 know your triggers

I have a really good book for you if you are interested.

Going on mind blowing physically exerting bike rides and hikes have helped me overcome the feeling of feeling old while being young. I just think about all the insane things I'm going to do in the future and I get way too excited to waste my time thinking about such nonsense.

MAKE YR LIFE RIGHT.
MAKE YR LIFE NICE.

THIS LIFE GETS BIGGER & BETTER.
OH IT GETS.

Take the reigns!!!! This is yr only life!!!!

I have never felt so young, but I swear my body feels like its 80 years old.

Something always fucking hurts and I am going bald

Also, I am pretty damn sure that I should have been born in 1946

I was definitely born 40 years too late

that's the thing. at this point in my life, I have never eaten better and have never gotten more exercise. and I'm always hurting

I am pretty sure that I am dying. But hey, we all are.

The moment we are born we are dying.

I can't wait to die. So much less stress.

I also drink an inhumane amount of cranberry juice - which is very good for your urinary tract -- drink up comrade

I was extremely unkind to my kidneys in years past, they don't hold up like they used to
