THE BADGER SONG
Thread started by

Okay, since this is one of the two east enders threads, and I really don't want to start a new one for this ride yet....I will post a preliminary here.
THE BADGER SONG starts in three weeks on Tuesday night...10:30 pm at my house ('10:30' and 'my house' is a preliminary tme and meet up point--I am up for suggestions).
This is going to be a weekly ride...and it will be fast. You might get dropped. Actually, I might get dropped. I have the first route ready. It's a little over 32 miles.
I know that some of you east enders are up for it...let's see how it goes....

I didn't mean to post this as a new thread, but I guess the word is out now. THE BADGER SONG will kick your ass.

so's this gonna be like an east end wolfpack?
FuzzBeast02.19.07 - 4:13 am
reply
I haven't been on a Wolfpack Hussle, so I really can't say. I've talked to some of the Wolfpack and I've seen the movies, but I don't really know. I wanted to start riding with them, but it just isn't doable, from where I live, on a week to week basis. Too much driving.
I think this ride will be similar in spirit, but it will be more suburban than urban--less traffic lights (and street lights), as you know.
Some ideas for routes:
down to Whittier Narrows
Pasadena
a loop around Ontario airport
p town via Grand / through Diamond Bar
GMR!!!--still closed to car traffic.
tern02.19.07 - 10:24 am
reply
I know what you mean about the not doable thing.
Once I get my whip rebuilt I'll be out for some hardcore pedaling, till my fat as collapses by the side of the road...

reply
Sorry...to those of you who are into the ride...I have to move it back to Monday nights. I have some TWBG to start dealing with. Plus, I can't make it every Tuesday.
I am a continuation school teacher....and I also do night school as a back up for other teachers--when they can't make it. So, it isn't a good idea to make Tuesdays about the Badger Song. One of my collegues asked me to cover for her on the very night I was planning the first ride. So, I am somewhat stuck on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays--I might have to cover night school. So, Monday will work, I hope. It would have been cool to have some of the wolfpack for our rides, and vice vesa. But, it looks like this is the only night I can commit.

I feel like I am in pretty good shape, but honestly, I am a bit afraid of that prospect. I only know of three people who are up for the Badger Song so far, besides myself. One guy is really fast. But, i'm not too sure about everyone else...I am hoping we can keep our first ride under two hours. I know I can do it. I pre rode the route.
tern02.22.07 - 9:40 pm
reply
HIlls are another thing...I have really used my rear derailer on the routes I have in mind for the Badger Song. I am afraid for the fixies / track bikes. This area has some hills on the funnest places to ride. But, as I write this, I am getting a mental picture of a bunch of fixie spinners dropping me like so much ballast.

Spoke cards are done. These are really cool. I would post a picture, but I don't want to wear off your happiness when you earn it. I will make quasi-newbie-Badger Song spoke cards for the first ride (for those of you who are o-g)....but it will take a while before the Badger song cards start showing up on spokes.
I am toying with the idea that the undisputed fastest rider on the first five rides (if there is one) gets to hold the spoke cards and dole them out. And, if someone else is consitently faster in the future...they get to hand out the cards. If I do it this way, I am reserving the right to make the final decision on who is the doler, in every case--and I'm sure we wouldn't be fighting over this anyway.
But, I might just keep them myself, and do the math on my own. If I do this, and I am getting dropped...I will wait until I can keep up in the front..lol...before I put a spoke card on my bike.

Tern, that's funny i mensioned GMR. i didn't know many other people knew about that. that's where me and my friends would take our cars a few years ago. too bad it's closed. good ideas u got going tho. i hope to make it out one of these nights. hopefully i'll be able to hang.

actually, it is good that it is closed to car traffic--we can ride bikes without fear of being run over by squeeling cars and mountain motorcycle racers...even in the middle of the night!

Okay, the day is Changed to Mondays, as you know if you've read above. And, the time is changed to 10 pm. This isn't a meetup time...this is a ride time. We don't have a meetup time....only a Start Riding time. I feel like am stealing...yeses to WlfPck for picking a great time and day of the week. I tried to get this going on Tuesdays, but it just won't work out... And, I have a new (better) place to start. I don't have the address yet. I will post it before the ride.
So:
Mondays
10 pm (Start riding)

VixObs--some of the East Enders are riding out to the SGV Pill Ride together this Saturday from Covina. We have someone comming in from P-town and another guy riding in from Whittier. You should ride out with us....But, you may want to drive out from your area...we have plenty of parking on my street. So, if you want to go on Saturday, we are leaving at around 4:30 pm. We'll ride into Pasadena to get something to eat. Then, we'll do a short hop back in our diredtion to meetup at 7:30 for the ride.
If you want to ride out with us, you can email me at either:

Badger Song, where we ride so hard it'll shred the ass out of your pants!
anyway, I just ordered a bigger chainring (46t) so hopefully I'll be able to hold up a bit better next time, pretty bad when you're spinning as fast as possible and hitting maybe 18mph....
FuzzBeast03.13.07 - 2:44 pm

yah the 46t will do u well Fuzz. i'm loving my 48t on the downhill/flat sections. but on the uphill that's another story. i gotta keep ridin it so it gets easier.

yeah, i figured the 46 cause of skid spots and it'll still allow me to climb,,, coulda done a 47, but 75.6 gear inches should be enough... be better than the 69 somehting i'm running now... got a pretty good deal too, only 40 bucks for an fsa pro... not as sweet as my sugion zen i'm running now but still...

hey I bet you guys don't know this but there was an obscure Heavy Metal Band from Idaho or something called Badger waaaaay back. The only reason I know is because my friend had a tape and the name was so funny for a heavy metal band. I kind of doubt that the tape still exists but if it does I will post the graphic. It was pretty funny at the time that's why I remember but I bet now it would loook killer for a flyer or log at the least. The graphic was totally heavy metal gnarly. The music of course sucked but they really went to lengths to make the Badger itself look frightening. Google images produced nothing I will have to make some calls....

What hill? That was Arrow Hwy. Seriously...I told Gordo the same thing before you met us at Peck Rd. Why the hell is that section of Arrow Hwy so fucking hard? It seems relatively flat. I encounter this phenomenon daily. There must be a bike demon hovering over that section of road. You made pretty good time on that section, man. You were at my house before we knew it.

by hill i meant climb, and it's pretty much the same as my daily climb... i've ridden it before, it's still uphill travel. and yeah it was a good ride, i wasnt complaining.
FuzzBeast03.13.07 - 10:55 pm
reply
Oh sorry. I meant that I have trouble with that climb every time I ride it. Really. I was telling Gordo- before we got to Arrow--that it is decievingly difficult. It's like a false flat. It kicks my ass. After a long ride, it is a sneaky killer. I was trying to say that you were fast up Arrow to my house. That's what I meant. Yeah, fuzz.

Let me tell you all about t.bone. Not only does he create great rides in the SGV, he is an elemental part of darcen. He does the one of the hardest things...he scouts. And--he is Badger Song. On our first ride, he was so fucking fast. Okay, he's a fixie guy--and by the time we reached Whittier narrows, 17 miles in, and stopped to see if anyone was behind us...he was right there--not even a second away. He had to average about 22 mph on that whole strech--which was not all downhill. that is fixie fast in my book.
When I said, "what the fuck--I didn't even know you were behind us", he said, "just Badgerin' along man." And, he sat there with us for about eight minutes, waiting for the rest of the group to come along (i felt waiting was needed because, at this point, we were a long way form any phone or facility--or any way out.) He handed us some gum and made us humble.
BADGERS!

The one two posts down--under the wolf pack hustle ride only has the date and time. Although, I was able to delete rides in the past, I can't delete this one....I cant even post changes to it. I'm into catching up tonite, that is if I can find some cleats for my shoes, my other ones decided that they'd had enough last night... popping out on flat ground at like 12 mph... oh yeah...
Inspected my cleats when I got home, I don't know how I was staying in this long as it was (pure hope maybe?), there's pretty much no lip left on em, must have been just the horizontal pressure of the spring holding me in... I can yank my foot straight up and out though...
Thought something was up when I went to brake on my way back from the valley ride and pulled my foot out skidding down a 3 foot slope onto the bike path... chalked it up to being a little drunk, thought maybe I twisted my foot a bit or summat, but now I know why it did it.
I'm gonna run to jacs in a minute on the outside chance they have some, if not, I'm out of pedals for anything but limping to and from the bus station for the next couple days until my set of replacement cleats I ordered the other day come in (if I end up with two sets, that's cool, I'll have one for next time).
FuzzBeast04.2.07 - 2:35 pm

Hey Fuzz, too bad about the cleats, man. Just to clarify, I only said 'catch up' because you couldn't make it last week. I meant catch up like: "let me catch you up on this movie" when someone goes to the bathroom. Or, after missing a day of work, someone might say, "Let me catch up to speed on this paperwork."
When I looked at what I posted above this afternoon, it looked a bit condesending, but that's not how I ment it. Okay, yeah.
And tbone--sorry about the bottom bracket trouble...man, that sucks. We'll, I'm looking forward to seeing you guys soon.

Um...it's 40-50 mph :-))
And, it's 30-40 miles long.
I should check the ride post ;)
Come on out.
Sorry for the confusion. We ride as fast as we can. I don't bring my bike computer on these rides. So, actually I don't know how fast we go. But it is 30-40 miles long. We had to make some accomodations for some tired, injured Badgers in the last few weeks, but we're getting back to business. So, 30-40 miles--distance, not neccessarily speed.

But, I have digressed. This is about THE BADGER SONG.

Oh....by the way, for those of you who weren't on the ride....some guys in a truck drove by us and shot me with a bb gun. One bb hit my bike somewhere, and one bb hit me in the left tricep. I have a big welt to prove it. Good thing I was wearing a thick flannel shirt.
tern04.17.07 - 1:56 am
reply
what? when did u get hit with the BB gun shots? i didn't know that. u never said anything. hope ur okay. what part of the ride did this happen?
yah i really enjoyed that bike path part, it was mostly downhill too but kinda dark, and it was uncharted waters for me which didn't make it easier to navigate. hill climbs killed me, took everything i had to stay on my bike. lol. i need to look into gettin me a headlight. in due time i'll have one. i just recently bought an Izumi track chain and Pedro's floor pump. Good ride yesterday everyone. Lookin forward to next week.

When we were riding up Lone hill--near Foothill. A four door truck passed Gordo, J and I. Some guys were looking out of the windows. I couln't really see them well because all of the other windows were tinted.
Okay this is my thought process over the course of about three seconds. At first I thought the truck tires were kicing up some nasty road debris--like sharp gravel. Thats when I heard the 'ping' on my bike frame. Then I realized they were shooting at me. They hit me in the arm, pulled to the left and turned left. I didn't get a chance to see their licence plate. And, I wasn't about to follow them. The rest of the ride was hard enough to take my focus away from that happening near the beginning of the ride.
It really sucks. I'm not hurt badly at all. But, still it really sucks that someone has such disregard for others.

I mean... you had those punk kids that got caught w/ the video camera who were shooting people w/ the paintball gun. They showed this one guy on a bike getting hit and it sucked. It pissed me off to see that and it pisses me off to hear that one of you guys got hit. What were they thinking? Well... glad to hear you guys are good and I'm going to try to join you guys one day for a ride. Maybe get some of the cubcampers to go out there. Lates...

Tern ,
You should file a police report.
There is a decent chance that those idiots will do the same to somone else. If you file a report with the description of the truck it might help build up a case against them.
Plus I think its important to have a record of cyclist assults.
I think we need to make a database.
Can we get "mode of transportation" added to the hate crime list? This shit is getting fucking absurd!
trickmilla04.18.07 - 11:29 am

yo trick
Literally everything you said in that reply, I was going to post last night. I think we ought to report every single incident, no matter how annoying it may be to deal with cops/paperwork. I think it's important that the city realizes that cyclists deal with harrassment and road rage on a daily basis.
And I hate to say it, but we all know that one day one of us ISN'T going to get lucky and someoen will be seriously injured as a result of one of these attacks. We need to advocate for ourselves, and our right to safe streets.
kyber04.18.07 - 12:21 pm

trick is right. from now on I'm going to report everything too.... I dont like hassling cops but it's the only way to get some sort of record and statistics going..... or.... maybe it really is just time to start packing weapons. bear spray (as someone said on here) guns whatever's clever. they attack us with cars and other deadly weapons what's our defense? I'm sick of being intimidated on the road. if this were the netherlands I could easily ride to a place as far away as west los. as it is now I dont feel that safe so a lot of times I drive over there when I have to. this country is done. trust me on that one.

i'm down for the Badger Song/Wolf Pack summit. When is this gonna happen??
t.bone05.16.07 - 12:18 pm

Okay, I'm not trying to be a scaredy cat, but after looking at routing...for Wolfpack and Badger Song to meet in Whittier would be a bit much, I think, for both rides....we'd basically be dealing with a bit of Turnbull Canyon. That is doable, but pretty intense climbing...not something that either ride really does very often, from what I know and from what I hear.
So, the Coach has been mentioning meeting somewhere in SGV for a long time. From what I hear, Wolfpack is fairly familliar with Huntington Dr. So, are we. Maybe we should meet there on another ride.
What do you say?
tern05.20.07 - 3:29 pm
reply
The climbing on turnbull is pretty tough but it is only a few miles. I wouldnt try it on a fixie for sure. Even if everyone did have gears, i would still be worried about the descent, considering the lack of lighting on that street, and the fact that people drive like maniacs on it. Somewhere on Huntington would be better.

Gordo has already shipped his road bike to upstate Ny. So, I'm gonna lend him my single speed 29er for tonight. So, the four mile ride up to GMR will be slow (33x16) if you want to wait for the regroup at the base. I'm gonna ride the first 4 miles up there with him. But, powerhouse that Gordo is, he will probably pass you on that bike before we get to the top. Gordo has been a huge part of the Badger Song since the beginning, and this may be one of his last rides. So, I'll ride slow with him to the base. Then, we'll catch you on the mountain, if you decide to lead off of the front.

They are using where I live to generate user trail url pages hence the Norco city in some of the routes, but I fixed that. My plan is to make a map for every time we ride so we can have a way to track what we do and also allow other people in the area who are near by to join us.

Definitely one of the Best rides with Badger Song. GMR will always be one of my favorite places to ride. The fog on the way up kept us kool. The ride back down was insane with the zero visibility, drizzle, and cold temperatures. Glad we got those flat tires out of the way before we got into the canyons. that would have been horrible since we couldn't really call each other. Good job everyone. Gabe for conquering GMR after riding for only a month (invest in a nice light buddie). ERNIE.... ur the most hardcore fixed rider i know. U KILLED IT!!!!! BADGER SONG F*CKING ROCKS!!!!!!!!

I can now safely say that the Badger Song loves the cold, loves the wind, loves the rain, loves the dirt, loves the tar and the muck.
We'll not only survive the winter, we'll grow--and we'll thrive.

Cool, another, non-weekend ride that is marginally closer to where I live than the other ones I've done.
Mondays seem pretty doable, as that is one of my potential off-days.
Time to film some new videos for myself, so I could superimpose the Stargate theme song over the back of it.

Man....I am excited about moving the ride to Thursday. We are gonna rebuild the ride...with our existing riders...and invite everone else along. We are gonna start out short, fast and sweet....and build mileage and speed until we are back up to speed.
So come on out everyone! Thurday nights....
Come on out Juggernauts....I'll see you guys at your ride tomorrow...for sure.

Okay, if you new to fast rides, and you are interested in riding fast...this is the best time to start the badger song. As stated above, we are moving the day we ride to Thursday. And, we are rebuilding the ride, with the current riders, and inviting every one else out. This means that we are gonna keep the rides short at first...18-25 miles. This is an easy distance for anyone currently riding badger song. Over the next several weeks, we will build ride distance up to 30-40 miles on Average. Also, we will build speed. Once we are up to speed and distance, we will stay there...and get faster over time. It is a good time to start if you are new to fast rides, because you can start at the shorter distances and build up speed and distance as we go.
We TRY not to drop people. In fact, it doesn't happen very often. We always stop at turns to wait on people....or give clear, easy directions on where we are going....and we do it in segments. So, if you are worried about getting dropped...don't worry about it...especially in the first few weeks of the rebuild. We take care of our people.
If we are gonna do any major climbing, we will post it before the ride...just so no one is too surprised. You're not gonna show up and get hit with..."guess what, we are riding Azusa Canyon to East Fork." That won't happen. Also, we won't do any major hill climbing for the first several weeks, until we are back up to speed and distance.
So, there you go....we want to be your crew. Come on out.

Also, a bunch of people have told me that they are afraid that the ride is too hilly for track/fixies. Not so. Usually, we ride fairly flat...with small hills here and there. When we do the major climbs, the track/ fixies still come out....and press it up the hills slowly. We don't drop anyone on the major climb rides. We look out for everyone and we ride in small groups. Besides...major climbs are like events for us...and we post them before hand. They don't happen very often. On the last bigger climb we I did, I rode my single speed 29er...a big ass single speed mountain bike with a suspension fork. I made it slowly, but I made it. So, what I am trynig to say is that we are totally track / fixed friendly....we want more track/fixed riders...come on out.

some badger song riders commuicate about our ride on a google group. So, thats why you see relatively few posts on this thread recently. When you start riding with us, we will put you on the group...so you will hear all the ins and outs of stuff.

A bad night for me....this is the frist time in all of these months that I haven't been able to finish a ride. a trie kept unseating from the rim. I thought I had it fixed before we left, but about 3 miles into the ride, it unseated. I had to ride home on very low pressure.
Everyone else kept going. They are taking the last leg out of the ride....because of all the time I spent tring to get my bike going before the ride.
I would have been ready on time, if my circuit breakers hadn't switched of at around *:30....I had to deal with that befrore trying to get my bike in order.
A slim showing on our first Thursday ride....two new riders came out though, I hope you guys aren't totally turned off by the ride. I just didn't come together tonight. And, Thanks Creative Thing for comming all the way out from Long Beach.
