RIP Sheldon Brown
Thread started by toweliesbong at 02.4.08 - 11:31 am

You will be missed by all cyclists, even by those who didn't know you.

You were a great prankster, wish you could have made it to an MR ride.

User "Sheldon Brown" was one in a million. He was as authentic as they come.

When he came down with the disorder that robbed him first of his beloved hobby and then his life, he was not bitter. He tried gamely to keep riding bicycles for a while, and when this finally proved impossible he accepted his fate philosophically, never hiding his condition from his readers. Authentic!

One in a million. User "Sheldon Brown," it's too late for you to use this, but as a posthumous honor...

We should do a Sheldon Brown memorial ride in town soon.
Maybe something that passes by several bike shops?
Something that involves as many biking communities as possible.

I met Sheldon 2 years ago at his shop outside of Boston. he told me a lot of crazy shit. I was a little distracted because i was in the basement of Harris Cyclery with some cyclists who worked there listening to Sheldon stories. It was super dark and Sheldon looked insane with his beard and shaved head. he rode this pretty cool fixie from the teens.

Awwww man... I am shocked. SO sad. I spent countless hours reading Sheldon Brown's website when I got into riding.. . even exchanged an e-mail w/ him thanking him for it breaking down so well for new riders, and he kindly took the time to respond. I gained so much confidence by following his advice... things as simple and mounting and dismounting a bike. They are only simple when you've had lots of experience riding and he graciously shared all he had with the bicycle community!

"Sheldon's wife Harriet sent out mail this morning saying that Sheldon
Brown died of a massive heart attack last night."

Really sad, if true (remember, we are on the internet). Sheldon Brown's writings taught me more about bicycles and riding than any other source. He seemed like an original.

He worked at Harris Cycles in West Newton, Massachusetts.

Here is a story from Bikeradar.com:

Sheldon Brown, the human encyclopedia of bicycling knowledge and a famous employee of Harris Cyclery in Massachusetts, died of a massive heart attack Sunday evening, February 3, according to his wife Harriet.

The 63-year-old bicycle expert was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis in August 2007, limiting his prior upright bicycling and workload. His many trademarks include a longish gray leprechaun beard and shaved head. He was also well-known for patiently and thoroughly answering his 500 - 1000 daily emails.

Our thoughts are with Brown's family during their time of loss. His contributions to the bicycle industry were great, and his enduring legacy shall be greater.

Your name was always one of the first when it came time to quote the bicycle experts. There will never be another like you again. You'll be missed by all here at MR.

We have to do a ride in his honor. I would like to see a memorial ride on his birthday too. The ride should be celebrated every year till the end of time.

A memorial would be an awesome thing to do at the Salton Sea trip too.
