Results from yesterday's Messenger Race:
1st Jack
2nd Todd
3rd Beatriz - only woman racer
The race was 100 laps of the Encino Velodrome. Bikes had to be equipped with cages and no brakes. Racers cannot wear spandex and had to carry a messenger bag. The race was sponsored by Orange 20.
There was a pack of around 15 racers. The race started tight for the first 15 laps. Then Beatriz, Jack and Todd broke away, lapping several in the field 6 or 7 times. There was no catching them. Though a few attempts were made. The finish was a sprint.
P.S.
Jim C (Orange 20) raced and lead most of the first 15 laps. Ozzie was the only working messenger in the race.

I'm not sure if it was posted anywhere but there was a flyer at the 20. It was also billed as the $10.000 race. That was the purse for the pros. The pros had to race 400 laps, 100 kms.
There was a swapmeet just before the race.

Many thanks to everyone who was cheering us on. I didn't plan on racing, but then Meagan showed up with a bad back, unable to race. So having a bike, bag, and helmet I could borrow...and after some time of being told I should race, I decided to race. The bike fit a bit odd but it was a bike (a gorgeous bike!). Thanks meagan for letting me use all your stuff. THE RACE WAS A BLAST. THANK YOU ALL WHO TALKED ME INTO IT!

I have to admit when I first saw the topic name I didn't think much of the race (messenger/encino?), however this sounds like it was an awesome race. Wish I could have been there.

The pro 400 lap scratch race was awesome. The pros were averaging 27 mph. There were close to 50 racers at start.

Lets get some high and mighty shit talking. That is my favorite thing.

Goddam I wish I would have raced. I thought there was a "you have to be a working bike messenger" requirement to race.
I hope they host more fun races like this in the future.
sc_nomad, I am beginning to love the sight of your pickup truck loaded with half a dozen people and twice as many bikes.

CH,
It's funny that you mentioned the pick-up loaded with bikes, some people just hate it. But what can we do, we don't live in LA and at least we carpool.

Who hates it? Not in front of me, they won't. Anybody hates on Nomad's truck o' bikes and they'll get a face punch. pop pop!!

Thanks CH. I don't really care though since it keeps me riding and help me keep my job.
