Thread Box:
RAISING AWARENESS WTF?!?!?
Thread started by KiMS1 at 04.10.09 - 11:12 am

raising awareness.

that's all you ever hear about nowadays.

is it just me or is "raising awareness" just a huge fucking cop out.

is it just a way for people to feel good about themselves by doing absolutely nothing?

i mean, everything from facebook apps, to freeze project, to the super hypocritical earth hour.

srsly, what is this shit?

if people truly want change, they need to get the fuck outside and actually put some effort in.

NOT approve some retarded facebook app.

NOT go outside and "freeze" to raise human trafficking awareness. these idiots go do their petty demonstration to raise awareness for human trafficking but they happen to be wearing their sweat shop produced nikes. wtf?

and with earth hour, jesus christ, that was one of the WORST. "hey everyone! turn off all ur energy efficient appliances and burn candles for light!!!"
wtf? burning candles gives off more CO2 than having ur CFL bulb lit.

but whatever, fuck the environment, fuck the cause, fuck everything. as long as we are RAISING AWARENESS, nothing matters.

FUCK THIS SHIT PISSES ME OFF!!!!

no!!!

borfo,

do you see where i am coming from though.

i go to school with a bunch of "liberal do gooders" that know NOTHING of politics, current events, or sciences that are involved in their causes.

they just pick up whatever they see on huffingtonpost, warp it into something way simplistic and do some sort of stupid event for it.

it just drives me insane!!!

aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh

and you look mighty handsome today as well

I agree that activism requires activity, but I'm not so sure broadcasting your hatred (in and of itself an odd way to "raise awareness") of others' methods is going to accomplish anything positive.

Maybe to you I'm a FAILenabler but I did the Earth Hour thing. Shut the entire house down from the breakers and sat with the wife and pets for the interval talking and relazing by the light of a couple candles. It was serene.

The bad thing about earth hour is the havoc it can cause on the energy grid if everybody actually participated in it. Could you imagine what it does to the grip for everybody to cease using electricity and then all turning it on an hour later. People have no clue what it takes to get a power plant on line and to take it off. Its an 12-15 hour process each way. I'm sure that electricity production was reduced very little on that day. The energy control operators probably told the power plant control operator to reduce your load very little and bring them start bringing them up before this is over. They might have just let things be as normal and run the not used electricity into the ground. Unless you work in the electricity industry in the section that produce and distributes the energy you would have little knowledge of what a mess this could create. Thank God not to many people participated in it, it could have created a horrible mess.

what pisses me off are folks that do these small things such as flicking off a light switch for an hour, or doing that freeze project meet up, and afterwards, feeling like they actually made a difference. then they go about with themselves with their normal habits.

its making people lazy and it's more harming than beneficial.

and almost none of the people involved know the facts about what theyre "raising awareness" for.

theyre just doing it because it FEELS GOOD.

KiMS1

KiMS1 I hear what you're saying. Yes, sometimes people "jump on the bandwagon" and protest or freeze or do whatever it is to feel like they're doing something. And yes, sometimes they don't fully understand the issue at hand. And yes, after they do that particular activity, they do go back to what's normal in their lives and probably don't think back about what they just did and if it even made an impact.....

Then again, there ARE those (such as myself who IS organizing the FREEZE PROJECT TOMORROW IN HOLLYWOOD) who WANT to make a difference, who WANT to raise awareness and WANT to inform people that human trafficking IS a local and global issue. A lot of people think occurs outside of the US. Hell, some don't even know that it's even occurring in their own neighborhood. When one has an interest in some type of cause, we do hope that the person takes the time to research and find as much information as possible to arm him or herself with knowledge. With that knowledge, comes the drive, the drive to want to do something about it. Hell, if someone doesn't take the initiative, WTF is going to happen to this world of ours??? As of yet, we don't have any other options of going to another planet. We have to deal with the current situation and fix it. If we don't fix it, then what's the point of having rules/laws/etc and not even enforcing them? WTF is the point of being here anyways? Are we going to just ride bikes, drink beer and smoke out all effin day? There's more to life than that.

Going back to the human trafficking issue....I don't know you, your lifestyle or anything... but can you imagine being SOLD as a 7-yr old kid by your family just so they have money to buy food? Then you're brought into a strange land where you don't know anyone at all, and are forced to "service" as many people in a day, without leaving your room? All you have is a bed mattress without any sheets and the clothes on your back. Or try imagining that the 7-yr old kid was your youngest brother...sister...cousin...etc. Wouldn't you want to do something to either prevent that shit from happening? Or even stop it?

Did you know:
- Human trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery. Victims of human trafficking are subjected to force, fraud, or coercion, for the purpose of sexual exploitation and/or forced labor. Victims are young children, teenagers, men and women. After drug trafficking, human trafficking is tied with the illegal arms industry as the second largest criminal industry in the world today, and it is the fastest growing.

- Human trafficking is the second largest and fastest growing criminal industry in the world. With reports by the U.S. State Department estimating that between 14,500 and 17,500 foreign nationals are trafficked annually into the U.S.

- Child sexual exploitation happens because there is a demand for children’s bodies. There are men and women who pay to have sex with a minor and who will travel to places around the world to do so. Child sex tourism is on the rise, however, so are the number of laws being created to stop it. The demand side is often overlooked, but is something that must be addressed in order to see this end.

I'll step off my soapbox and leave you with this:
Child prostitution is a complex issue. There is not one reason why it exists, therefore there is not one action that will bring it to an end. However, a better understanding of the issue is one way to contribute. Learn about it through books, movies, articles, and searching the Web, and then pass the information on to others. Start a conversation, and let this be the beginning of the movement.

What are you going to do? Did you just skim through this posting and say "eff it, this is not my problem" or are YOU going to do something?

what you're doing is very noble.

the first part of the solution.... is awareness. you cant have action without awareness of the problem. you cant have a solution if people dont know there is a problem. once people understand and are aware the rest is easy.
