Hollywood Central Park

I know that this is not strictly bicycle related, but I think that this is an idea that would be interesting to the bicycle community. So apparently there is a plan in progress to cover the 101 freeway from Hollywood to Sunset Blvd to create a 26 acre "central park". If all goes well, construction should start in 2010 and take two years to complete. Aparently this has been in the works for a few years now, but this is the first I've heard of it.....

What an incredible idea! Just as I was starting to loose faith that this city would ever come up with an idea that is simple, creative, and something that this city desperately needs!
Next step, bike paths!

10 to 1 that if they ever finished it, by the time it was done they'd decide that it would be better to run a double decker freeway to get more throughput instead.

Or they'll determine that the land would be better utilized as a parking structure.

Knowing city planning in LA, this is quite probable. The 101 in this part of Hollywood below street level with the blvds passing over as overpasses. So basically they would just cover the freeway and it would run as is under the park. They say estimate it would cost 200 million dollars to convert this area into a 26 acre park (that is less than the actual land value in hollywood). Apparently they have successfully finished similar projects in Barcelona, Detroit, San Diego, and Seattle....

Don't lose hope so quickly all.
I have seen it done here in Diego. Infact, I see it when ever I'm forced to drive to work. Trying to minimize that part. But I digress.
It's pretty cool how they did it on the 15 here.
Actually they are talking about doing it over the 5, to extend Balboa Park into downtown. That I'll believe when I see. But it really can happen. And if my f$#*ed up city that can barely wipe it's ass can pull it off. LA has at least a 10% better chance of doing it.
Would be really cool to see.

Drew,
I tried to find that section of the 15, but couldn't. Can you post a link to the map with this section?

I love SD, Drew.. Maybe it's only because because Pokez is there.....
I wonder if this will ever happen. Some putz will probably want to develop that 26 acre wood into posh bio dome-ish living quarters for the tragically hip.

I love SD too. That's what's so maddening. We do some wacky stuff down here governmentally speaking and it's so sad.
Unfortunately Pokeez can't save us. But it sure tastes good.
I should be up on Friday. I could bring you some, but I'm not sure how it would travel.

It will probably be soggy and not very pokey-like. Thanks for the offer, though. What are you coming up for? There's tons to do this Caturday.
