I looking to generate interest in doing some downhill rides/races on 16" kids bikes.
My projected date is the 3rd Friday night of Feb (the 17th) unless things change.
There would be a few simple rules to keep it fun:
1. You must have a 16" kids bike that is unmodified. There is high end gravity bike racing out there, we're low end. It would be easy to make a bike faster by upgrading but that would fly in the face of the overall theme which is to have loads of fun on a shoestring budget. Also, even if you're 6'3 you have to hunker down on the same Hanna Montana rigs that we all have.
2. Your bike should cost less than 15 dollars, better if it was free or dug out of the trash. Pink is the new whatever, but I expect to see lots of pink bikes on white tires at the start line.
3. You will be responsible for having a light set up, and protective gear. You may crash and roadrash sucks so use your best judgement.
4. Most importantly the goal is to have fun, do not take this seriously.
Feedback is encouraged, I'm going to be scouting hills in the next couple weeks and get the first date off the ground, we'll see if there's interest after that point. We can do it once a year, or once a month depending on the interest. There are loads of hills to be bombed we can make this mild to wild depending on what people want. Of course if I don't get at least 6 riders then I guess it will be a one time thing as I have a lot of other events on my plate already and I'd rather go for quality over quantity.
I was thinking Laurel or Cold Water canyon towards the West side. At night. I can't leave town, my business ventures keep me 818 grounded which I'm fine with.
I guess we'll do the last friday of the month of Feb if that works better....

As with anything even quasi-competitive there is a desire to improve your chances of being the fastest even in the world of who's 16" bike is fastest: Spider Man, Hanna Montana, Little Mermaid, Barbie etc. I will say that one can adjust your bike so it fits you as best as it can but swapping out tires and bars, then escalates into hubs and custom built wheels and fearings and 60 dollar ties, and then you're just another gravity racer. I've already been down this road with the soapbox and we have guys out there that have spent 1000's on their cars, I want to avoid that. I want to avoid spending 5 dollars on my bike. Your bike should be something that you're willing to bend in half, throw away, get crunched by the tow van, taken by the cops etc and you have 5 more just like it lined up for the next adventure.
We're looking at the last Friday of Feb, or a Thursday night perhaps? Let me know.

my better judgment is telling me to not do this. I have reasons why that I can explain in person. or I could just post it on look my facebook wall... not.
This really is a great idea and I want to do it. It's just bad timing for me. Sorry dude.
Paved for sure. Of course there are dirt hills we can do as well...Let's try it out and see how it goes from there. Once a month would be cool, this depends on how it's received. Borfo, do your scout missions and report back.
I altering my van roof rack for minibike hauling duties, this is going to be fun!

Your bike must have 16” wheels and must be in a stock configuration. No upgrades except the addition
of a caliper (the shittiest kind) style
brake may be added. No other upgrades or altering of stock equipment including tires may be made to
the bikes. You can of course adjust
your seat/stem/bars/brakes to your liking, not like it will help. We want to avoid an escalation of riders
throwing money into bikes that should
cost no more than ten dollars. Your bike should be a bike that can be easily replaced and will often be
adorned with cartoon characters or
images of pre-teen pop stars, in other words: junk.
You are responsible for lighting, we are going to be doing night runs so good lighting is important.
You are also responsible for your protective gear, helmets are mandatory, and everything else is
encouraged.
We will be going down hill in masse; bike handling skill and a lack of self-preservation are paramount in
this endeavor.
Meeting at 9pm at the intersection of Laurel Canyon and Mulholland. There is parking on adjacent
streets. We roll at 9:30 don't be late. We are going to go down to the west side and end at the light where the
little store is (kirkwood) there you bank to the right for an easy run off. Lots of twists and turns but it's not
very steep so don't expect to go that fast. There are much faster hills but for the first one. best we do
something mellow.

We did some test runs last night and these kids bikes are not going to be fast. Secondly, if you do fall, you fall a much shorter distance than a regular bike.

The secondary reason for this event is to destroy as many of these 16 things as possible. I have a 4x8 sheet of plywood in my backyard that is chest high with these bikes, They need to die...gloriously.
I don't want people to spend real money on this nor have it become too competitive, it ruins the fun. The Portlanders have as usual taken something simple and fun and fucked it all up, I want to avoid that.

wait how does it work. do we all go back up the hill im a van or do we walk all the way up afterwards either way im down. I just asked someone if its more dangerous to to this on a skatebord which i've done many a time and they said it was more dangerous on a skateboard so i have to do this. though i love rev Phil and zoobombs i refuse to go to the land where the young retire
yes im in final tweekings to the mystic are done. Though i do have some questions advice that really asking borfo might not help. would ducktaping pillows to my body help at all.
My cherished zoobomb bike was borrowed. Not sure how long until I get it back. You have a Hanna Montana I can use? Anyone have a beat up motorcycle helmet i can wear?
Fuck it, I'm going to wear the bunny suit.

I'm going to bring in about 4 or 5 of these things and get them going, I'll have loaners if someone need them. Letting me know in advance would be nice however....
rev106 responding to a comment by Joe Borfo
02.21.12 - 6:48 am
I will bring three loaners, they will be rideable but you should bring some tools so you can adjust the seat/bars/stem to your liking. Bring lights, front and rear and a skid lid, I can only provide so much. They are first come first serve. Or you can swing by the shop and pick one up. I will not hold shit for anyone, no.
Did I mention that everyone that completes the rally gets a sticker?
Next month will be moved to the third Friday of the month, meet points TBA. So you have a chance for redemption.

Laurel Canyon? This could be a bloodbath. In Portland they have corkers n medics n stuff and still I saw plenty of broken jaws.
I don't have insurance this month + I'm a pussy.
I suggest Elysian Park for next time. They lock the gates after 10pm. No cars.
Everything you do has some risk to it, driving to work is more perilous than this activity. If you stay in your lane (you should) and use your brakes when you need to you should be fine. Keep in mind it's not a race, you win by completing the activity, not by risking your neck to "beat" someone. I've ridden down much steeper hills on faster bikes and come away clean. I can only imagine that many of you have ridden bikes down hills too, that's all we are doing. The most you'll fall if you do would be the height of your bike which is small. Wear a helmet (mandatory) and armor up as you see fit. I'd say those of you that are afraid have seen too many news programs, perhaps you should stay in your cocoon never to live life. I'm aware of the risks, it's up to the individual to assess these risks. I for one have decided for the cause of fun it's worth it.

I will never forget as borfo was putting the bubble wrap on nicole he says, you know this is just for looks. thanks Paul, there are many hills yet to do. I'm the biggest scardy cat I know and I did it. Thanks everybody for coming out. Haven't had so much fun in months.

Paul, do you have a extra bike for me? Must have the following:
Lite weight carbon fiber frame
100mm travel fork
2x10 gearing with 180mm cranks
Disc brakes
Chris King wheelset aggressive knobby tires and Stan's NoTube
Clipless pedals
Adjustable seatpost
Frame and all parts must match in color
i know ihad to do moving out application crap that night. but i found a good one in montecito heights its a few miles of downhill some parts pretty wicked let me know if you want to test run if it meets bomb sqad standards. probably not for this next one but foe a future one sice you might have already picked it out. In bike oven territory. plus for the fifth one i want to make a stencil so we could have a patch.
It's rev's event but when scouting, correct me if i'm wrong, but the hills should be at least a mile straight downhill...first was laurel canyon, 2nd was griffith park, 3rd, i missed,
I'm gonna scout doheny and other hills in b.h. and hollywood soon..also way up in the palisades highlands, and maybe even silverlake hills....
step up you westside pussies....

Well longer is always better, we can also connect streets together for a longer run. I'd say anything steeper than 8% grade for any length of time would be too steep, sweet ones that are fun but not too scary are 5-6%, yawners 3 %. I want this to grow legs of it's own, so it's not MY event, but OUR event.
Paul.

We will meet on Mulholland Between N. Bevelery Glen and Benedict Canyon road at 8:30 pm Friday the 18th. There is some parking up there. Look for troublemakers on kids bikes.
I will look into your course for the next one...

Hmmm. Tuesday on Xmas? ... How about 4:30pm? While the sun is still up a little bit. We can do a bunch of runs into the night. Epic metal music on my sound trailer...
Just as we started the first descent there was a loud SNAP! Somebody's chain broke off right next to me. The chain just fell to the street as he still rode on. He shrugged it off like it was nothing and kept rolling with no more coaster brake.
The Bomb Squad. September 23rd 8:30 PM
Meet at the Griffith Park Driving Range. 8:30 pm Bring very bright lights, it will be dark. We will be running both sides of
Griffith Park Drive.

Meet at Starbucks on the corner of Ventura and Topanga Canyon.
We will be going down the Valley side of New Topanga. Looks a lot more scary than it is.
You're missing out on the fun. I know a lot of you look tough, but are you tough on the inside? Tough enough to take a Hanna Montana bike down a twisty road?

The Bomb Squad.
Starbucks 8pm November 16th
11850 Balboa Boulevard
Granada Hills, CA
This will be a long drag style run, great for your first time as there are minimal turns.
Also, I'm calling out all other groups, the MOM riders, the polo players, The angelopes. You have not come to run with us, you are a bunch of pussies or what. We are throwing down the gauntlet, put down your weed and beer and grab that Hanna Montana bike in the corner, it yearns to be raced!
Friday December 21st. Note Earlier Start time of 7:30 pm!! We have to be back to the start before 9pm so gather at 7:30 and we leave promptly at 8 pm.
We will meet at the top of Mulholland and Encino Hills drive. Course is almost 2 1/2 miles long with a dirt start and 90% paved the rest of the way. Last race of the season. Bring bright lights, helmet and some leather.
Ok bitches. You think that you are hard. You may have some cool tattoos or some interesting facial hair or have lots of not real friends on face book, but let's face the facts: If you have not done bomb squad yet you are a pussy. All you little bike crews out there spend way too much time maxing your mustaches or sticking another patch on your vests, it means nothing. Taking a Hanna Montana bike and pointing it down hill in the dark of night, this means something. So, let's see what LA has to offer, any takers? Afraid? The first hills are easy, you'll have to stop texting for a few moments but for once, you'll feel alive. We dare you.
Feb 15th
Griffith Park Drive, meet at driving range 8pm gather, 9pm depart.
