Yeah the best time to go up there is probably before it gets hot like KiMS1 was saying in the other thread. I think we could do a nice spring time ride.

I figured there would be climbing involved. I'm more worried about the roads and what kind of shoulder and room there is for bikes.

"I'm more worried about the roads and what kind of shoulder and room there is for bikes."

It's a beat up old ranch road with little to no traffic. You can also go mtn bike style up Devil's Creek and pop out above the silo.

I ain't finding this Devil's Creek Greg.

Zoom out a little, switch to hybrid view so you can see the roads and stuff, and you'll see that Devil's Cyn, it's labelled right above the 118, is just to the west of the road that goes to the silo.

I see. The route you are suggesting goes on a ridge right? This one here, http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2478968

There is an old nike missle base in the hills above Rowland Heights.
Hey, Daylo, I know a route up there.
We should do this on a coffee Wednesday ride.
We'll have to go over Fullerton Road into La Habra/Brea to get into the access road.
Good climbing to get to the top.
Not so good fixed.

"The route you are suggesting goes on a ridge right?"

No, that would be the hardest route. I can't make gmap go in the canyon, but it's still the dark green to the west of your route. The canyon is pretty mellow until you have to pop up to the site.

toweliesbong

Apparently there's something in the canyon that lets me map with google.

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2479045

I think what you're saying is that after mile 1 marker, you stay to the left in the canyon? Google won't let me go there. Following in the canyon you then come around and loop in a clockwise direction into the silo site?

Speaking of missile silos and such, what's the deal with the nike outpost up on top of Mandeville Canyon? I was thinking of checking that out at some point, but since it's in an area with more traffic, I figured it would probably be pretty lame.

You mean this one off Dirt Mulholland? It's not all that exciting.

Nikes weren't particularly big missiles, so they didn't need big old silos like the ICBMs, etc., so it's kinda like a concrete patio surrounded by barbed wire.

I'd rather see a "Battle of Los Angeles" ride to commemorate the time L.A. went to war with UFOs.

But the towers are still there, or at least the last time I rode up they were, and you get great views of the valley and city. We used to ride up on 4th of July and watch 10 to 12 different fireworks displays.

toweliesbong
01.8.09 - 10:55 pm

Allan, that's closer to what I'm talking about, but you'd probably go up canyon more until you hit the ranch road, and then come back to the silo site.

@JB

According to the wiki-entry, Nike's were basically the precursor to anti-aircraft pieces like those Patriots mounted on the back of Humvees.

You want to see some real missile silos, I heard there were plenty of old ones in the Mid-West that housed the likes of the Titan and Minuteman missiles.

Whether or not it's actually safe, or legal to enter them is another story.

Alot of them are either;

-Non-active, but still on USAF-property.
-After deactivation, the land was released back to the lease-holder of the acreage.
-Owned by another government agency, state, local, or federal.

Then there's the threat of lingering, radioactive residue.

All that shit aside, these things seem like an adventure worth taking on.

The old Nike base at Mandeville Cyn & Mulholland is LA96C. It's a cold war memorial park and they lock up after dark. It's a better hike than a bike ride anyway, unless you're going to head down dirt mullholland.

Better that than a tract-housing development.

the road is basically a horse/hiking trail.

iits craggly broken asphalt. i tried riding up with my geared bike awhile back and first off, its steep as shit, second, there are SO MANY POTHOLES/CRACKS/ROAD APPLES that going downhill would be a very fast and bumpy ride.

if you had an awesome mtb and even more awesome calves, then you would like this.

if you have skinny tires, dont even think about it unless you plan on walking ur bike down after the climb.

as for the silo,

yeah, its a locked up gate when you get to the top.

BUT

its also a really easy gate to climb. theres like guard rails and all types of other shit you can use to step off of.

im sure you're not allowed in there but i havent been bothered yet.

the place is actually really cool to go at night, its spooky as fuck bc theres all these mannequins the police used to for target practice so it looks like theres limbs strewn about every where.

as far as the weather/seasons, yeah, during summer, it SUCKS. i mean you all know how hot the valley gets and being up there during summer, its all windy, dry as hell, dusty, etc.

winter and spring or after a really nice rain is pretty sweet.

it smells all planty and the hills get super green and red with new grass and flowers.

that place is amazing for hikes. theres a bunch of trails around that area and you can switch back it to like everywhere.

oh and bring water. and lots of it.

KiMS1,

Where the target practice is is where the cop cars are? And I guess there's tunnels and stuff to go exploring in? Or buildings? Which way did you take to go up there? Also I was thinking MTB for the trip, not road bikes.

User1

@ user1

from what i can tell by the OLD ass cop cars, i think they used to do target practice there in the 80s.

theres like 15 cruisers just hacked to shit with bullets, casings everywhere, mannequins blown to pieces. its not in one specific place, but just everywhere. ummm, oh and alot of the buildings and bungalows are also bullet riddled, and i think they may have done like army training for the middle east bc theres a lot of arabic writing spray painted and stenciled on the walls.
its kinda hard to explain the place..

the stuff to explore,

well the spot is located in some really nice hills, so you can start there,

the silo consists of a bunch of bombed out buildings and the buildings hold furniture and just random shit people used. ive found briefcases with random government files in them. nothing important, just like receipts for random things.

the silo itself is pretty cool to explore.

it goes fairly deep underground. the stairwells are open to go downstairs and what not. bring a flash light though bc it gets darker the farther you go down. i personally never went to the very bottom bc its too creepy. the combination of complete darkness, bats, animals, and blown apart mannequins and coming across all these things with a dim flashlight freaked me out. so if you wanna freak urself out, go down as far as you can.

just follow the gmap route, jump the fence and thers like a long stairway covered in brush that leads you down to the silos.

oh and yes, bring ur MTB. if you can go from the bottom to the top, i will give you a 100 banana bucks. its a serious climb.

@user1

6 million banana bucks to get to the bottom of the silo and back with proof.

im telling you, its pretty frightening down there.

i think i went down about 2 floors in the dark with a shitty flashlight, idk if it stops there but i think theres at least 3 or 4 more floors.

the reasons i stopped after 2 floors:

1. it was around midnight so it was already dark and crazy.

2. goddamn bats flying around/ living/ making noise. itd be dead silent, then you'll hear some bats or whatever animal eating and crunching on bugs or something. or sometimes you come into a tight corner and teh bats and spooked and start flying all over the place. i swear my heart was bout to explode.

3. for some reason, the mannequins that were shot at look like zombies in the dark when you quickly flash a light at them. like, its pitch black dark and all you see is whatever ur flashlight can light. i was walking around and the light passed over what looked like a standing body with jagged limbs and what not. but all it really is is a mannequin.

4. the mannequins are placed in the worst spot imaginable. like right around corners or peaking out from behind machines and console boxes. btw, i dunno why there are so many mannequins.

5. i was REALLY baked.
