But yet we wonder why car drivers dislike us. I mean we are quick to reference cvc 21200-21212 when it's to our advantage (ie. the right to take up an entire lane) but taking reds is not only irresponsible and dangerous but also very hypocritical of us.

Personally, unless I'm on a huge ride I refrain from such blatant disregard for both the law and above all my safety and would urge everyone to do the same. Otherwise, we'll continue seeing "cyclist killed..."

i usually make a right turn, pull a u turn and make a right to get back on the street i was on. it takes a little more time, but it's legal. i'll also run a red if the sensor is malfunctioning.

This guy iis definitely ballsy... but at least gives a good idea on anticipating intersections...there's times when rides spread out and gets really thin crossing intersections. I'll yell out,."Call it!!" and it's good that there are those that pay attn but i've seen ppl just go right through a red w/o looking. With cars waiting in the intersections...the cars give others cars behind it a reason to stop... but with a wide open intersection and that single set of headlights approaching... it can get scary.

Bravo for this dude making this video. Some ridazz dig doing this. If there's an accident, then it's the rida that more than likely pays the heavy price. Goes with the territory.

A couple of things he didn't point out cause it wasn't shown in his example was when the light just turned red for him. If there was more than one crossing lane, you got to pay close attention to the lane that doesn't have a car sitting in that lane. That lane could could have a car moving into the intersection that maybe obscured by the cars still stopped.

Another thing he should have time to do, is look the other way on the one way streets he's crossing for any wrong way drivers, or even police cars.

Must be nice doing this with cars going 25 or so mph.

That's a very informative video. I can't believe he can get through traffic like that. I'd like to see him bust that on a big intersection like Santa Monica and Westwood (I don't doubt that he could).

you can turn right on a red in california unless there's a no right turn on red sign or light. you just have to yield to cross-traffic.

you are prohibited from making a u-turn in a commercial area, in which case, i generally wait at the light.

I believe what RBI was going for was that you must make a complete stop at the red. Then, and if it's safe, you may proceed to turn.

Personally I don't mind waiting.

That, and I can't afford another red light ticket.

Can we say ASTRONOMICAL/EXORBITANT FINES? (I love both those words)

if youre impatient and you run reds then you are no better than the cars at the back of the pack honking and acting stupid because the cyclists in front of them are going to make their commute 30 seconds longer than normal.

The rationale of it being healthier to run reds so as to avoid ingesting the "toxic soup" being spewed from the idling vehicles is a contrived argument. Why not advocate jumping them because it reduces exposure to harmful UV rays?

But then I'm one of them pansies that will ever err on the side of caution and responsibility. Pretty much I have to be the only lonely soul at an intersection, and even then will run a red only after coming to a complete halt.

Stop signs I'll roll (with caution), but reds I respect.

the way i see it, rolling around a red is more courteous to the drivers behind me because it allows me to put space between us, and usually to get away from them completely.

point well taken about being a bad example, which is why i only run reds outright when the intersection is completely clear. but i think there's a definite difference between rolling around the red and running through it.

i don't make it a habit of running reds but i admit to doing so, although rarely, when i'm running late for work. i've never blown through a light, but rather stop and proceed with caution. it's a habit i'm straying from because it's unsafe and portrays cyclists in a negative light.

FUCK YES. this video rules. I swear I've come the exact same conclusions about techniques for running lights. I totally agree about the right hand lane and using all the available lanes.

you have to be really smart about running reds and not take stupid risks. that said, I have a couple techniques I could add to this series that would deal with higher speed red light running. If I wasnt so lazy I would make a vid and post it.
