BIKE NIGHT at LADWP Holiday Light Festival
Thread started by eddieboyinla at 11.24.08 - 6:17 am

Kick-Off Preview Bike Night

Monday, November 24, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m..

A preview Bike Night will be held for experienced and novice riders to come and enjoy the festival in a vehicle free activity just for bike riders.

Each year this holiday tradition of magnificent displays showcasing over a million lights along a one-mile segment of Crystal Springs Drive attracts more than half million visitors each year.

This festival symbolizes LADWP’s proud history and shared legacy of service to the people of the city. It is also made possible through the generous support of the Los Angeles Visitors and Convention Bureau (LA Inc.), the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, the Los Angeles Zoo, the Los Angeles World Airports, Autry National Center, Automobile Club of Southern California and CalTrans.

Just so you know, this is the only night that bikes are allowed in LADWP Festival of lights.

So if you want to see it on your bike, the only night you are allowed to do it is tonight.

Yeah, every year we go through this same BS with the "Token Bike Night" - this is what, the 3rd year now?.

The reality is that they could easily make this thing car-free if they wanted to and there is ample evidence that a large proportion of the community would support that decision.

Instead, Tom LaBonge wants you to be grateful for the crumbs from the table.

the road through griffith park isnt really public road. if that were the case, then they wouldnt close off part of it with gates at 10pm every night.

Actually tyler, Crystal Springs Dr. is a public road. it just has limited access... which does not discount it from being a public road, from which it is illegal without a freeway type designation to bar bicycles, they do it anyway, and we ignore this ban, and ride it as we always do...

yeah, this is why the cops don't give a shit when they see you on a bike on CSdr in the middle of the night, it's mostly a traffic control measure to keep people from using it as a raceway. they gate many of the public mountain roads on this end of the county too, much of it has to do with dumbasses in cars who think empty roads are an excuse to use them as a drag strip.

well, ive never seen a cop or a ranger or whatever on that stretch between los feliz and victory at any time of night. i always thought it was public/private because its going through a state park.

If what you say is true Chynna, that represents some progress, at least. I notice in the link when they say "vehicles" they really mean "motor vehicles", right? As we all know, a bicycle IS a vehicle.

On another note, I have rolled through that part of Griffith Park many times after 10pm (both in groups and solo) and haven't been hassled about it. I actually got there one night just as the guy was closing the gate and he was very cool about it; pretty much confirmed what Fuzz (I think) said: that the intention is to keep cars out. It is somewhat creepy/scary/magical rolling through there alone in the dark.

Last night was Bike Night at the Griffith Park Festival of Lights.

Cyclists are now verboten!

Banned from the vehicle-free nights and Banned from the vehicle nights.

No mas!

Equestrians ride, there are even accommodations for dog-walkers on the ped nights (yay for dog-sleds!) but there cyclists are not welcome.

That's why we ride on December 8th, the opening of the Vehicle nights!

shauners... you can still ride your bike down there. they're going to be allowing it for the next 6 days or so. me and chynna asked the workers there and that is the info they gave us, indicating it's because a lot of people are leaning towards going green.

there weren't that many riders that night, it's going to be mostly a family type setting, with little kids running on around on foot and on bikes.

for those of us that get "thirsty" i do not recommend you do any heavy drinking as you could endanger little kids and yourselves.
