It seems that we are hearing about a cyclist being killed or injured regularly. It is scary! I have noticed over the years that i have more negative interactions with motorist during the summer time than the winter. Maybe because of the heat, there being more of us out there, what ever it is, just be careful out there. A few weeks back some crazy Asses in a truck hated on a group of us. To the extent of them throw swings at us from their passing truck, and squirting some green gunk on me. Be alert, and some times being the Bigger Woman (Man) is the safer beat...hopefully karma will take care of those asses in one way or another.

That is right near the El Monte Station where the CICLE Ride leaves tomorrow morning!

Farmer Eddie at the community garden happened to drive by the scene. He saw the cyclist...covered with a tarp.

This is sad news...

Ah, crap. Poor guy.

Why does the article make a point to state he wasn't in the crosswalk? He's a bicyclist. He doesn't need to be.

more detail here: http://www.sgvtribune.com/ci_9359538

EL MONTE - A bicyclist was killed on Friday morning after he collided with a Foothill Transit bus.

The bus was headed north on Santa Anita Avenue. The accident occurred somewhere between Ramona Boulevard and Valley Boulevard, according to Foothill Transit spokeswoman Felicia Friesema.

She added that after hitting the left side of the bus, the bicyclist likely went under the bus and was run over. The accident happened just after 9 a.m., she said.

The victim, a male Asian, aged 60-65, was pronounced dead at the scene around 9:15 a.m., said Lt. Michelle States of the El Monte Police Department.

She said that the accident occurred when the bicyclist was crossing the street. The bus was traveling between 5 mph and 15 mph in moderate traffic, she said. No other cars were involved in the accident.

The biker was crossing at an area where there is no crosswalk, States added.

"It would appear that based on our preliminary investigation, the biker was at fault," said States.

She added that at this point police do not have any idea who the bicyclist is, since he was not carrying identification while on his ride.

Is it me or does someone need to take a physics class? I mean... WHAT?

neverclever - agreed - how does one end up under the bus after hitting the side of it? I can't really figure a way that could happen without like a black hole or a hurricane or something.

markedge - I think they're trying to imply he was crossing the street where the bus wasn't looking or something.

Yeah I'm reading it more and I guess from 12:30 he struck the bus.

Then through thorough investigation they figured out that in fact the bus hit the cyclist at 2:38 with the LA-Times article.

Sounds like someone was trying to lie to the polize!

i saw this on tv at like 9-10 am and they had an areal shot of it on TV,

sounds like Foothill Transit is trying to cover it's ass,

from what i remember the bus had crossed an intersection and there was a tarp over to the left of the bus,

Is it just that we are noticing more accidents or are there more of them occuring?

I can't remember where I saw it exactly, I thought it was MTA buses, but I could be wrong.

The bus company was bragging about this piece that was put on the side of the bus in front of the wheels at about a 30 degree angle so, if the bus was to catch someone under the bus, it would push the person out of the way of the wheel, out from under the bus, so not to crush the person.

I can't remember where I saw this exactly

I'm really sad to hear about this. But yeah -- I don't get the physics of it either.

blackout_blacklung, It does seem like there are more accidents, but we say that every month or so. I figure LA's going through a biking growth spurt. The city/infrastructure/car traffic doesn't yet know how to deal with the increase. What's the easy way to teach people? This hard way, ... it's no good.

Man killed by bus identified
From staff reports
Article Launched: 05/25/2008 01:03:33 PM PDT

EL MONTE - Officials released the name of a 73-year-old El Monte man who was struck and killed by a Foothill Transit Bus Friday.

Quanhai Mao died at the scene of the crash from blunt injuries, said Los Angeles County Department of Coroner Lt. Cheryl MacWillie.

The crash occurred about 9:15 a.m. on Santa Anita Avenue between Ramona and Valley boulevards, officials said.

Mao was crossing east across Santa Anita Avenue when he was struck, said El Monte police Lt. Michelle States.

The bus was travelling between 5 and 15 mph, she said.

States said the preliminary investigation indicated Mao was at fault in the collision.

Stephen made a bunch of calls and posted about this on LAist ( http://laist.com/2008/05/27/cyclist_dies_in.php )

It was bizarre listening into the conversations. They all have different stories to tell and nobody seems to see the story of a human perspective.

oh yeah, and has anyone heard anything more about this?

Something about it being a Foothill Transit bus doesnt suprise me though. They were the only bus company in LA county not to offer free rides to cyclists on Bike to Work Day, and it's the only bus company where I have seen a once an hour bus skip a stop with several people at it just because the driver didn't feel like waiting 10 seconds for one of thise people to put a bike on the rack.

FuzzBeast

The most alarming element of the whole "investigation" is the fact that the Foothill Transit have not turned the video over to the El Monte Police Department but are waiting for a court order.

Confirmation that Foothill Transit's first priority is loss prevention, not safety.
