It's on like Donkey Kong!!!!!
Posting for the ride...............
Ah yes, the rains have come and gone! The Evening News prophecies of snarled traffic, neighborhood engulfing puddles, drenched poodles has failed to rain down upon us, yet RIDE-Arc rides on into the New Year.
River me this, river me that: When is a river not a river?
In a city that thrives on a large industry built upon cosmetic surgery, redefinition of appearance, and publicity agents that can turn the shambles of your career into a highly rated tear-wrenching story of personal strength on Oprah, the Los Angeles river is perfectly at home as a "river."
Join us as we figure out the esoteric resume of the LA River that reads like a website's meta tags (or the random mindless bantering of a director at a particular local school of design):
Industrial, Flood, Bizarre Curiosity
Megalopolis, Infrastructure, Mundane Opacities
Structure, Geology, Vast urbanization
Metallurgical contexts, Dwelling ephemera
Drainage, Ominous, Quiescent River, Renegade river
Historical metaphor, Conditional Presence
Killing people, destroying livestock.
Dancing gestural monoliths, Societal Questioning
A plaque for the city, a plague for the ocean
Hundreds of debris basins, Secondary dams, specially constructed acts
Culverts, levees, Portland Raw
Kayaks optional.
And to think, it may actually be possible to build a home from the amount of metal contaminants within the river. Who knew?
RIDE-Info - The ride will be at around 20 miles, however we are working out the details & route on tonight's famed "Test Ride of Legends!" It will be mostly flat, however you should know that there is a very long uphill climb of about .2 degrees. Yes, that's a .05% grade. Quality Tour de France stuff there, folks.
Weather - Expect the ride temperatures to be in the 50's (Fahrenheit). Gloves recommended, something to keep warm... Seriously though? Be thankful you don't live in Winnipeg.
**** THE MEETING PLACE FOR THIS RIDE IS IN CHINATOWN!!! PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!! ****
Location Map: http://tinyurl.com/nfq8e/
We will be meeting in the little 'square/plaza' in Chinatown, in just steps away from the Mountain Bar.
There is plenty of parking in the area if you're driving to it.
No car? Take the redline to Union Station -> head north on Alameda, left on Alpine, Right on Broadway, look for the 'traditional' props on your left hand side.
We meet up between 9 and 9:30, we try to head out around 9:30 pm.

NEWB, Steve is referencing L.A.'s GOD OF BRIDGES. The esteemed Mr. Butler designed seven of the 10 bridges that span the L.A. River between Washington Boulevard and North Broadway. Now ya know!

The ride was awesome. The education was awesome.
And a huge middle finger to those assholes (you know who you are) who refused to stop talking every time Joe and Alex started talking. And then you had the nerve to say you came out to ride, not talk? What the fuck? You had to choose the one ride that was centered around people talking to a quiet crowd. Morons.

Yeah... this RIDE-Arc was freaking awesome... I've never been on the other side of the river and going into Pacific Railroad's yard was dope too. Shiet... I've never ridden Arroyo Seco and man... I turned music off and enjoyed the sound of the water... more than the L.A. River since you're so much closer to the water. Great job once again...
The talking does suck... I heard when someone shouted out to quiet down... but the funny part was... I didn't at first understand what that person was shouting cause all heard was people talking...

Yeah, I just wanna double up on that comment and say that Ride-Arc is the one ride where you should shut up. You don't have to listen, just be quiet and respect the architect. Otherwise you're not only offending Alex, but you're offending me too. And I'm tall.

Yeah this ride ROXCKED!!
Awesome route and great lecture. The few people talking were a pain, fortunately this was dealt with by others. I definitely want to go on that Arroyo Seco section again! Alex always does a great job putting the ride together. This one had a little something extra since it was coming back from the break. I have a feeling alot of ridazz were dropped because of the speed of the ride though. We started with about 300 and finished with maybe 75.

It took us over 3 hours to cover 20 miles. The ride was not too fast for anybody. Some may have fallen behind, but I observed riders turning off at several points. Perhaps they got bored or had some other place to go to.
There were also a number of flats and they may have not been able to find us again although other riders stopped to assist (yeah!).
The red blinkies were easy to follow when the pace did pick up on the long down hill.
At any rate the ride was fun, informative and a comfortable pace for my first time Ride Arc better half on the stoker seat of our heavy tandem. She dug the night ride and wants to do another.
Probably not the Dark Century.

So how would that differ from any other ride? I saw others turning off because they were trying to make metro connections.
Personally, I liked it when Alex said no boom-boxes please. It was really nice to ride along the river and actually hear the river without having to put up with listening to someone else's musical tastes.

Just wanted to thank everyone for a fun ride (albeit short and bumpy for me). Thanks Gary, Brad, Allen, etc. for hanging with me while i changed one tube and proceeded to get another pinch flat and rode to Bike Oven on my tire and rim.
Will definitely be back next month with my friends (there first ride-arc) and will hang closer to Alex and speaker to hear better.
