I just got back from the beach and decided to hit up city hall to check out this so-called bike license. Apparently, i'm the 2nd person to get one in the past year. total cost: 2 bucks. The clerk looked perplexed and stumbled around a bit to find the paperwork and several minutes later he tries explaining where to put the stickers...
"...ummm where the seat goes...that...pole thingy..."
yeah...so I thought this was a pretty shady ass requirement from Santa Monica when the clerk didn't even know wtf was going on...
would you get a license if it meant that you might have less hassle from SMPD?
reply
you should make fakes and sell them at SMCM for $1. dont tell anyone i said that.

I've registered two bicycles with Santa Monica City Hall and went with a friend this year to register his (Probably the guy he told you about)
Aside from the possible harassments from SMDP regarding licenses, as to what I'm aware of, one person was asked about their license status at the first SMCM crack down... My bicycle was stolen in Santa Monica on a Sunday and was returned to me on a Tuesday thanks to the license.
Worth it for me.

Don't do it. We want to be able to argue that the license law is archaic and rarely enforced, and that nobody really has a license. If people start panicking and getting licenses, there goes that argument.

its probably too late now, but if it isnt, dont put the license on your seat post thingy. put it on the bottom of your bottom bracket shell thingy.

also take a dremel and engrave your drivers license number next to the serial number of your frame.

Also - tattoo your Social Security Number on your dog.
That's what my friend's friend's dad did. He also named 3 or 4 of his sons Wayne. His name is Wayne. Smart guy, ahead of his time.

when i got my red ticket the guy took all the info off my bike ... serial# .... i feel free when i ride free does not imply tolls or fees.
do i need a walking license too? municipalities are always looking to gain revenue(parking meters on sunset) look at the independent cities around L.A.. ...so the next time you see mr. fatmeterman giving some persons vehicle a ticket, remember he can only do so
because of those two plates and that pesky v.i.n.
50 % of what you earn like it or not is taxed. no bike tax.

are you suggesting that not having your bike registered means you cant get a ticket?

Someone told me that they had put a their business card inside the seat post and one folded away in the rims... When their bicycle was stolen, a quick release of the seat post revealed the business card and their bicycle was returned.

Well, I've never found any of my 3 or so stolen bikes, registered or not. But if there's one thing that karma is attached to, it's bike theft. If everyone was brought up to believe in karma, then we wouldn't need bike licenses.
Put that $2 towards a can of mace! (right, b-Shrimp?)

had an interesting conversation with a detective from SMPD. He came by yesterday to show me pictures of the guy (in a 'line up') who clobbered me outside Bikerowave I had to ID him. Anyway before that we talked about many subjects - I'm good at that!!...and I brought up SMCM....when I see you all I'll tell you the details.interesting!
BIke licences just could get a stolen bike back!!!
