Lorrane'(I'm not sure of the correct spelling of her name) aka L' Orange posted a myspace bulletin about a friend who got hit on Sunday morning by a car, while riding her bike without a helmet.
Do or don't wear a helmet, the choice is your, but her story gives you something to consider.

Sorry to hear about your friend L"Orange, she is in my thoughts

Wear one. A friend of mine just got married with a huge scar on his face from falling without a helmet.

That sucks. Beautiful girl too. I get annoyed seeing so many bikers riding without helmets. There's no other reason for it than they think they look dorky with a helmet. It's a senseless risk to take.
Best wishes for her full recovery.

And for those who think they don't ride fast enough to warrant a helmet, you should know that a 5mph impact of your skull against a hard surface is enough to kill you, or even worse, puree your brain when it slams against the inside of your skull, leaving you alive but incompetent. A helmet is such simple, cheap, and effective insurance.

Performance bicycle in Santa Monica and Pasadena have Bell and Giro helmets on sale, in various styles, between $20 and $30. I was just there earlier. These helmets are built according to the same safety standards as the $120 helmets.
Now I am not going to say that a helmet is going to save your life, but like a flak jacket or a bullet- proof vest, it reduces the risk of injury.
Out of the 750 bicyclists who die every year in the US from accidents, the majority are due to traumatic head injuries, mainly because the rider was not wearing a helmet.
It is still safer to ride a bicycle, nearly 40,000 people die every year in automobile accidents. So if you choose to wear a helmet, you will statistically increase your odds of survival in a crash.

I don't think a helmet will help in most situations, since we tend to fall on our shoulders. But accidents are a freak thing to begin with, so that's why I wear one. Also, I find that a helmet with good vents will actually be cooler temperature-wise because of the way they channel air.
Nashbar usually has crazy closeout prices on lids. I have a Bell Citi that I got for $20, total fred commuter helmet. Or you can be PRO Core Elite and spend the money for Rudy Project or whatever.

I am finally rocking a helmet. Got it on Tuesday. I picked up a Bell "Citi" helmet from Helen's Cycles.
The "Citi" has a lot less frills, fins, and no crazy spikes in the back. It is a much cleaner looking helmet. I am still on the lookout for cooler looking helmets, but this one is my favorite so far.

I guess I'll have to say what everyone is thinking......
HOLY COW, THAT CHICK IS HOT TOO!
I mean, when this sort of thing happens to ugly people ... eh. (shrug)
But when it's a hot chick, this is tragic! Ugly people shouldn't breed. They need to get the crippling head injuries. Not super hot babes! She needs to be out there laughing and flirting and having freakazoid monkey sex! Not being catatonic in a hospital bed. Damn. That sucks.
Remember WHY you should wear a helmet - so you maintain a reason to wear a condom!

Maybe there can be a helmet decorating day to encourage helmet wearing! Helmets are totally dorky in a good way, so why not embrace it? I painted mine because I like to like the things I wear and I dont really like regular helmets. Now I love wearing my helmet! We should all love out helmets. So if the reason people dont wear them is to be cool then there must be a day to make cool helmets!
Crap. It looks like I just gave myself work to do. I think I will start this "make a cool helmet day" some time soon because the more people like their helmets, the more they want to wear them. yea yea! and the more people wear them, the less of these unfortunate stories we will hear of.

I just wiped out tonight while I was with CubCamp. Luckily no serious damage and no injuries to the head. I am definitely wearing my helmet from now on.

"...even worse, puree your brain when it slams against the inside of your skull..."
I'm not arguing against helmets, but this statement had me wondering -- how does a helmet prevent your brain from smashing into your skull? Unless it's inserted between brain and skull (an expensive and painful procedure, I'm sure), then I think you're SOL if this happens.

The takeaway lesson here: if I get a huge scar on my face from falling without a helmet, chicks will want to marry me!
