@Alex Thompson
Reagan, another Illinois-born, jackass who tried to take California all for hims.....
Nevermind, that makes me a hippocrat.

Some dude on the Mother of All Rides and myself coined the term "hippiecrite" for people who drive SUVs and complain about littering.
Though littering is bad.
But so is driving an SUV for a trip to the supermarket. I mean, dude, how much groceries do you need?
Is being a hippiecrite kind of like being a hypocrat? I think maybe there's some crossover.
katiepoche03.27.08 - 7:45 pm

@katiepoche
-Depends on how you judge that persons use of the vehicle they're driving.
I used to be judgmental for a short-time, in regards to that, but then I mellowed down.
Perhaps they truly are, passionate for the environment and only put about 4 trips into that SUV a month.
You probably just happened to catch them at that time of the month where they had to make that quota-making trip in the SUV.
As far as myself being a hippocrat, I was born in Illinois like Reagan, and like him, I fool everyone into thinking I was born and bred here.

bentstrider:
Maybe, I can see that. Maybe they own a big car in order to stock up on all their groceries for the month. Or to take out all their recycling once a month, if they don't have recycling in their building (as I don't -- the pile grows).
As it turns out, I wasn't there and therefore didn't see the woman or the contents of her car. I just had the story related to me and made up a word about it. It's what I do.

-Just as long as one continually looks as at a car as a tool, then that's cool.
I tend to frown upon those that spend more than they earn each year just to make the vehicle sound louder, or look shinier.
Hell, if I ever do plan to own a truck or something, I'm going to go the Mennonite-route and make the thing as plain-looking as can be.

bentstrider:
I hear it. I own a car. I bought one when I moved here, on the advice of everyone I knew who had lived in Los Angeles. They told me I was crazy to even think about not buying a car. But yes -- it was a VERY useful tool for finding an apartment, for getting furniture, for getting boxes of books from my parents' house. Now my use for it wanes, and I'll be happy when I own my car outright and can then sell it.
The word-play about the lady with the SUV was just that: playing with words. I mentioned it here because it seemed like there was more wordplay bubbling up around the word "hypocrite." I was just being funny, but perhaps I wasn't being funny enough. I'll try harder next time.

I thought you were throwing around something serious there for a minute, oh well, you tried and those that just perused will come to their own conclusions.
I saw it as serious due to the fact that the "customizers" and "tuners" I mentioned seem to have a stronger foothold up here, than they seem to have down there.
Hell, most of the kids that go the high-schools/community college up here seem to eat, sleep and breathe some type of motorsport.
I still think it's kinda sad that most of the BMX tricksters I used to know have all grown beer-guts and prefer spin-outs instead of spinnin' in the air.

An SUV w/ a "War is not the answer" sticker turned right from the leftmost lane at Westwood and LeConte. Cutting off not only My Greatness in the middle lane, but also a bus in the right lane. All I could do is smile.
Tomato - Thx for posting it on facebook!

A co-worker of mine who recently started biking in to work (YEAH!) was biking past Windward Circle last night, saw you guys riding around the circle, and joined you for a couple laps. She poaches pelotons regularly, just to be funny, and she wondered who this crazy mob was. (It's not as funny when the peloton you're crashing isn't all decked out in spandex ... but maybe more fun?)
I'm hoping she starts riding VCM for real.

I just got my girlfriend who lives in Ohio a bike for her birthday, and she will be here this weekend! :) I'm hoping to make it out to the Venice Critical Mass and give her a proper introduction to the scene!
Who here is going to VCM instead of LACM this month?
jonnyboy04.22.08 - 10:36 pm

i can't because of coachella. last month there were about 15 people i think..pretty small so hopefully there's a better turnout this time around. have fun and take pics!
tomato04.22.08 - 10:43 pm

Thanks! I will definitely take pictures regardless of what the plan evolves into.
Sorry that you won't be able to make it this weekend, have fun at coachella!

Not sure what others are doing, but I'm going LACM. Never done it before.
Was it deliberate that VCM was this night? Or just accidental bad timing. I also see there's a Westwood CM. Not sure if it's a good idea to have three CM rides all splintered in one night, IMHO.

Critical Mass, all over the world, is traditionally held on the last Friday of the month, at rush hour. It just so happens that LA is so big, and has so many communities that want to participate in Critical Mass (YAY!), that they all then happen on the same night. Santa Monica Critical Mass diverges from tradition.
katiepoche04.23.08 - 11:29 am
reply
Yes it was deliberately deliberate. We are that cocky. and we will have Parking Lot Soccer. Beat that LACM.

I would goto VCM but LAMC is just a few blocks from where I stay so it works out better for me. Hope to see everyone out there!

i live right by the windward circle but if the turnout is going to be weak, i may as well trek to LACM.

The soccer ball (and volley ball) was a good idea. That was fun.
Ken C.04.26.08 - 10:33 am

Yes, it was. And whatever you call that thing, where you swing, from ring to ring. Over sand.
katiepoche04.26.08 - 10:52 am
reply
The Santa Monica Rings? That's what I hear the locals call them.
Last night's VCM was ridiculously sports-oriented. I almost feel like we should have an Olympics Ride of some sort. Obstacle course in the sand, monkeying around on the rings, parking lot soccer atop the Westwood Medical Center lot.
In the spirit of the 2008 Olympics we should challenge the LACM folks to some sort of... challenge

Are we going to play soccer again? Is there a Westwood Critical Mass preceding this? So many questions.

I only count two! I think you're doing okay.
As for the question about soccer games, bring a soccer ball and remove all doubt.
