as well, but then again, what already isn't.
State parks
So, the real question will be, will these parks just be un-manned?
Or, will there still be staff there for the mere purpose of keeping people out?

If anything, cops and firefighters should have a limited, starting salary in the range of $20,000-$30,000/year.
However, those with AA's and higher degrees could be afforded the current salary structure they're at right now as gratitude for the efforts they put forth in getting educated first.
But, back to the parks system, it's a heavy disservice to all of us when a vital form of recreation, at all levels, is given a back-seat when it comes to funding considerations.
Being a park-ranger is a kick ass job that's worth the education required, but with shrunken budgets, those hopes are somewhat limited.
Eh, I could always relocate to Texas and become a game-warden.
Kick some armadillo poachers ass.

This was the same argument I was trying to address the City Council about if they got rid of the bicycle division in their budget cuts. Sadly never got to that point in the 60 seconds alloted.
Cutting state workers' hours would go alot further in solving the states budget crisis than this.

i don't see why getting a better education deserves more pay if it doesn't make them better at doing their job.
also. firefighters spend very little of their time fighting fires
they spend most of their time responding to calls from old peoples' homes and drive their massive trucks that are wasteful. you don't need to drive a 10 ton behemoth like a maniac around the street because some old person wants someone to tell them they are still alive.
you would be surprised how much officers can make. my old neighbor was a cop, his wife doesn't work, he runs his a/c unit 24/7, owns a new truck and suv and rv, bought a house and just spends money like nothing. cops can pretty much work as much overtime as they want and make way more than their salary. but whatever, i don't care that much.

I was only suggesting better pay to off-set the cost and time of getting the degree.
I mean, I'm still under the belief that a little more education would go a long way in making sure a law-enforcement officer makes good decisions on the job.
Not to mention if I ever needed a lawyer, I'd prefer one with past military or LEO experience over someone who kept their suit clean.
As far as overtime goes, that's one of the reasons I'm taking cautious steps with the law-enforcement/emergency services occupations.
I'm more of the bare-minimum, "if-you-can't-get-it-done-in-40hrs-you-suck", type of worker.
When I drove a truck, I worked and had a life at the same time.
If I became a cop or firefighter/paramedic, I would probably end up being one of the few guys who argued with the supervisors about "having a life".
Suffice it to say, I'll take my 40 and you can keep the rest.
Now, back to the parks closure and how trespassing crimes could increase!!!!

What really needs to happen is a repeal of prop 13.
Once property taxes bore a fair relation to the current value of the property, the state would get a lot more revenue.
That and adjust the ballot system so we can't vote in billions in new spending each year without a mechanism to pay for it.

The dumbest thing about this whole proposal to cut parks, is that our numerous beautiful park lands are them selves an economic generator by attracting tourism, both locally from residents traveling in state and people traveling in from out of state. From some estimates I read, every dollar that would be saved by cutting state parks will actually increase the deficit by a dollar indirectly from other lost revenue. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Just another piece of evidence to show that the state government is in panic-attack mode.
When's California going to do the right thing and split into the three, separate states it really is.
Southern, Central, Northern, then the Cascadian tip, Redding on up, could be annexed by Oregon.
Too many conflicting interests and idealogies to keep this state the same size any longer.

The real plan is for the State to sell off prime park land such as Topanga State park
to Arnolds real estate developer buddies.
