There's an island offshore full of riches just begging to be sacked. Fat tourists in bermuda shorts stroll leisurely not knowing what is about to come...
The Jolly Ridazz.
I'll plan a ride on Catalina for August if there's interest. Most should take the Catalina Express across the channel to Avalon. I can take a half dozen or so on my boat. Anyone up for taking the Sea Plane? Camp Friday and Saturday night in Avalon.
I'll bet it won't be me. It's been a while since I've been out on a small boat, but I've never yet been seasick, even when everyone around me was hurling over the side on a scuba trip. Of course, I'm digging myself a hole by saying such a thing out loud...
I'm in, if I can snag a spot on another boat (?) or afford the fee of getting there and a bike permit.
I'm no naysayer, but having hiked the whole island and stayed at each campground, Avalon is the lamest one (though still rad).
I'd suggest Blackjack campground, Little Harbor or Parsons Landing, (and maybe sailing into Two Harbors instead of Avalon) unless being on a paved road is important. And I do mean *a* paved road.
our only realistic choices for campgrounds are two harbors or avalon. these are harbors with to/from ferry transportation. if everyone wants a pure camping, swimming, mtn biking experience, two harbors would be great. avalon has bars, diving, better access, paved road, and tourists to annoy... probably a better choice for a destination. but still up in the air.
did i mention mtn. bikes can be rented on the island?
This sounds like it's right up my alley.
Fat tires, unknown areas of an island none of us have been on, sounds like a plan.
Depends on how my work arrangements look in the next month, so maybe.

@Coe - to explore the island you will need a mountain bike. or you can take you road machine and ride around town and up to the airport (i think).
seems like we've got some interest here. camping is limited. i'll call up on monday and see when i can reserve the bulk of the campsite and post some dates.
@spiral, de man: adamthelizard is well aware of the ride and expressed interest in going. I just think he needs someone like you to make him a yeasayer.
@indigis: sorry to sound like a ride-jacking troll. I've always favored the pure-camping experience but you're right; touristy Avalon sounds like the best place to congregate. Please upgrade me to a definite maybe.
Aug 23-24 has the advantage of being one of those "off" weekends where no monthly rides are scheduled, but there's a full moon on the weekend of Aug 16-17. Just sayin'...
I also vote for Avalon as a staging area, since an old friend of mine is living out there. We might even be able to add one or two locals to the expedition.
Who is for staying the night of Saturday, August 23rd. This date will let Burning man people enjoy the sacking of Avalon. You may also want to come over for Friday night thru Sunday to get the full day of playing and riding on Saturday.
Or Saturday, Sept. 6th.
Or Saturday, Sept. 13th.
Camping options are use your own tent (or not) for $12 per person (or less... looking into a group rate)
6 Man Tent Cabin for 19 per person (based on 6)
Hotels vary in price
Getting There: about $50 per person on Catalina Express. $5 for bike. (or less... looking into group rate)
Biking: Free in and around Avalon. Mtn. Bikes only inland. $20 for inland bike permit. Mtb Bike rentals available for about $20 per day.
Give me a head count and date preferences. I'll make tentative reservations for the group count.
I'm open for any of the dates as of now. No plans on going to BM so not a problem. The camping is not a problem either since I've got all my backpacking stuff I could use. I'll be down for riding where everyone else wants to. Hopefully that's all over the island.
I don't want to ride around with a bunch of camping gear, so for less than $10 difference, the tent cabins sound like a damn fine idea to me, especially considering that you get 6 people in a cabin and most of us don't have 6 man tents. We ought to pick a date and get enough cabins booked. I can front some kind of deposit, assuming it isn't for the full amount. I don't want to get stuck paying for a bunch of ridazz who don't show.
Oh ya duh, I went off topic there on the last comment. I was originally going to say:
SWEET IDEA!
I can't personally go because I am SCUBA diving that weekend (in Oxnard, otherwise I'd totally join ye). However, at Catalina make sure to have a Buffalo Milk....they will F*CK YOU UP.
QUESTION: borfo, can you answer this quickly or shoot me an email at: craig-at-indigis-dot-com
there are a ton of ridazz that i'd hate to cut out because of a conflict with BM. of the list of ridazz on that BM thread, are they all confirmed go'ers? if so, i'm posting this ride for early sept. Catalina ain't going nowhere.
