Stolen spoke cards?

Has anyone ever parked their bike outside only to find that the spoke cards were stolen?
reply
Any chance you have a broken or loose spoke which relieved tension all the way around the wheel, letting the spoke cards fall out while you were riding? That seems like a more likely scenario than spoke card theft, though I suppose it isn't impossible.

Nah, it didn't happen to me, but for some reason I'm afraid it will. Paranoia? Too attached to the little laminated guys? Hahaha. This probably sounds stupid.

It's just stuff.
They can't steal your memories of the ride.

I couldn't see someone stealing someone else spoke cards.
Only someone who could recognize the value of a spoke card would want to take one. If you are someone who recognize the value of them, you would know better that it is not something you can steal. You know to posses that card you had to been at the ride, and you had to personally received one from an organizer or helper of the organizer.
I had seem a couple of girls around the bike Kitchen that had some of the original Midnight ridazz spoke cards, from say the first eight rides on their bikes. That might peak someone interest to take them, but even then you would know that something you can had to have attended the ride to posses those. All you could do is admire them.
That or ignored them, because they are the same people that vibed me that they didn't want me at the ride as a new person coming to the rides, way back when. Thank God those people don't come on these ride anymore. This midnight ridazz thing has gotten so much better. I actually feel welcomed and part of these rides now. Back then I felt like I was unwelcomely crashing someones party.

my only souvenier from France (other than my aborted half french fetus) was the spoke card that i got for participating in the PanamAlleyCat IV race. i wore it on my spokes with pride and then it fell off my bike while riding down vermont. i was crushed (about losing the spoke card, not about the fetus).
'twas a good lesson in learning on how to not get attached to things.

In relation to what sexy was talking about, I also tend to think of spoke-cards as an equivalent of armed-forces, tour-of-duty ribbon.
The "tour" was the ride, and the "duty" was basically being there and riding in this case.
Basically, they're all those colorful, little rectangular objects you would see on the uniform of a high-ranking, military officer.

I've seen it done first hand....an artist was doing an installation at ReForm School in Silverlake about a year ago and all his either Seattle or portland spoke cards were stolen from his rims. No joke....he was only inside the store for about an hour.

One of the regular LACM riders had all her spoke cards stolen from her bike while she was in the downtown Library. So it does happen.

I like collecting more then wearing too, and that's why I'm hesitant to wear them, hence this thread. Now I don't know what to do.. hope that they don't get stolen or take them off. OR GET TWO. Yeah.

what a bummer! what kind of person would steal a spoke card. I guess the same type of person who would steal beer. No I think this is lower.
What do you do with it after. Say I went on this ride when you didn't.
How lame.
I like the way bentstrider described it.
I only cards I have where I didn't go on the ride is from my cousin in Oakland, we have each others cards from rides that we organized. I happen to be at the beginning of a ride that I didn't go on and they had extras and gave me one.

Definitely lower. Lower because the stupidity level is through the roof. I'm afraid to take my bike to school and lock it in the school bike racks because I KNOW there are stupid people at school.

you know i would rather have my spoke cards taken ....I HATE it when people steal beer...it makes us all look bad and gets the cops involved...and because of people who steal beer i can't go to the liquor store next to my house anymore cuz some one (will remain nameless in this story) stole beer from there and then bolted back to my house and the workers saw its fucked up cuz i wasn't involved and still got punished

I only put "second copy" cards in my spokes. The first copy goes in the Archive.
I've never had a spoke card swiped from my bike, but when I lock up, I take everything else that is not bolted down with me. Once at the dentist, some creep kyped the tools out of my seat pack.
It all goes with me now.
Oh, yeah, and detatch the front wheel and lock it up with the frame and back wheel!

i use a mini mini mini mini mini u-lock for each of my spoke cards. i can't afford to lose another inanimate object that goes around and around on my spokes, and collects dirt and debris from all my elite core riding.

I leave them on the coffee table because they look rad (the robot mob one is just tight) and I don't have cool books to put there because I give mine away.
Good observation on spoke cards and tour of duty ribbons bentstrider. They're also like marks of distinction, sort of like chevrons ("^" <- those things), except that chevrons are apparently shaped after the penis, while spoke cards are box-like in appearance.

I put mine at home. In my dresser drawer. In a lockbox.
I'm too paranoid to ride around with them.

I've got some random collection on my bike (all rides I've been on, of course); a ton more at home in a box; I sent my extras to Creative Thing for the archive and I should scan the ones in the box for Ingrid's page.
Of course I'd be bummed if someone was low enough to steal them off my wheels (better the cards than the wheels though), but I figure they're best seen & used; there will always be more rides and more cards.

the other night i was unlocking my bike at vons in downtown ojai, and this woman walked up to me and told me how she liked my white wheels, and asked where she could buy a pair. the bike was locked nondriveside, and she asked me what was in my rear wheel. i said "oh" and flipped the bike around and she started reading the spoke card "hello, lets fuck....YOURE DIRTY!" and then she slapped me on the ass and walked into the store.

Ok, i've been meaning to post this for awhile...I HAVE had multiple spoke cards stolen from outside the smokehouse...and while i used to agree with sexy's view on the likelihood of theft, i now know that there are just major douchebags out there. i have lost 2 queremos rock ones (la calavera and EL BARACHO, very upsetting)...one of my two spoken dissent mic-shaped ones, and one of my ultra-cool crank mob ones with the dare on the back...at least one other one too.
i'm surprised my lebowski one is still around...i keep my super sexy translucent imperial century one on my nice bike on purpose, since it never gets locked up in shady places :)
