Does anyone know of some touring cycling shoes that aren't so damn ugly? Do those dress shoes on the formal ride thread actually exist? The link is to a different shoe.

I usually wear mountain shoes that look like normal sneaks. Lots of companies make them like that including shimano. What style are you looking for?

+1 on the shimano MTB shoes. That was the main reason I bought mine. They weren't all those psychedelic colors that made me want to stay on my bike instead of walking into the store.

well it depends, are you good for riding?

You know how when somebody comes up to you all excited because they just built their first fixed gear conversion, and it always has junkpile cage pedals along with these weird cheapass clip-and-strap things that are black and part rubber/plastic with black vinyl straps? You know what I'm talking about? Whatever they're called? Well, use those, and you can wear whatever the hell shoes you want to.

Yeah, but I thought the OP just wanted to be able to wear formal shoes to the Formal. One night wouldn't be so bad.

Oh, that's right...you are the OP. Never mind. In that case, sometimes you can find some fairly classy old touring shoes on eBay. Nobody is making any decent looking ones right now, I can tell you that. I've looked.

oh, this was unrelated to the formal ride. this is just for me riding. i use toeclips now and want to upgrade.

I'm going to agree with user1. Shimano has a couple pairs of mountain shoes that look pretty unassuming and they last forever. Mine have been through three tours and two years of commuting. I even wear them at work all day.

If you want to wear regular shoes but still have the same amount of FOOT TO PEDAL FUSION...
You gotta get TOSHI DOUBLE STRAPS
They are fuggin expensive ($90-$100 for both sides of straps), but they are worth every penny and they will last very very long.
MKS GR-9's, Soma quad gates, and toshi doubles. Been running this setup for 7 months, the toshis have barely any wear on them. You can wear basically any shoe you want, and the GR-9's make it stupidly easy to get your toe in the cage.
Or you can just look for shoes!
How ya doin' shues!

Shimano MT-40, to be specific. One of the least hideous clipless cycling shoes currently on the market. The SIDI Bullet (not cheap, though) is also pretty decent looking. Make no mistake, the Bullets very definitely say "cycling specific" to any and all who see them, but at least they're not hugely gaudy about it. Relatively. It's all relative.
