This being discussed many playces, dis shud be one of dem.
Pleez come to SMCM, we needs you.

In all seriousness, we did this up in N.Hollywood this Saturday and it was pretty damned effective.
It felt like a larger, scale version of that Benny Hill skit involving the Keystone Cops running all over the place.
If I could make it down there on time without any holdbacks this Friday, this could be the first SMCM I've ever made.
bentstrider09.2.08 - 6:57 pm

SMPD is always encouraging use of the bike path. When we've had enough of Santa Monica, maybe we should all use that to get down to Venice.
JB09.2.08 - 9:53 pm
reply
Could the cops follow onto the bike path? Might that work to cause them to lose track of where the ride is?
reedie09.2.08 - 9:57 pm
reply
Well, given that the cops have SUVs that can go on the sand, Crown Vics that can go down the pedestrian walk, and cops on bikes that can go on the bikepath, it's probably not the best way to lose them.
But it would be a great way to make the point that herding several hundred cyclists onto a bike path frequented by pedestrian tourists and clueless Angelenos walking around (despite the numerous signs to the contrary), is not the best way to incorporate cyclists into the infrastructure.
JB09.2.08 - 10:11 pm
reply
Yes, the ride has gone down the path, and then exited the path back into the Main St area. It was May or April. It did lose the cops. We rode around in SM unescorted for a while, and I don't remember what happened after - most likely we beat it for Venice.

i can't sleep im so excited.. it's like when i was ten and we would do army plans on how to protect the streets that we lived on (like anything would ever happen - and what did we think we were going to protect them with, wrapping paper tubes and a few water guns?) we even had a plan B for getting out if plan A went to shit and we were all caught -- BIKES!!!
you get my drift, once we're in their boundaries, on their turf.. it's anybody's game.. i have butterflies in my tummy..
and forgetting your front or back light is instant removal from the game, that's just asking for it!
REI is on the corner of 4th and Santa Monica Blvd. - pick'em up on your way there..

yea, that's what i am talking about - cops and robbers on bikes, only SMPD pussies are on motorized bikes and need to be run by gas - let's see if we can take them in circles, circle after circle after circle so that they run out of that crappy ass gas and then we'll see who smelling whose dust and soar on outta there!

here's what Roadblock wrote last month. The no bike lane streets is the best idea.:
======
So I went on my second smcm yesterday and I have to say it was really F.U.N. Except for the tickets of course. That being said.....
I noticed that people were itching to get out of the city of santa monica.... which seemed to defeat the purpose. Part of the fun on this ride was that everyone was obeying the laws and we got split into groups of 50 slow moving cyclists per red light. This made things difficult for the police to control. Most people dutifully road legal. Because of that we ended up playing a huge game of cat and mouse with the cops. It was funny as shit and I'm sure it cost the city of sm a lot of extra money as skd pointed out.
Rather than try to escape to venice it became obvious to myself and others that we should have just been riding completely legal and let the bikes ride where they may even if the mass becomes split, it eventually came back together and in the process confused traffic AND the cops. At one point I laughed out loud as the cops sped ahead anticipating our direction and we suddenly turned right on the green and the back part stopped when it went red. What a conundrum!
I saw cops being dicks and ignoring drivers who broke the law. I saw them giving tickets for every little infraction.
I know I'm the last person to be suggesting shit for smcm but fuck it... Next SMCM I propose the following:
1. EVERY single rider in the mass ride completely legal. Ride as though you are a single rider and you obey every law. Stop at reds stay to the right lane flash the lights signal the hands. You must be absolutely disciplined. The cops will likely ticket you if you don't.
2. Do NOT ride streets that have a bike lane. This way cops can't ticket for not riding in the bike lane.
3. Don't worry if the mass gets split up into many parts. It will all come together and groups will find other groups eventually.
4. Set a perimeter in the beginning. Say some street boundaries that all groups attempt to ride within. Make it inside the worst of the traffic zones and freeway entrances. Make it hell for drivers. Because riding legal is more of a traffic night mare than just parading through.
5. Video tape as much as you can. Looks like the cops ticketed for at least a few non violations last night. These should have been taped for evidence.
6. If you gonna be a bear. Be a grizzly! If cm is a show of peaceful protest of bikes then make it monster. Make the city spend so much money and time trying to police it that it breaks the bank! Fuck santa monica anyway!
The result is complete bicycle cluster fuck chaos and the cops won't be able to do shit about it so long as everyone is disciplined enough to ride legal. And for fucks sake stay in SM don't run to venice. Make these coppers work for their pay! Haha!

ill try my best....
well the "law" or "norm" states that we have to have red lights rear, white lights front true...
1.but if you all want to play cat and mouse...switch the shit around so that you know who is a rida and who is not. because if the smc police will be on bikes one would need to know who is the fuzz and who is not correct?
2. I was suggesting a morse code of some sort but with lights... FUCK THAT!!! I think it should be mandatory that we as ridaz create a way to communicate non verbally with lights...(fuck i feel smart now) in case of trouble...
ya dig???
pretti*ugli09.3.08 - 5:29 pm
reply
yea, interesting.. not sure how this would work, but i think we should put some thought into it.
seeing as how when i would organize political protests, we were warned of undercops to cause trouble and get the crowd going..
it would be interesting to have our own inside game..
huh.. something to ponder over..
bondink09.3.08 - 5:32 pm

i like the idea of the lights. we could do alot with that if we can somehow get everyone in on it. such as both lights flashing = normal, front light solid = split, rear light solid = ???. It might not be that much of reality though on such a big ride as this one. with fewer people i could see it happening but not with hundreds of drunk occasional ridazz.
larsenf09.3.08 - 5:51 pm
reply
tru@larsenf...
on the other hand if at least 30 percent of the ridaz knew the codes they could direct the drunken majority.
i would most definitely be inebriated and know the codes.

keep SMCM inside Santa Monica.
Ride letter of the law legal.
Allow yourself to be happy if the ride gets split into small clusters.
Try to join others when you see them....
with that in mind there is no need to worry about secret police or bike cops.... they could have the national guard riding along and if it's all legal the whole thing willl become one giant traffic cluster fuck at the behest of the cops themselves.

STFU about light codes....just don't break the law....go off in different groups.....choose boundries in S.M. and stay within them.....ride as much as possible on streets without bike lanes.
Print this portion below and keep it with you (pay attention to #3):
21202. (a) Any person operating a bicycle upon a roadway at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at that time shall ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except under any of the following situations:
(1) When overtaking and passing another bicycle or vehicle proceeding in the same direction.
(2) When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
(3) When reasonably necessary to avoid conditions (including, but not limited to, fixed or moving objects, vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards, or substandard width lanes) that make it unsafe to continue along the right-hand curb or edge, subject to the provisions of Section 21656. For purposes of this section, a "substandard width lane" is a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle and a vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane.

SMPD will be ready and waiting for us.
They may even resort to violence. This SMCM may not be for the squeamish. I think those who don't want to be tackled from their bike, ticketed or sprayed with chemical substance, need to think long and hard about participating in SMCM this Friday.
I may be overstated the danger, but last month they were out in force. This Friday, they could be prepared to take this conflict to the next level.
On that note, I will be there. The harassment of bicyclists must stop!

SKD,
I think that's pretty unlikely.
However, if it does happen, it would be ideal, because an ACLU attorney will be present at the start of the ride. Open and shut, case closed, go home SMPD would be the result.

nice way to scare people off.... seriously.... they don't care THAT much... the cops are not going to get violent unless smcm gets violent first or someone tries to evade a ticket.

One other (possibly bad idea) why not return to Santa Monica directly after Venice? The coppers would then lose track of the ride, and dealing with that strategy in the future could create logistical difficulties for them.

Although I hope SMPD wouldn't stoop to this level, exercise some common sense. If someone (especially someone you haven't seen on a lot of previous rides), begins engaging in / encouraging destructive and harmful illegal activity, call that person out on it / don't participate / get it on film.

I'm sure someone got the selective enforcement on video, yes? Good! So now you can show the judge that they ignore the more grievous penalties happening with cars, and instead ticketing bicyclist for the same offense.

we did rendezvous points - we did sidewalk craps - some people were give tickets (was it 8 or 9 as the count, i don't remember) - but we got their info, we handed them handouts on how to fight the tickets and we got a lot of great footage!
and then we all went and DRANK on the Something Else Ride - so much F!U!N!
i am sure AT will have a complete recap of what went down on westsidebikeside, so i suggest waiting for that.
We may have walked away with a few tickets, but we are winning.. we made them wait for long periods of time while we sent small groups through stop signs and took them in loopy circles -- eventually they will grow tired..

Somebody's missing the point.
SMCM = win.
SMCM is about expressing and exercising the right to cycle en masse in Santa Monica.
The police, for whatever reason, have taken exception to this, and attempted to crack down on this using an unnecessarily high level of surveillance via officers in patrol cars, on motorcycles, and on bicycles, using an overly strict interpretation of the California Vehicle Code to ticket bicyclists on these rides.
If you weren't aware of that before the ride, there were nice folks on megaphones making you aware of that fact at the start of the ride, and handing out fliers explaining what to do in case you did get ticketed. If you somehow missed all this, the police presence made the point abundantly clear in short order.
If the police presence and having to ride hyper-legally equals fail to you, there were any number of roads leading away from the ride that you could have taken.
I, and I believe the vast majority of the folks that showed up for this ride, did not get ticketed and had an awesome time.
This ride, plus the fun rides that kicked off after SMCM made for an awesome night of Westside riding.

if you can't let go of the idea of the ride moving in one mass.... you will have to remove this ride from your calendar. Hit LACM instead. Cops in that area are much more lenient though it does split up from time to time because of them...
"I'm sorry to bum you out but the smpd has got major issues with this and they are going to press this ride hard until it stops."
they can press all they want, legally they have boundaries and this ride exists now just outside the boundaries. it's a success!
" you know there were undercover cops riding with you, right? I wish you all good luck"
AWESOME. let them ride and have fun too! They will see just how fun the ride is. It's like having embedded reporters! Embedded police officers! Just be disciplined to ride legal. This particular ride is like no other ride! It is about seeing the fun in "chaotic discipline." Wish I could have made this one. Next time I will get out on the wesside for this though.
