Learn to Weld and MoRe!!

Hey guys, I've been thinking for a little while that it might be fun to offer people the chance to learn to weld and build crazy things at my house in Northridge on Sundays. I've got a TIG welder, I never took a class or anything in it, my dad just gave me a few minutes of instruction and then just answered occasional questions I had and that's how I learned. If I can do it, then so can you!! Let's build some more tall bikes and freak bikes!! Besides that, as a bunch of you know, I like to make other things, like crazy bright green lights, synthesizers built into books, knitting, stereoscopic photography... so if anyone wants to swing by and learn about that stuff too I'd be happy to give a hand. I'll even help you with math homework if that's your cup of tea :P
So what do you think? Sundays, during the day, please donate $10 for supplies for welding. Bring junk bikes, tools, hands, and ideas. I'm not doing it as a class because classes are for pussies. All you need is the will and I will show you the way. I don't claim to be an expert, but I'd like to share what I know. If you wanna come by to just help out and provide your knowledge, that's more than welcome, it's appreciated! Please no booze though cause this shit can be dangerous. As an added perk you get to hang out with my dad who used to design theme park for Disney and is an amazing artist in literally every medium.
Call me, email me, or post on this forum.

@ tallcans i guess... you are my old school homie who introduced me to the whole scene... though don't you love my family enough to pay for your gas and rods?
@ speedy. right now i was thinking every weekend just cause i'm sure you all (and myself) wanna be able to finish something substantial in a month or two.

I think I would enjoy learning how to TIG weld, just depends on how crazy the Saturdays are, not sure I would enjoy going over the Sepulveda Pass hungover.

Yeah I guess you could JB Weld a bike together....
I didn't even know what JB Weld was until I googled it just now. Shows how much I know!

lol, i would love to see that. but aside from welding a stripped lockring i dont recommend it for much.

Then I misunderstood you. I thought you were recommending doing that instead of welding :P

JB weld bike is a bad idea. So bad I think we should do it. It would break for sure.

LOL
I saw online somewhere how to build a tall bike without welding and they did an inverted frame and everything was being held together with wood and twine. That seemed like a bad idea.

@ari
I brazed some supports onto that set of green handlebars. Also I filled a bunch of cracks that had formed from all the flexing. That thing is about 2 pounds heavier now from all the brass rod we melted into it but I dont think it will break anytime soon.

Awesome. You were the best person to sell it in "as is" condition to :P
You think I should post this shit in the rides? It seems like only a handful of us even look at the forums.

Paul at Choppercabras built a whole bunch of BMX Tall Bikes for the last event, they are twitchy as hell, but not too Shabby for the Racing and Battle Royale he put them thru

Does anyone have any ideas for a design other than a tall bike? I loved spooks freak bike at the last los angelopes.

Someone asked about the tools and equipment I have, so here's some of the stuff you get to be working with!!
We're using my dad's studio which takes up a 3 car garage and another 2 car garage tent behind it. We've got a bunch of angle grinders, chop saw, plasma cutter, horizontal band saw, large standing metal sander thing, huge sand blasting booth. The thing that I always find lacking is the little tools like wrenches, especially if everyone is taking apart stuff at the same time.

If you come on Sunday you can meet the guy that made those rings (my dad) and he'll even show you how to make them yourself.

Hey schmuck, this is a fantastic offer. I'm really looking forward to learning how to weld. I don't even want to build anything in particular (yet), I just want to practice welding tubes until I can make really nice welds. I'm sending email now.

This is a great idea! I'd be there if I could but I'll be hanging out with my own cool dad this weekend as well as my cool kids. Big week. Will this be an ongoing thing? I'd be very interested in learning more about those super-bright green l.e.d.s. My girlfriend got hit a few weeks back and I'm sure some bright helmet action would have prevented it. (she's fine by the way)_

Well I did say Sundays, but for now let's just see how this week goes. If it's the most awesome thing ever then it'll happen every week. If it sucks and drives me crazy then it'll never happen again. You'll find out after it's over if it's worth doing again!!
