Thread Box:
David Byrne in LA?
Thread started by trickmilla at 09.30.09 - 9:37 am

I heard David Byrne is talking bikes in L.A. today all I could find is info about a library talk he is doing on Friday with year 1 Ridazz Vet Jimmy Lizama:
Unfortunately its $25

FROM BLOGDOWNTOWN.COM

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — While he may be most famous as a musician or filmmaker, Talking Head David Byrne is also a devout bicyclist. His just released book, 'Bicycle Diaries,' talks about his decades of cycling in cities around the world.

On Friday, October 2, Byrne will be joined by Bicycle Kitchen co-founder Jimmy Lizama, LADOT Bicycle Coordinator Michelle Mowery and UCLA urban planner Donald Shoup in an ALOUD discussion about "Cities, Bicycles, and the Future of Getting Around."

The program description asks:

Musician, artist, author and devout bicyclist David Byrne turns his attention to the fractured, car-mad city of Los Angeles. How can LA—with one of the world’s most challenging transportation systems—become a more bicycle-friendly city? How might the city change if more people made a bicycle their primary mode of transportation? Join David Byrne as he leads a panel of bike advocates, city officials and urban planners in examining the bicycle’s role in transforming the urban experience.

Tickets are on sale via the Library Foundation's ALOUD website, and are $25 for the general public and $20 for Library Associates. The event takes place at The Aratani/Japan America Theatre in Little Tokyo, and bicycle valet will be provided courtesy of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition.

I'm going to this.. The $25 goes to funding the library so it's steep but for a good cause. Anyone else going?

I saw that too. What rides do we have going on Saturday?
We should swing by around 10pm and pick him up.
Or make Little Tokyo the start of the ride.

I'll be there outside working the bike valet.

I believe that there is a better deal available on tickets through the LACBC.

Just don't take him on any hills. There's this fat dude with a terrorist beard that hates hills. If you see him, avoid the hills or he just might take Mr. Byrne out.

suggestions for the quickest way down to this event from Sepulveda & Santa Monica? I'm leaving at 5:30ish...was thinking about going SM to Wilshire & then taking the Metro. Is that reasonable? Thoughts?

Quickest way? There's some express bus that goes down town from there. Other than a car, that would be the quickest.

Pretty much take the route we took that one time coming back from the pier. SM blvd to little SM blvd, and you remember that little road I showed you? Take that then get back on SM Blvd. Take SM Blvd to Fairfax, then just do a right and a left thing through the neighborhood and get to Hollywood and Highland. From there take the Red Line to 7th and Flower station. Get out on Flower and head north two blocks on the sidewalk and you're there.

Here's part of the route, http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3234269

the ride is only 12 miles from Sep/SM blvd...

thats at most an 1:15 ride.... if you ride quicker you can safely cover 12 miles across L.A. in about 50min... you have plenty of time to make it by 8pm...

I would take Olympic over Wilshire....

Public Trans wont really get you there quicker at that time... youre better off on your bike (assuming you can do 12 miles easily)... if not, thats cool.... take Olympic bus all the way... but I would recommend riding past Fairfax before jumping on a bus.... everything before is wack traffic for cars/bus...its stopped so bad you can just ride between traffic...

Take SM Blvd ---> Ave of Stars (R) --> Olympic Blvd ---> Downtown, just ride up to the building...

I'll be riding over from Westchester after work. Leaving the office around 5:30 p.m. the better to work in a stop at El Parian on Pico near Union for a couple of their excellent carne asada tacos to go.

its Los Angeles.... the only hills are north (east & west) of downtown....

L.A. is flat... there are some small inclines here or there, but nothing to worry about... however if you havent ridden across west La to downtown... id say make sure you're very well lit... and well... i dont know... it can be a hectic-ish ride if youre not comfortable with riding in heavy traffic...

i dont know... just go to Scion and buy a new car because they support bicycle culture.

if you're on your bike at 5:30pm... you should cover 12miles, in a little over an hour.... i dont know... if you go really leisurely, lets say 1:30 max...

if you ride 10mph... you'll get there nearly in an hour.

6mph = 2 hours.

so if you ride 3mph... try alternate-alternate trans too...

I'm ok w/riding in heavy traffic, I just haven't ridden Olympic into dwntn from West LA before. I ride into Hwood from West LA every day, however, & I *can* do inclines, just like to be prepared/know what I'm going into.
I'm not quite sure what any of this has to do with buying a Scion, however.
Thanks for the tips though...much appreciated...

I thought the original request was that she get from point A to point B as quick as possible? You can pour all her heart and soul into getting to the Red Line station, then have a chill 15 minute ride to the destination. How are the other routes quicker?

it's mostly gonna depend on the other person I'm riding with, too...but I am more inclined to hustle to the red line & do it that way, cuz it seems quicker as well...but all this info is *always* good for me to have, nonetheless...we'll see what happens...

GAH. Never seen Mowery speak, don't know much about her, but what *was* that??? Besides being BORING, she said, oh, well, um, NOTHING. I'm so glad that she's from LA and has ridden a bike for a long time, but...is this what usually happens when she speaks?
Jimmy was fantastic, and while David didn't seem too prepared, I think he did point out some interesting points and I was pleased to see him say positive things about the culture of downtown Los Angeles, to an extent...

I have heard Mowery speak twice, and I learned she is a strong cyclist and very proud of that fact. I'm sure she said some other stuff, but I don't recall.
Did anyone ride with David afterward?

As far as I know, Byrne didn't show up by bike (too bad) but at least 115 other people did - that was how many bikes we valet parked - which I was told accounted for about 20% of the audience.

I was a little bummed about David Byrne not hanging outside for a few minutes, but the guy is a big music star so, you know, I guess I understand.

Mowery was surprisingly not as boring as she usually is, but as is typical when we're talking with the underling to the underling to the underling to the underling's underling - don't expect too much.

Jimmy's talk gave me the most hope.
