Something productive I thought might interest the creative community within the bike scene of LA:
Request for Proposals for Artist-Designed Bicycle Racks
The City of Ventura Public Art Program is accepting proposals by July 8 for artist-designed bicycle racks to be installed in high use locations throughout the City. The goal is to enhance Ventura as a bicycle-friendly city as more Ventura residents turn to cycling and other healthy, eco-friendly modes of transportation. Artist designs should be imaginative and FUNctional-able to accommodate two to six bicycles and conform to established safety guidelines.
Each selected artist will receive $5,000 for the final design and fabrication per bicycle rack. The City of Ventura will be responsible for all installation. Proposals will be considered for reproduction in limited edition series and should include a separate budget for the fabrication of additional racks.
Artists interested in submitting proposals should exhibit the following criteria:
* Experience working with durable materials specific to the outdoor environment.
* Demonstrated success in comparable projects using creative, innovative and effective approaches
* Ability to understand a locale's sense of place and design in a context-sensitive manner.

This is a project LACMA needs to get off it's gluteal muscles and get going on. Their lame ass double U posts are falling apart and look so dull in front of a world class museum.
I'd like to propose a tube outline of car cause, you know, LA's a car city. It would look similar to the pic, but more durable, with larger tubes. It would be a great daily example of how many bikes it would take to get to the volume of one car. And I can just fantasize about all the cool stickers that it would have on it!

As long as it's not those idiotic steel plates with a cut-out bicycle silhouette.
How about a collection of crucifixes jambed into the concrete. Yeah?
Or, better yet, pentagrams!!

Fuuuuuck. How about just being sensible and putting u loops in... paying people to reinvent the wheel is such a waste of scarce money.... if the LADOT does this again we need to riot.

Actually... spec work is the cheapest thing they can do. $5000 is peanuts compared to what they'd probably end up paying an industrial design group or something. Personally, I value innovative design for street furniture. I mean, they could throw up the loops, which work... and are great... but they're showing artistic ambition. In the end, an interesting city is profitable, since it's good for tourism and all that stuff too.
We've all seen shitty bike racks, that much is true... but u-loops are not necessarily the only answer.

Valid point, but keep in mind that the project is for art pieces, and that is in Ventura.

I think that LADOT spending $5,000 on 50 bike racks (assuming @$100 with labor + materials) would be a good investment. Yeah 50 is a minuscule amount for Los Angeles, but Ventura is giving away
multiple $5,000 awards. Think of how many bike racks LA could buy for $20,000.
