In the vein of the breathalyzer, Philips has developed an on-the-go drug test, that can be used by the side of the road to test suspected imbibers for cocaine, heroin, cannabis, amphetamines and methaphetamine. Unlike the standard alcohol testing equipment, this one is used by having the suspect spit into a small receptacle, which is then inserted into the measurement chamber which contains magnetic nanoparticles coated with ligands that bind to one of five different drug groups, delivering color coded test results in about 90 seconds. Philips, which has been developing the device since 2001, built it as an optical device that would be easy to mass produce for law enforcement. The company expects to ship them by the end of the year, though there's no word on exactly which markets will employ them as of yet.

i believe this violates search and seizure laws... i heard something about how apparently these tests dont ONLY reveal drugs in your system, but also private things like embarassing diseases or other private things about your body that you'd prefer to keep to yourself (maybe if pregnancy?) i'm not exactly sure of what it can find out but we may have some protection against it
This won't stand the legal test. Lawyers will have a field day trashing this unit's inability to prove intoxication at the time. Sure, you could maybe face charges for having recently been on drugs, but this couldn't prove guilt in being intoxicated at the time of arrest or time of vehicle operation.
Being under the influence of cannabis is not a crime. You can't be given a ticket. You can't be arrested. Unless you are operating a vehicle, then you can, but you can't get in trouble for being stoned in public like you can being drunk in public.
Possession of marijuana is illegal. Smoking it isn't.
according to California law, a bicycle is not a vehicle, it is a conveyance. however, all sections referring to vehicles apply to bicycles, excluding those that specifically refer to motor vehicles.

for your information, the word "vehicle" encompasses motor vehicles, bicycles, and other types of conveyances. A fucking boat is considered a vehicle. The word vehicle is DEFINED as any type of conveyance. I'm not talking CA law here, I am talking English language. god you can be really annoying.
