My Bianchi was boosted off the bus rack in Santa Monica tonight. So calling all Westsidazz please keep an eye out for that chrome Bianchi w/ hot pink grips and mini boxing gloves dangling from the saddle. A report has been filed with SaMo PD and the bike is registered. Please help a hommie out and keep those peepers peeled.

Where where you when it was lifted? Let's try to get info for 'eachother' in order to be more aware should we notice a dodgy (stolen) bike somewhere.

Sorry your bike got stolen, I hope you can get it back.
That really worries me that there could be people snatching bikes off bus bike racks if that is what happened.
post pictures so we know what to look out for.

This kind of thing is total BS, especially since you are not allowed to lock your bike to the rack on the bus.
IMO, the city should be liable for shit like this when they get stolen. Or at the VERY least, allow us to lock the bikes!
I'll keep my eyes open, and I'm sorry that someone stole your ride.

Iggy,
Sorry to hear about the theft. Fuckin bummer.
I don't know about being able to lock bikes to bus racks, but I strap the back wheel to the rack with a length of inner tube. This is really because I'm paranoid about the thing jumping the rack on LA's 'well maintained' roadways. It's not a lock but it might slow someone down long enough for you to do something.
Good luck getting the ride back.

yeah that's the one, I work there. It happened around 7:15 pm on Santa Monica Blvd. between 3rd and 4th.

The MTA's policy about not being able to lock the bike is f**ked up. They don't have any liability if the bike pops off the rack either. About the only thing you can do is lock the bike before putting it on the rack and stay at the front of the bus. At least that's what I do. Yet another reason to have a foldie ah?

Dammit Annie, how can this happen? Did you lock it?
First off, you should check those yard sales in North Long Beach this coming weekend. See if you can spot your bike there. Second, make some flyers and offer a reward...yes a reward, for the return of your bike...no questions asked. The idiots want money....just give them money. A bike is more precious than money.

Hearing about stolen bikes blows.
I also ride the bus. I stand in the very front where I can see it. If anyone tries to steal it, I'll smash their face with my u-lock.
As an added precaution, you can also lock the back wheel to the frame before you put it in the rack. Than it's a foot race if someone jacks it.

i lock my bike up to the bus rack, unless it's my hummer, i hope someone steals it because it's to heavy, BUS DRIVERS NEVER TELL ME SHIT, about locking up my bianchi or trek, YOU THINK THE BUS DRIVER GOING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING? LOCK IT UP, DONT LOOK AT THE DRIVER, HOP ON THE BUS, THEN SEE IF HE'S GOING TO SAY SOMETHING, IF HE DOES, TAKE YOUR "SWEET" TIME UNLOCKING IT, PULLING IT OFF THE RACK. I BET AFTER YOU HOLD UP THE BUS, THAT BUS DRIVER WONT SWEAT IT NEXT TIME, LOL,so LOCK YOUR BIKE UP, THEN AT LEAST YOU'LL KNOW THAT IT'S SAFE ON THAT RACK, I CANT SEE ANYONE STEALING THE "BUS RACK" TOO MANY BOLTS, NOT ENOUGH TIME."
GOOD LUCK ON THE RECOVERY.

I haven't read the whole thread, but this is a great idea. I was able to recover, several months after the theft, a motorcycle that was stolen from my house in San Francisco because I had it listed on a local bay area stolen motorcycle database. The prospective buyer noticed that the seller was acting shifty, so he stalled and then looked online, called me, and after staking out the house for about 8 hours (in about the worst neighbourhood in Richmond, murder capital of California), I was finally able to recover the bike, though I couldn't get the meth-heads who stole it (and trashed it) prosecuted, no matter how hard I tried.
A database of stolen bikes is a great idea to add to the list of site improvements, and very easy to implement.

Guys I went to go pick these parts up today, and I could tell you with out a doubt, these parts were not stolen. If the guy gives you his cell number, tells you where he's working, tells you where he lives, chances are the parts aren't stolen. And yes the guy did know he was selling parts that new totaled over $300. Turned out he was a former road racer. Even though the guy was in his 60s, he looked more fit than many of the ridazz I see that's a 1/3 is age. And yes he looked more fit than myself too.
Stop thinking everyone is a thief and do a little investigating first. Then a little deductive reasoning would help. If it still looks too good to be true, post it as a MUST PICK UP!!!!!
Anyways, thanks for the inadvertent heads up.

(forwarding this message from a friend) ...My friend Daisy just got her Zimmerman bike stolen, on camera, in front of her bank, some douche bag cut her lock and rode away with it leaving his bike. Hollywood. Keep your eyes out for it.

Before you all ask me what kind of lock it was, the answer is I don't know. Just trying to get the photo out asap so we can all be on the lookout.

It was a cable lock. (Surprise, surprise.)
The thief was pretty stupid though. The bike is a Zimmerman, and it's the 4th frame built by Zimmerman (a small local builder), so it's not like it will be possible to resell this one easily.

There's gotta be an amber alert system for bikes or something. Twitter it up maybe? Something for all the MR people to check up on. Because as each day passes after the steal, I feel that finding the bike becomes exponentially lower.
