The 4th Annual All City to Ride will be Friday December 11, 2009
Ridazz of every stripe from every corner of the greater L.A. area, will converge on Downtown Los Angeles. We will ride together, collect toys, then have a thank you party.
ACTR is our chance to show l.a. what bike love is all about!
We have 3 years experience with this ride and lots of information to share.
We have ironed out lots of issues that used to make past planning difficult and uncertain.
But for this amazing tradition to continue its gonna take responsible ridazz stepping up to the plate to make this happen.
We need:
A charity!
coordinators, planners, promoters, and ride-leaders from every neighborhood possible.
Flyer, poster, design, printing and promotion.
Entertainment - Music, Visuals, Decoration, Tee-shirt Printing, Photo Booth, and ???
Beer
Porta-Potties
Production $$
Clean-up crew.

We need this to happen! No it will happen! I'm in for what ever is needed. The good people who host Bike Day LA do a good job with events, and Space20 is a great venue. You may want to post a ride to meet for organization so we can get the ball rolling. I'm a former LAFD firefighter and was involved with "The Spark of Love" toy drive, and I can get a an LAFD rep to come to the event to receive the toys collected.

A meet up ride is a great idea.
We very likely have a venue on lock.
We should find out any day now.
This has traditionally been one of the biggest hurdles.
If it works out with the venue in question this will be a huge chunk of work out of the way.
The venue is perfect in almost every way, including the price.

hey so me and my girl will try to be there but one thing i wanted to bring up is can we slow it down this year because there where tons of rider who got lost and split up due to every one racing to to the meet up points its supposed to be a fun ride not a race..
Looks like some chick is soliciting for free production work on this site. Seems like a natural fit. They get something, we get something. I mean it's not like they're broke or anything.
i wasn't on the ride I was at the venue.
But basically, it takes collective leadership and communication to keep a ride under control. As I understand it, last years ride got hijacked at some point. It's not uncommon.
Anyway, its a great suggestion, and we will remind the ride leaders to work together and keep the ride under control.

I'm not sure what you mean. But by "production $$" i am saying that we will need start up funds for things like: beer, screen-printing, out-houses, etc.
We can fundraise to make back the money usually but we usually need some money up front to get things rolling.
I'm volunteering my services to make an approx. 5 mile route from the meet up spot to the after party...or whatever length of ride is needed. patrick, email me.

Not sure if the Tamale Lady will be there again this year....but what do you all think about contacting Kogi or Calbi bbq and seeing if they'll drop by that night?
Last year ACTR was one of the most amazing experiences in my riding "career". All of the riders coming together to try and brighten a childs holiday. I really want to contribute whatever spare time I have towards this event.
FYI - We are looking for a person and/or crew to take charge of the coordination of the entire event.
I'm happy to share information, make contacts, and help out, but I would really love to be able to ride the ride this year and pass on the torch on to others who want to see this ride continue and prosper.
"just call me if you need anything" is great.
but we need somebody to make that call.
If you are reliable, committed, and flexible consider being that person!

calbi bbq is korean bbq as well. they're a small company that are usually on central and 2nd street in little tokyo. really good tacos. beef, pork, chicken, and tofu.
they'd be a nice addition to the event IMO.

Calbi is a direct and blatant rip off of Kogi. I would not give them my business just on principle alone. There is a reason Kogi always has a line and calbi never does.

not to derail....but at one time, McDonalds was the only fast food burger....Carls, Jack in the box, in n out, wendy's, etc..by your theory could all be considered rip offs...try calbi then decide...I like both trucks....the difference is that there's no lines at calbi...
on another note, there are a lot of "fusion" trucks around town nowadays...sushi, chinese/mexican, korean bbq.....it's all so new to us....in a year from now, there's gonna be 10 more at the very least.....bottom line is we need to make this thing a success....if any of these trucks can handle 300-500 people ordering food over a few hours time....that's good enough for me....
I am all for making it a sucess and IMO Kogi has such a big following, they would bring out more people to the event that would otherwise not show up. Yeah they may just be there for Kogi, but it is a good way to get new people experience this thing we call riding bikes.

I agree with Barleye that Calbi is just a good as Kogi with a more homespun feel.
It seem to be run by a older korean couple as a family business.
Korean Tacos are not rocket science. anybody who has korean BBQ knows that is is basically a korean bbq taco with a rice tortilla instead of a corn tortilla.
It's not a huge leap to think that somebody came up with that before kogi.
Especially in places like K-Town where Koreanos and Mexicans have been living side by side for years.
Kogi
+: tastes great, hipster cache, free advertising, high volume potential
-: expensivish, hipster cache, free advertising to cars that may want to drive up
Calbi
+: tastes great, family run enterprise, an older korean family stealing back from hipster codification of their culture
-: expensivish, slower service
I love the tamale lady + family. That food is made with genuine family love.
Since tamales are a traditional family holiday food, warm hearty and with lots of vege, vegan and meat flavor options they make a pretty good fit with biking in the cold. I'm pretty sure the tamale lady can add tacos if there is a demand for that.
I think options are great. I think tradition is great. I think its great to change it up too.
We should consider having a vendor that could meet us at Olvera street to add some potential variety.
One way or another I don't think the food vendor is going to influence the number of ridazz that come out and donate toys.
The food is more something aimed at the maximum number of people to: enjoy, stay warm, feed the belly, soak up the beer, and power the trip home.
Entertainment - coordinate everything from decoration, photo booth, djs, bands, sound system, beer, etc. venue.
Publicity - posters, flyers, tee-shirts, spoke cards, email, facebook, design and graphics. get the word out. get the maximum of old and new ridazz to come out donate and party with us.
Communication - how is everybody gonna know what everybody else is doing. Somebody to organize, synthesize, and share all the information and get it out to the people who need it.
Sponsorship: trader joe's? orange 20? fat tire? If the time is put in we can get free food, beer, prizes, either to fundraise for our charity and/or to celebrate the ridazz.
Charity - who is out charity? how do they fit in with us? how can we do the most possible for them with toys and/ or $$.
The guy who served the vegan tacos at CRANK MOB was Abram De Munoz. I just found his card in my backpack. Those tacos were delicious, and he was a cool dude.

@Ms. Stephanie - it was tooo Pasadangerous.... dark windy road, to a long downhill that drops you off on a gravel road with tons of pot holes, and after that you have to do a steep climb back up... quite a few people had to walk up.
it was bad for my wheels, and everyone was complaining about it at the top.
instead i have a really fun, lit, and fast way down.

By the way, everybody, @mixtemotions mentioned the other day that Ikea is selling strings of battery powered Christmas lights right now for SUUUUPER cheap. Perfect for bike decoration.
I'm assuming we're not averse to using locations we've used before? Who set us up with Self Help Graphics? I know they're struggling a little, so they may be willing to let us use their space again because it raises their profile, and I would love to help them out by doing so.
Last year's All City Toy Ride was our first midnight ridazz experience and after that we are hooked on MDR! I never had Tamale before that day-a Korean woman who is married to an American guy-after that night I became a Tamale addict. Please ask that Tamale lady to come back again. I want more of her Sweet Corn Tamale this year !

Self Help Graphics is questionable and probably a NO..last time we used them,we were were suppose to come up with some cash .Which we did (my pocket)but I think they wanted more...
They also were really hard to get and pretty much did it for me as an exception.
GOOD NEWS! we got a good look on a DTLA space run by some ridazz.
gonna try and check it out this week.
Also, i'm down to bust out a poster if nobody else is cooking something up.
what would really help is if we can get Ridazz in different parts of the county to poster/flyer their respective bike shops/ hangouts.
join up on the google group if you wanna help ... its the only way to make sure ppl 100% in the loop.

What do you think about $1.00 items like chili dogs, chili cheese nachos, water and sodas? Not only is it affordable, its hot food and cold drinks sold from Big Daddy and China Mama from the midnightridazz SFV area.
I'm going to DNTN L.B. on Tuesday.
I'll print some fliers and hit Bike Station, LBFG, and some other spots.
I won't be able to blanket the town, but I'll be sure to hit the main shops that attract riders.
No had some from last year changed date,location to NoHo park and start time been covering west valley shops if need help with east valley let me know I printed a thousand flyers
I added the following to the ride description....I think we should do it...
"Also we ask that everyone bring something for the homeless. Sox, t-shirts, scarves, (new) underwear, blankets, etc....
All the logistics aren't figured out yet but we will be giving this stuff to homeless in and around DTLA.
There are many vendors in DTLA on Broadway and surrounding streets that sell sox for around $1/pair and boxers for super cheap too. $.99 cent stores also have stuff for cheap."

I think it would be easiest if each group, on their way into DTLA, take a few laps around skid row and that general vicinity and hand out anything you guys can bring...it will be too chaotic for the group as a whole to do it once we start riding. any thoughts?
I hope this does not at all sound dickish. But I really think we should stay focused on our goal of getting toys to a specific charity for this event. Just as a matter of having a clear message and getting the maximum number of people to donate toys ... it just makes sense to me that we should focus on 1 charity cause. It will just make it simpler for us to get our message across. Last year we had some complaints that not enough people brought toys. I think the two ways to improve this year are to get the word out to the maximum number of people and emphasize that every Ridaa NEEDS TO BRING A TOY.
I think diluting that message will only make our job more difficult.
There are 364 days in the year that we can endeavor to help other charities.

That said I 100% agree with the sentiment that we should branch out our charity efforts beyond this one cause. (toys for kids). If we come up with a ride/ event targeted at helping the homeless in DTLA I'm down to pitch in.

step up before it's too late. ACTR is a participatory event. join the Google Group and assert your self early if you wanna get involved.
Just to let you guys know that Big Daddy and China Mama will be selling chili cheese dogs, nachos, sodas and water for a $1.00. If anyone knows where the after party venue is at, please let us know.

it's more than a toy drive. there are people from the community who are offering the venue free of charge who are themselves selling food to raise money to help pay for the workspace. all of this is part of the plan that has been brewing for quite a while.

Is anyone throwing up a summary adding to main ride post?with time/place for start points? Like we did previous years..Right now I think you have to scroll thru to find them..just saying..
Is the SFV ridazz different from NoHo ridazz (TBA) it should be the same.Thanks for the updated flyer going to print shop today to get these out to the bike shops.When people see all these different starting points they will know this is something big.

Just give us a meet up time and place asap and we can put it on the next flyer.
I think the traditional place to meet up in long beach is at Lincoln Park but if you are doing the ride/ route you can have it meet where ever you want.

If you want to make your ride "official" just let us know. All it takes is giving us a start place and start time. And its done.
who knows maybe a handful of people may want to join you and your friendzz from the Whittier area. So far there aren't any rides starting from your corner of town.

I got rid of about 300 flyers this weekend.
I was riding a lot on friday and i stopped a lot of random ridazz and just gave them a flyer.
It feels like this is gonna be the best turn out in years.
I hope the weather cooperates.
The pasadena meet up is listed on the flyer, the face book and the main ride listing.
apparently the organizers haven't made a separate ride listing for the Pasadena rides.
There is 2 rides in Pasadena 1 east one central.
they will meet up with NELA on their way to DTLA.

tis true.... I've got about 5 boxes full of toys and there is NO WAY I can carry them all. I've been talking with Don (roadblock) about coordinating a pre toy ride meet. A sortof "Wolfpack NON hustle toy ride" to Olvera.

We got a big canopy (20'x40!), some heaters and the MR burn barrels for the after party
so we will be warm. plus there is a 100% chance of funderstom which always warms things up.
Everything is falling into place.
I'm freaking out ... in a good way. this is gonna be fun.

the party at TOW was simply epic.
I didn't get to DJ till 4:00 am and it was till super fun...
people we dancing till the sun came up.
On top of all the other randness, it kinda made my night.

we have over 10 start points this year.
even with rain and cold we had an amazing turnout.
3 bands 3 Djs 2 parties . and people groovin' into the a.m.
and tons of love. It felt epic to me. One of the funnest times I have in the 3 years i have been rollin with the Ridazz.

BTW/ if you wanna get your bike culture on I think BFF is gonna be in Miami this week.
Epic doesn't even start to describe last nights ride.
Even though i was soaked with puddles in my shoes i still managed to have an amazing time. Tuffingtons and Funderstorm were INSANE. But my favorite part was when all the SFV Ridazz hopped the fence into the bike path.
Props to everyone who came out and helped put this together. All the ridazz that donated, TOW(and there awesome hospitality), but especially Patrick aka Trickmilla! You can count me in on the many more years to come.
It made me really happy that Krazy Penis showed up.
In all the madness I turned around and saw that grinning face and thought.
