in response to Handbone's bike being stolen....
how about an ALL CITY REGISTER YOUR BIKE DAY?
meet at police stations all over town, register your bike, then everyone meet up for a big ass ride....
is this a lame idea?
reply
best idea. i was just writing out a big thing to post for a register your bike day.

I called a couple of LAPD stations a while back and they do not have the registration material. They told me to go to a bike shop.
Ironically, I was able to get a bicycle license and registration from the City of Santa Monica, cost $2.00. It is good throughout the state.
This is a good idea, though. We should try to find out where, if there a bicycle shops that do it, and what their hours are.

I know the LAPD on Venice near La Brea does it there....some do it on 1 saturday a month.....maybe we can get the forms ahead of time and have them all filled out before we do it.....

Yes, it's a lame idea, but I know you all mean well. Registration is an archaic law used only by asshole cops to harass group rides. Just write down your serial number and lock your bike well. That's all you can really do.

If it does happen on the first Saturday of the month, we should definitely do it.
The cops always find stolen bikes or arrest some guy for another crime who is riding a stolen bike, sometimes the registration sticker is pulled off, but the serial number is in their system. They run the serial number through their computer, and if nothing comes up, they auction the bikes.
If the serial number comes back with your name and phone number, since you registered the bike, they call you. You come down, show them id and take your bike home.

you're totally right, and while we're at it, how about we all stop voting. it's not my one vote counts right ?
not like i am voting, but thanks to you i'll try to encourage not voting and registering bikes.

Yeah, because registering your bike is an important social good, just like voting. Brilliant analogy, kid. You'll go far.

Something like. "I am a curmudgeon, I can't get laid, my dick is too small, I want to complain and diss everyone."

There's a lot of inherent hypocrisy to this.
We want the cops to leave us alone when we break traffic laws, vandalize private property, shoplift, and generally act disruptive.
But when OUR private property gets lifted, those motherfuckers better be working in shifts to get it back.
Fuck cops. We don't need them in our lives. Period.

+1 hatehills & pc.
The rest of you kind of sound like a bunch of little brats. Cops are only good when you 'need' them, other wise 'fuck the police', right? Lame.
I like the idea, in concept... in the sense of overwhelming the police stations for something they no longer can provide. Not for actually getting licenses.
All bikes have serial numbers now, write that shit down. THAT IS YOUR 'LICENSE'. When you get your bike stolen, you can report that number to the police. If they recover your bike, it will be returned to you. If you can count on such luxury. Usually you're just shit out of luck.

I believe the standard procedure is put this sticker on the bottom of the bottom bracket. Where the thief won't find it is my guess.
In regards to the riding two abreast. LB has it written in their Muni Code,
10.48.040 Riding in a group.
Persons operating bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast, except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles. (Prior code § 3410.203).
LB has the best cops and the friendliest streets in the world yet again!

Eddie, did you get your sticker in the city of LA? I'm trying to figure out if LA has their own sticker. If they use the State of California one, I guess I could get that one anywhere.
My city doesn't require bicycle registration so I'm not sure if the city of LA will require me to have their sticker if I ride in LA.

it doesnt matter if where you live requires you to register or not, you should do it anyway. so if theres ever another situation where the police are messing with someone and they try to get rid of the group by saying they are going to start giving out tickets for not having them you can flip your bike over and say "hey, officer fuckhead, heres my bike license."

I looked on the DMV site.... I see nothing... I can't even see a human powered bicycle registration form... and the one code I read said it's a city's decision, but isn't that still DMV shit for L.A. ? I don't know.... not saying I'm gonna reg. my bike anyway... just peaked my interest. ALSO... There's nothing on LACBC site or C.I.C.L.E..... all i know is, there were fucking commercials and Vegas style signs all over the road when the cell phone law went into effect... somebody could let a sista know when there is a new law that affects commuters of any sort... whatever.... i'll probably get hit by a car anyway. ;)

Info taken from another post:
Central Division on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-8pm. You need to bring in your ID, $3.00 and your bike receipt, if you have it. It's ok if you don't have your bike receipt, but you will fill out something giving the make and model, serial number, size of frame and tires and color of the bike. The address is: 251 E. 6th Street, LA 90014, LA and 6th. Phone is: 213-972-1298.
IMO we should all register our bikes, get lights, do all the things we're expected to do by law. If an officer desides to write you an unfair ticket you can fight it. Show the judge that you did your best to comply with all bicycling laws and that your intent was to conform to the laws. Judges actually listen to what you have to say unlike many officers.

Pacific Div. (officer Reyes) said they don't either. I mentioned 26.01 municipal code and a friend receiving a citation....she handed it off to the Juvenille division....
if you have a few minutes, call one of the numbers on the link here and ask when and where they issue bike licenses.....if they wanna fuck with us, let's fuck em right back.
