It's not run by a religion, but half of the steps (2,3,5,6,7,11) involve
god in some way.
It's pretty guilt/shame motivated.
Addiction sucks, but there's got to be a better way to deal with it.
Step 1 - We admitted we were powerless over our addiction - that our lives had become unmanageable
Step 2 - Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity
Step 3 - Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood God
Step 4 - Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves
Step 5 - Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs
Step 6 - Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character
Step 7 - Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings
Step 8 - Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all
Step 9 - Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others
Step 10 - Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it
Step 11 - Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of God's will for us and the power to carry that out
Step 12 - Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs

I see a group on Wednesdays at 8pm in South Pasadena as I drive by.. mostly men outside smoking and they look like a cool, eclectic group of people.
Here's the link: http://www.simeetings.com/LA/SouthPasadenaMtgs.html just scroll down to Wednesday for the address.
Looks like there are quite a few in Pasadena including Noon meetings in Victory Park: http://www.simeetings.com/LA/PasadenaMtgs.html
Good luck. I've watched many friends go through the process and it certainly isn't easy.

hey guys thanks for the input.ihave been goin to that south pasadena one and its probably the best ive gone to.the whole god thing does kind of irk me but ive just ignored that for right now and tried to listen to all the fucked up shit others have gone through.thats been pretty he;pful.
i dont know what that patch is about but its cool.i came up with the one man army thing because it seems like quitting drinking is a lonely battle.that sounds lame .oh well ,keep on riding

Yes.. the god thing can be difficult. One of my friends decided that since we are supposedly created in gods image and thus are all god... that the "higher power" was his future self.. the one that wanted him to get his life together so the better times could begin.... if that helps you any.
I'm really close to the SP meeting. There's a Starbucks at the corner of Huntington if you ever want to sit with someone and not drink let me know. email me at furbrats-mail at yahoo dot com.

Hey man,
I had to get a handle on my drinking/using too...I do group rides that are arduous or fast as fuck. The rush and feeling of exhaustion and accomplishment has done more for me then AA ever did. I have begun to celebrate my health and love my body in a way I never did before I started riding. I would be happy to go ride sometime, or just introduce myself so you know not everyone's wasted. Feel free to ring me <323 eight 9 nine eight eight 98> James
