Is this safe? The kid is tiny and in a small basket on the front handlebars. taken at wilshire and westwood....one of the busiest intersections in the country.

we sell them at my work.
They're called the ibert. Very cool little inventions.
SAFER than behind you!! Their hands can hold your bars, your arms protect them from the sides, and on top of that, they finally don't have to stare at your back!
I give it 2 thumbs up.
But 1 thumb down to the parent riding on busy streets.

I actually liked that setup when my kids were infants. Especially when they were too small to put in a bikeseat on top of the rear rack. Placing them in front is a lot more stable since the weight is better distributed between the wheels. I never felt comfortable about putting them in the rear, the supports on the rear rack weren't that strong and it really messed up the center of gravity on the bike.
I even liked the idea that I had a chance of protecting my child if they sat in front of me. Unless you can afford to drop a few thousand for a bakfiet, I don't see a lot of other choices other than just driving the child around in a car.
By the way, the kid is not on a handlebar, they sit behind the handlebar above the top tube.

I just don't think a child seat on a bike is a good idea.

I guess the solution for the parent of a small child is to put them in a car seat in the back seat of your car and drive them.

That would be the bakfiet -- Josef (Flying Pigeons in Highland Park) has one but they cost a few thousand -- a litte more than I can afford. So if child seats on bikes is not a good thing, then a car seat in the back of the car seems to be the way to go for parents.
